1 Abstract Short news story is a wellknown journalistic genre Though it satisfies all the essential criteria of narrativity it differs from a news report A description of the structural properties of a short hard news story is attempted here Since thematic selection and thematic progression are considered to represent the rhetorical structure of a genre we focus our attention on these textual strategies both quantitatively and qualitatively Our analysis is based on the notion of sentence (topical theme but it also uses theme in a broader sense as discourse theme; the latter is necessary for the identification of a short news story as a genre Moreover the syntactic and semantic relations between the main text of a story and its title are considered Finally the textual profile of a short soft news story ( issue report is described briefly / 0 ( ( ( event story ( issue report ( / (White 997 ( (news reports
