1 THE KOSZUL-TATE TYPE RESOLUTION FOR GERSTENHABER-BATALIN-VILKOVISKY ALGEBRAS JEEHOON PARK AND DONGGEON YHEE Abstract. J. Tate provided an explicit way to kill a nontrivial homology class of a commutative differential graded algebra over a commutative noetherian ring R in [9]. The goal of this article is to generalize his result to the case of GBV (Gerstenhaber-Batalin-Vilkovisky) algebras and, more generally, the descendant L -algebras. More precisely, for a given GBV algebra (A = m 0 A m, δ, l δ 2 ), we provide another explicit GBV algebra (Ã = m 0Ãm, δ, l δ 2 ) such that its total homology is the same as the degree zero part of the homology H 0 (A, δ) of the given GBV algebra (A, δ, l δ 2 ). Throughout this paper, R will be a commutative noetherian k-algebra where k is a field of characteristic zero. 1 Let M be an ideal of R. In [9], J. Tate proved that there exists an acyclic commutative differential graded algebra (so called CDGA) X over R, whose underlying graded algebra is free, such that its zeroth homology H 0 (X) = R/M by applying the explicit technique of killing nontrivial homology classes to the Koszul chain complex of R/M. In other words, there exists a free resolution of a given CDGA (R/M,0) (the graded algebra R/M equipped with the zero differential) in the category of commutative differential graded algebras over R. The goal of this paper is to generalize his technique of killing nontrivial homology classes, to the case when M is not an ideal of R but satisfies some more general condition; in particular, we generalize this to the case of GBV (Gerstenhaber-Batalin-Vilkovisky) algebras which plays an interesting role in mirror symmetry (e.g. see p. 212, [1]). The GBV algebra is a triple (A, δ, l 2 ) where a graded algebra A = m 0 A m equipped with a differential δ : A m A m 1 and a graded Lie bracket (1.1) l 2 (x, y) = l δ 2(x, y) := δ(x y) δx y ( 1) x x δy. See section 4.1, [3] for more details on GBV algebras. In the case of GBV algebras, our result can be formulated as the following theorem: Theorem 1.1. Let (A = m 0 A m, δ, l 2 ) be a GBV algebra. Then there is an explicit GBV algebra (Ã = m 0Ãm, δ, l 2 ) such that its total homology is the same as the degree zero part H 0 (A, δ) = A 0 / (δ(a 1 ) A 0 ) of the given GBV algebra (A, δ, l 2 ). In Theorem 1.1, the abstract existence of (Ã, δ, l 2 ) follows from the general theory of Koszul duality for the GBV operads (see [2] and [6], for instance). The homotopy transfer theorem equips H (A, δ) with a homotopy GBV algebra structure and the general Koszul duality will provide an existence of a homotopy GBV algebra whose total homology is isomorphic to H 0 (A, δ). The general theory allows us to rectify this homotopy GBV algebra to a quasi-isomorphic GBV algebra. But the point of Theorem 1.1 is to provide an explicit quasi-free resolution of a GBV algebra. In order to explain the condition for M in the more general case, we reformulate Tate s result using a Lie algebra representation. Since R is noetherian, the ideal M is generated by f 1,, f m R with m 1. Consider the abelian Lie algebra g M over k with dimension m. Denote its k-basis by e 1,, e m. Then Tate s theorem is tantamount to saying that one can kill all the homologies of the CDGA (E(g M ; ρ M ), δ ρ ) except for the zeroth homology and construct a free CDGA over R which is quasi-isomorphic to (H 0 (g M, R), 0). Now we explain how to generalize the Tate theorem by suitably weakening the condition that M is an ideal of R. We need two notions for our generalization; the order of a differential operator and the category C of chain complexes over k equipped with a super-commutative product. Let A be a unital Z-graded k-algebra and π End k (A). Let g be a finite dimensional Lie algebra over k and let ρ be a Lie algebra representation of g on a commutative noetherian k-algebra R. Assume that there exist an integer m such that ρ(g) is a differential operator of order m for each g g. If m is strictly bigger than 0, then Im (δ ρ ) R is not an ideal of R and (E(g M ; ρ M ), δ ρ ) is not a CDGA under the multiplication (1.4) because δ ρ is not a derivation. If the order of ρ(g) is 0 then (E(g M ; ρ M ), δ ρ ) is a CDGA and Im (δ ρ ) R corresponds to M in our terminology. We need to enlarge the category of (unital) CDGAs to the category C = C k of chain complexes over a field k equipped with a super-commutative product. An object of C is a unital Z-graded associative and super-commutative k-algebra A with differential δ, denoted (A, δ) such that δ(1 A ) = 0. A morphism in C k is a unit preserving chain map of degree zero (note that a morphism is not necessarily a ring homomorphism). If (A, δ) is an object of C, we let A m denote the k-submodule of A consisting of homogeneous elements of degree m, and write the Z-graded decomposition as A = m Z A m. We use a to denote the degree of a homogeneous element a A. The degree is additive ab = a + b, which implies that the product is a degree zero k-bilinear map. This category C can be thought of as a generalization of the category of CDGAs. Recall that (A, δ) is called a CDGA if and only if (A, δ) Ob(C) and δ is a derivation of the product, δ(ab) = δ(a)b + ( 1) a aδ(b), a, b A. Now we state the main theorem. Theorem 1.2. Let g be a finite dimensional Lie algebra over k and ρ be a Lie algebra representation of g on a commutative noetherian k-algebra R. Assume that ρ(g) is a differential operator of a fixed finite order µ for each g g and the total homology H(g, R) is finite dimensional over k. Then we explicitly construct an object (B ρ, δ ρ ) of the category C such that B ρ = m 0 Bρ m, the differential K ρ has order µ + 1, and the total homology of (B ρ, δ ρ ) is naturally isomorphic to the vector space H 0 (g, R) := R/(Im δ ρ R)

If µ = 0, i.e. M is an ideal of R, then Theorem 1.4 is again equivalent to the theorem of J. Tate Motivation and an idea of a proof. In [8], the authors found a GBV algebra for smooth projective hypersurfaces. This result was generalized to smooth projective complete intersections in [5]. They computed the total homology of the GBV algebra BV X = (A X = m 0 A X,m, δ X, l 2 ) of a smooth projective complete intersection X and proved that the zeroth part of its homology is naturally isomorphic to the primitive middle dimensional cohomology H prim (X, C) of X. Though the homology groups in other degrees are closely related to the lower degree singular cohomology of X, they do not match precisely. In the context of homological mirror symmetry for X, it would be nice to construct a formal Frobenius manifold structure on H prim (X, C) in an explicit manner. For such a purpose, it turns out that a key technical step is to construct another GBV algebra BV X whose total homology is isomorphic to H prim (X, C), which is our main motivation for the current article. We can apply Theorem 1.1 to BV X to obtain BV X. We also explain a motivation for a more general result (Theorem 1.2), which is why we consider the above generalization of the Koszul-Tate resolution in the context of the category C. This category C seems odd at first glance (since the two parts of the structure, the differential and the product, are not compatible), but it turns out that C provides a good framework to study period integrals of algebraic varieties. Our basic principle is that period integrals of any sort of interesting mathematical objects can be understood as a homotopy class of a morphism in C. The first two authors, in [8], analyzed the period integrals of a smooth projective hypersurface X using the framework of C, and consequently constructed a formal semi-frobenius manifold structure on the middle dimensional primitive cohomology of X. Furthermore they used the deformation functor attached to an L - algebra to make an extended formal deformation space of X and a formal flat connection on its tangent bundle which generalizes the Gauss-Manin connection. One of the important technical tools in [8] is the descendant functor Des from the category C to the category of L -algebras, which is also a main technical tool of the current article. The descendant functor measures the failures of compatibility between two mathematical structures. Then it is proven in [8] that l δ n is well-defined on S n (A), where S n (A) the n-th symmetric product of A, and (A, l δ ) is a shifted L - algebra in the sense of Definition (2.1). Note that l δ 2 measures the failure of δ being a derivation of the product. This implies that (A, δ = l δ 1) is a CDGA if and only if l δ 2 = l δ 3 = = 0. In fact, the notion of the descendant functor is intimately related to homotopy probability theory, as developed in [4]. We will briefly review the definition of the shifted L -algebra and the descendant L -algebra in subsection 2.1. If one tries to extend the results of [8] to a more general class of algebraic varieties (e.g. projective or toric complete intersections), then it seems technically important to find a resolution of the zeroth homology of a certain Lie algebra representation inside the category C. This leads us to consider the problem of generalizing the Koszul-Tate resolution inside the category of CDGAs to the situation of chain complexes with a binary product (i.e. a resolution inside the category C). The main idea to prove Theorem 1.2 (and Theorem 1.1) is to use an explicit description of the descendant L -algebra (A, l δ ) associated to (A, δ). We summarize a correspondence between Tate s situation and our situation in terms of a Lie algebra representation ρ : g End k (R) and (A, δ) = (E(g; ρ), δ ρ ) in Table 1. We briefly explain the contents of each section. In subsection 2.1, we explain why Tate s method fails in our generalized setting and indicate how to remedy the situation. In subsection 2.2, we briefly review the descendant L -algebras which are important technical tools for our construction. Section 3 is the main section. In subsection 3.1, we briefly explain an outline of the proof. In subsection 3.2, we prove the main theorem in the special case of GBV (Gerstenhaber-Batalin-Vilkovisky)

6 6 JEEHOON PARK AND DONGGEON YHEE algebras (i.e. Theorem 1.1, or equivalently, µ = 1 in Theorem 1.2). In subsection 3.3, we deal with the general case and finish the proof. In Section 4, we apply the main theorem to a GBV algebra associated to a smooth projective complete intersection X to obtain a GBV algebra whose total homology is naturally isomorphic to the middledimensional primitive cohomology of X. 2. Descendant functor 2.1. Why does Tate s method fail in the generalized situation? In this subsection we explain why the Koszul-Tate type resolution fails by using a simple example, when (A, δ) is not a CDGA and indicate how to salvage the situation. For simplicity, assume that (A, δ) has a GBV(Gerstenhaber- Batalin-Vilkovisky) algebra structure and has homology only inn degree 0 and 1. We further assume that H 1 (A, δ) k and let r be a homology representative of a nonzero class in H 1 (A, δ). Tate s method suggests to adjoin a formal variable θ to A to consider A[θ] and deform the differential δ by δ + r θ. He proved that (A[θ], δ + θ ) is a resolution of (A, δ), if (A, δ) is a CDGA. But if (A, δ) is not a CDGA, then a serious problem occurs; namely, δ + r θ is not a differential. Let θn b A[θ]. Our idea relies on the notion of descendant L -algebras, which we review in the next subsection Descendant L -algebra. We briefly recall from [8] the formalism of the descendant functor, which is the main technical tool we use to construct resolutions. In order to fix our convention on L - algebras, we set up notations for partitions. In [8], the authors proved that (A, 1 A, l δ ) is a unital L -algebra (see Definition (2.1)), which we call a descendant L -algebra. One can easily check from the inductive definition that if l δ m = 0 then l δ m+1 = l δ m+2 = = 0. For a given morphism f : (A, δ) (A, δ ) in C k, the authors of [8] defined an L -morphism Des(f), that is, family φ f = φ f 1, φf 2,, of linear maps φf n : S n (A) A of degree 0, and proved that the assignment Des is a functor from C k to the category of unital L -algebras. We call this functor Des a descendant functor. 3. The main results 3.1. Outline of the proof. When there is a non-trivial homology class r, the main idea of the proof is killing a homology class r by employing a new formal variable θ so that δ(θ) = r, as Tate did in [9]. However, our case is very different from [9]. In [9], δ is a derivation so that δ(θ n ) = nθ n 1 δ(θ) and δ(θ v) = θδ(v) ± δ(θ)v up to sign. Then one can easily prove that if the new formal variable θ does not generate a non-trivial homology class, then neither do the elements like δ(θ n ) and δ(θ v). But, in our case, we need to add additional new formal variables to kill δ(θ n ) and δ(θ v), since δ in this paper is not a derivation. Our main tool of the proof is to use the descendant L -structure. The construction of adding variables has to be coherent to the descendant L -structure of (A, l δ ). In order to kill r, we need to add infinitely many new variables to A inductively on the degree of the homology classes so that the extended algebra à is explicitly computable and remains to be a descendant L -algebra. More precisely, for a given generating (as a k-algebra) set S of A, we extend S inductively to S U 0, S U 0 U 1, and so on, where U n is a finite set of formal variables, and define à to be the k-algebra (modulo the obvious super-commutative relation) generated by S U 1 U 2 (see A θ in (3.2) in the GBV case and (3.8) in the general case for precise definitions). Then we construct a differential δ on à using the descendant L -relation (see (3.4) in the GBV case and (3.10) in the general case for details) and show that δ 2 = 0 and the non-trivial homology class r we wanted to kill only vanishes. Note that à is always an infinitely generated k-algebra, even if we start from a finitely generated k-algebra A and like to kill only one nontrivial homology class (in positive degree) of A The case of GBV algebras. Let (A, δ) be an object of the category C such that A is nonnegatively graded i.e. A = m 0 A m. We assume that A is a finitely generated Z-graded k-algebra whose generators are 1, q 1,, q N and that the chain complex (A, δ) is a GBV (Gerstenhaber-Batalin- Vilkovisky) algebra containing a non-trivial homology class r of degree 1. Note that (A, δ, l δ 2) is a GBV algebra if and only if the L -descendants satisfy l δ 3 = l δ 4 = = 0. The goal is to kill the nontrivial homology class r in the category of GBV algebras. Before killing a nontrivial (co)homology class r, Tate assumed that r was a skew non-zerodivisor in his (co)homology algebra. In this paper, such an assumption is not needed for two reasons. 1. H(A, δ) does not inherit an algebra structure from A : for a, b ker δ, l δ 2(a, b) = δ(ab) δ(a)b ± aδ(b) 0 and ab ker δ in general. This is why we treat H(A, δ) and H(A θ, δ θ ) as vector spaces. 2. In [9], the assumption is required to show that new variables do not generate new (co)cycles. In this paper, this annihilation property follows from the failure of Leibniz s rule. An object (A, δ) Ob(C) is called a homotopy enhancement of H k (V, k), if H(A, δ) is concentrated in degree 0 and is isomorphic to H k (V, k). Moreover, if (A, δ, l δ 2) is a GBV algebra, then we call (A, δ) a BV homotopy enhancement. Note that the binary product is responsible for the word enhancement. Such a homotopy enhancement plays an important role in analyzing the period matrices of deformations of a projective algebraic variety. In [8], the authors found a homotopy enhancement of the primitive middle-dimensional cohomology H n 1 prim (V, k), when V is a smooth projective hypersurface in P n. This result was generalized to smooth projective complete intersections in [5]. The main application of the current article is the following. Corollary 4.2. Let X be a smooth projective complete intersection of dimension m. Then there is a BV homotopy enhancement of the primitive middle-dimensional cohomology Hprim m (X, k) of X. Our method to achieve such a resolution of Hprim m (X, k) can be summarized as follows: Attach to X a certain Lie algebra representation ρ X originating from quantum mechanics.
