1 Grade 7 English This is a literature based curriculum that focuses on the comprehension of a variety of texts within multiple genres. Students participate in whole group novels, smaller book groups and independent reading. In addition the three strands of composition, grammar, and oral presentation are addressed through a variety of writing projects. Structured grammar lessons provide reinforcement of the skills necessary to communicate effectively in writing. Grammar Identify antonyms and homophones Identify the four types of sentences Identify and fix run on and fragments Review parts of speech Review proper dialogue punctuation Identify and understand direct and indirect objects, subject/ verb agreement, and irregular verbs Identify and understand compound and complex sentence Identify and understand modifiers Use adjectives and adverbs effectively in writing In addition, previously taught grammatical concepts will be reviewed. Other concepts may become evident through student writing and will be addressed. There is a strong emphasis on the development of proportional relationships, understanding of rational numbers, algebraic thinking, and problem solving within all standards. Unit rates, equivalent rates, rates with like and unlike units Identify unit rates in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and word problems. 5 Grade 7 Geography Seventh graders systematically study the world outside of the United States and North America by addressing standards that emphasize political and physical geography and embed five major concepts: location, place, human interaction with the environment, movement, and regions. Students systematically learn geography around the world continent by continent, similar to the way in which atlases are organized. They also learn about each continent in an order that reflects, first, the early development of the river valley civilizations and then the later development of maritime civilizations in the Mediterranean area and in Northern and Western Europe. 8 Grade 7 Science 7 th graders study three units, Astronomy, Cell and Human Biology and Chemistry. Students use the practices of science: asking questions, developing and using models, planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, using mathematical tools, constructing explanations, engaging in argument from evidence and communicating information. Astronomy Objects in the night and daytime sky move in predictable ways and those motions are governed by gravity. Seasons, moon phases, and eclipses occur due the relative motion of the Earth, moon, and Sun. Scientists use both direct and indirect evidence to understand the properties of planets, stars, and other objects in our universe. Earth, Moon, Sun System o Describe the relative motion of the sun, moon, and earth. o Link the motion of the sun and earth to a day and year. o Model the relative position of the earth, moon, and sun to explain moon phases and eclipses. o Model the relative position of the earth and sun to explain seasons. Scale and Structure of the Universe o Interpret and construct scale models of the solar system and universe. o Use indirect evidence to construct a model of the universe. The Solar System o Compare and contrast the physical properties of objects in the solar system. o Relate the physical properties of the objects in the solar system to its formation. Stars and Galaxies o Explain the life cycle of stars. o Compare and contrast the physical and chemical properties of stars and planets. o Describe how scientists use indirect evidence to understand star and galaxy formation. Cell and Human Biology All living things are comprised of cells that carry out the functions necessary to sustain life. Cells are comprised of structures that underlie their functions. Matter and energy flow through cells and organisms. Tools both enhance and limit our understanding of organisms. Structure and Function of Cells o Distinguish between single celled and multi-cellular organisms. o Compare and contrast the function of the cell s major organelles.

9 o Use a microscope to view cells and other organisms. o Create models of a variety of cells and their organelles. o Link the structure a cell to its function. o Explain how the functions that take place at the cellular level contribute to the survival of the organism. o Describe how organisms acquire and release energy. Systems in Living Things Provide examples of the hierarchical organization of multicellular organisms. List the major systems of the human body. Apply the idea of hierarchical organization of multcellular organisms to the major systems of the human body. Describe the general functions of each of the major systems of the human body. Explain how each system in the human body works with other systems Chemistry Matter cannot be created or destroyed, but rather can be changed through physical and chemical processes. Matter can be studied at many levels with the smallest levels influencing the properties of matter at the larger levels. There are over 100 elements that combine in a many ways to form all living and nonliving things. Heat energy moves in predictable ways. Properties of Matter o Choose the appropriate tool to measure the volume and mass of both regular and irregular objects. o Calculate the density of both regular and irregular objects. o Use density to identify unknown substances. o Compare and contrast the relative position of particles in a solid, liquid, and gas. o Apply their understanding of a particulate model of matter to explain how mass is conserved in a closed system. Heat Energy o Describe the movement of heat energy when substances cool and are heated. o Differentiate between heat and the measurement of the motion of particles in a substance, i.e. temperature. o Compare and contrast heat movement due to conduction and convection. o Interpret cooling and heating curves and identify when phase changes are occurring.
