1 High School Students Taking Community College Courses School Year Report To comply with Section of the Illinois School Code, as well as Sections or 34-8, high school and unit districts superintendents are required to complete and submit to the Illinois State Board of Education an annual survey that documents the number of high school students taking community college courses and the names of the courses taken. For school year , 393 high school and unit districts completed and submitted the High School Students Taking Community College Courses survey from April through September Among these reporting districts, 36 districts reported that no students took community college courses and the remaining 357 districts reported that 39,291 students took a total of 1,948 courses offered by the community colleges. Of the 620,400 high school students included in the fall enrollment counts, approximately 6.3 percent took courses offered by the community colleges. Of the 504 public districts enrolled high school students, 71 percent of these districts reported their students took community college courses. Appendix A provides data on the number of students, by gender and race/ethnicity, in each of the districts where students enrolled in community college courses. High school and unit districts reported a total of 47 Illinois community colleges that offered courses to their students in grades 9 through 12. The number of high school students who took courses from each of these community colleges ranges from 17 students at the Harry S. Truman City College in Chicago to 6,201 students at the Joliet Junior College in Joliet. Among the 47 community colleges, approximately 45 percent (21 colleges) offered courses to more than 500 high school students. Five community colleges, including four of the seven Chicago city colleges, and Triton College in River Grove, offered courses to fewer than 100 high school students during school year Appendix B lists these community colleges, along with the number of enrolled high school students by gender and race/ethnicity. There were 28 community college courses taken by 39,291 high school students, with many of the students taking more than one course. Therefore, districts recorded 57,686 course enrollment counts for the 28 courses. The number of students taking each of these courses ranges from 18 students taking the library science course to 9,399 students taking the English language and literature course. Approximately 75 percent (21 courses) of the 28 courses served more than 500 high school students each; three courses were taken by fewer than 70 students. These three courses are library science, conservation and renewable natural resources, and ethnic cultural studies. Appendix C lists the course names and the number of enrolled high school students, by gender and race/ethnicity. For further information regarding high school students taking community college courses, please contact Ms. Niann Chern in the ISBE Data Analysis and Accountability Division at 217/ or nchern@isbe.net.
