How Quantum Computing Will August 2017 At Omnicom Health Group, we believe that current technologies such as biometric sensors have the ability to revolutionize patient care and diagnosis when they re combined with the revolutionary problem-solving tools called quantum computing. We would like to know what you think Today s Biometric Uses IoT and Biometric Tracking What is Quantum Computing? Future Applications of Quantum Computing Send us your feedback at technology@omnicomhealthgroup.com. 1
Exponential Biometrics: How Quantum Computing Will 1 Today s Biometric Uses Monitoring patient vital signs in the hospital with biometric devices such as heart rate monitors and blood oxygen sensors has largely impacted patient care by allowing doctors to make quick and educated decisions. In recent years, we have seen these devices leave the hospital setting and become a part of everyday life in the form of wearable devices. With wearable devices, consumers can record data with devices such as the Apple Watch or Fitbit fitness trackers and track their vitals in real time. The processing abilities associated with quantum computing make biometrics even more useful in and out of the hospital setting as well within the pharmaceutical industry. Quantum computing is a revolutionary, new, and rapid problem-solving tool that works in a completely different way than typical computers. 2
Exponential Biometrics: How Quantum Computing Will 2 IoT and Biometric Tracking There is a boom of Internet of Things (IoT)-integrated biometric devices coming to market. Within the hospital setting, efficiency and efficacy of patient care have been drastically improved with the introduction of IoT to biosensors. Philips created e-alert, a tool that brings signs of device malfunction to the attention of hospital employees. This prevents catastrophic failure of the device as well as inaccurate measurements, which leads to saving time, money, and lives. In the consumer market, Rotex has created a temporary tattoo that has an electronic chip embedded in it to detect ECG, respiration, hydration, temperature, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, and even muscle fatigue. The tattoo-chips also allow for gesture recognition, brain control, and muscle control. 3
3 What is Quantum Computing? With many of these biometric devices growing in popularity, massive amounts of usable data are accumulating. Even with all of this data available, the data sets are often obtained through multiple devices measuring different physiological processes. In most circumstances, the data sets from each of these monitors is siloed rather than analyzed together as one data set in order to provide deeper insights. The ability to combine and evaluate information from multiple biometric trackers would greatly enhance the usability of these devices in a professional healthcare setting. If this is what we must do in order to make additional use of the data, why hasn t someone done it yet? Currently, our limited computing power makes this sort of processing difficult, if not impossible. A faster, more powerful computer would be a better fit to handle the crossanalysis of the large amounts of data and determine an underlying diagnosis only by using all the data from all the data sets. Quantum computing is a likely solution to this problem. Conventional computers are radically different from the emerging quantum computers in that the rules of Newtonian physics don t apply. Currently a bit, which is used to encode information, is constrained to being either a 1 or a 0. A quantum bit (qubit) can be a 1, 0, or both at any given time, which unleashes incredible computing power on these large amounts of data. Quantum computing is so new that it is not commercially available, but IBM and Google are setting up a way to allow companies to purchase time on their quantum computers. IBM intends to make their 50-qubit system available in the coming years for commercial use while others say commercial use is 10 to 20 years away. Once quantum computing is perfected and available for the general public, we can apply it to as a solution to the aforementioned biometric problem to analyze the data in an incredibly efficient way. This will provide profound insights into healthcare and patient health. The biometric devices themselves may even be altered with the integration of quantum computing. 4
4 Future Applications of Quantum Computing Rather than merely analyzing the data differently from current biometrics, the seemingly limitless power of quantum computing gives it the opportunity to significantly shape healthcare in the future. Genetic information could be input into a quantum computer and personalized, and optimized treatment options for individual patients could be given to medical staff. D-Wave, a quantum computing company, has specified that this technology could be applied to radiotherapy and protein folding. D-Wave is considered to be at the forefront of cancer radiotherapy as it has completed an initial radiotherapy study in a research facility in New York. This provides a quicker and more accurate approach to cancer treatment, saving more lives as well as physician time. Further understanding protein structure is quite valuable in order to develop therapy treatments or cure diseases. Although we are able to easily figure out the amino acid order of a protein, it is much more difficult to find out how these amino acids fold and interact with each other to form a 3D structure. Quantum computing will be able to produce statistically probable protein tertiary folding patterns given the protein amino acid sequence, greatly assisting researchers in treating and curing patients with malfunctioning proteins. 5
Conclusion There is tangible and unquestionable value in biometric technologies for consumers in their everyday lives. Further promise is to come with the advancement of quantum computing, which will help identify concerns from underlying trends in the biometric data. Additionally, quantum computing optimizes current treatment options and treatment schedules while manipulating numerous desired variables. It can also assist in the development of new treatment options by understanding complex bioprocesses. If you would like to learn more, please contract us at 6
