A THEOREM FOR DISTINCT ZEROS OF L-FUNCTIONS École Normale Supérieure arxiv: v [math.nt] 3 Apr Cachan November 9, 7 Abtract In thi paper, we etablih a imple criterion for two L-function L and L atifying a functional equation and ome natural aumption) to have infinitely many ditinct zero. Some related quetion have already been anwered in the particular cae of Automorphic form uing o-called Convere Theorem ee [4]). Deeper reult can alo be tated for element of the Selberg cla ee []). However, we hall give here a general anwer that do not ue any advanced topic in analytic number theory. Therefore, thi paper hould be acceible to anyone who ha ome baic notion in meaure-theory and advanced complex analyi. Throughout thi paper, we ditinguih two kind of Dirichlet erie, a it i uually done. A meromorphic function f on a domain Ω C i repreented by a General Dirichlet Serie GDS) if f can be written in the form f) = a n e λn a n ) i a equence of complex number and λ n ) i a equence of real and nonnegative number trictly increaing to infinity) when Re) i large enough. In the ame framework, f i repreented by an Ordinary Dirichlet Serie ODS) if f can be written in the form a n f) = n when Re) i large enough. In the event that the GDS i abolutely convergent when Re) i large), we hall ay that thi i an abolutely convergent GDS. In thi cae, we note σ a f) the abcia of abolute convergence of the erie thi number depend only on f and not on the form of the Dirichlet erie a we will ee, Corollary 3). We recall that for ODS, the finite abcia of convergence i equivalent to the finite abcia of abolute convergence via the inequality σ c f) σ a f) σ c f) + where σ c f) i the abcia of convergence of the ODS). The purpoe of thi paper i to provide a relationhip between two Dirichlet erie which may be extended to a meromorphic function of finite growth on the whole complex plane, atifying a functional equation and whoe et of zero counted with multiplicity) differ from one another only by a finite number of element. More precily, we hall prove quentin.gazda@en-cachan.fr
Theorem. Let γ be a meromorphic function on C, k a real. Suppoe that L and L are two meromorphic function on C uch that L i for i = and ) atifie the following condition i) There exit a meromorphic function L i on C and a poitive real N i uch that L i k ) = N i γ)l i ) C), ii) there exit a polynomial P i uch that P i L i i holomorphic and of finite order in C. Aume further that L /L ha only finitely many pole and that L /L and L /L are repreented by ODS. Then there exit an integer N and complex number a d ) d N uch that L ) = u N a u L ) C) The proof will infer that N = N /N when N /N i actually a poitive integer. The latter reult can be een a a generalization of a famou reult of Hamburger ee [3]). It ha the following well-known corollarie we left the proof for the reader) Corollary. Let χ and ϕ be two ditinct primitive Dirichlet character. Lχ, )/Lϕ, ) ha infinitely many pole. Then Corollary. Let f and g be two linearly independent Hecke form of integer weight k for Γ N). Then Lf, )/Lg, ) ha infinitely many pole. I FUNCTIONS REPRESENTED BY GDS We recall that for a meaure µ on the meaurable pace [, ), B[, )) a uual, B[, ) denote the Borel et of the topological pace [, )), the Laplace tranform Lµ of µ i defined by : Lµ) := e t µdt). When the image meaure µ ha finite ma, µ will be refered to a abolutely convergent : in thi cae, the Laplace tranform of µ converge for Re). The Laplace tranform will be ueful for u through the following example : let ν be the meaure on [, ), B[, )) defined by ν = a n δ λn. It i traightforward to ee that the correponding GDS i the Laplace tranform of ν remark that the meaure i abolutely convergent if and only if σ a Lν) i nonpoitive). Therefore, via a uniquene theorem for Laplace tranform, we hould be able to derive an equivalent reult for GDS. Theorem. Let µ and µ be two abolutely convergent meaure on [, ), B[, )) uch that Lµ ) = Lµ ) for all. Then µ = µ. Note that the aumption : Lµ ) = Lµ ) for all can be weaken in : Lµ ) = Lµ ) for all σ for a σ R), if we aume that the meaure t e σt )µ i i abolutlely convergent for i = and ).
Setting µ := µ µ alo abolutely convergent), the aumption i equiv- Proof : alent to e t µdt) = ). By the Stone-Weiertra theorem, for any continou function f on [, ], we can find a equence P n ) of polynomial uch that Hence, f P n := up t [,] ft) P n t) n. fe t )µdt) = fe t ) P n e t )µdt) µ [, )) f P n and ince the right-hand ide i arbitrary mall for large value of n), we conclude that fe t )µdt) = for any continou function f on [, ]. Therefore, we fix a < b in, ) and we define f ε for ε > ) by ε x e a + ε) e a ε x e a e a x e b f ε x) := ε x e b ε) e b x e b + ε otherwie. If ε i mall enough, f ε i continou and defined on [, ]. Thu, µ[a, b]) = [a,b] t)µdt) f ε e t )µdt) + µ [, ))ε = µ [, ))ε and finally µ[a, b]) = for all b > a the cae a = can be done imilary). To conclude, we define C := {[a, b] a, b [, )} B[, ). C i a π-ytem uch that σc) = B[, ) and on which µ and the trivial meaure coincide. Finally, knowing that µ[, )) =, a well-known reult from meaure-theory allow u to conclude that µ i the trivial meaure. Therefore µ = µ. Thi theorem ha many conequence in the theory of GDS. It ay in particular that a very few function are repreented by an abolutely convergent GDS. Corollary 3 Uniquene Theorem for GDS). Let f : [a, ) C for a certain a <. Then f can be repreented by at mot one abolutely convergent GDS. Proof : Suppoe that we can write for large enough) f) = a n e λn = b n e µn where the two erie are abolutely converging for a certain σ R. Without lo of generality, we may and hall aume that σ = taking a n := a n e σλn and b n := b n e σµn ). We introduce ν = a n δ λn, ν = b n δ µn. Thoe two meaure are abolutely convergent ince σ = ) and Lν ) = Lν ) for all. The previou theorem implie that ν = ν. Therefore, by meauring the ingleton {λ n }), {µ n }) under thi equality, one obtain that the two erie are the ame. 3
Corollary 4. A non-contant rational fraction i not repreented by an abolutely convergent GDS. Proof : We aume the oppoite, i.e. there exit F a non-contant rational function repreented by an abolutely convergent GDS. For σ a F), F) = a n n a b m m b = a n e λn. From the partial fraction principle, we know that we can write F a F) = a n n a b m m b = P ) + F ) + F ) F p ) where P i a polynomial and where for i {,..., p}), F i ) = c,i z i + c,i z i ) c n i,i z i ) ni for complex number z i ), c i,j ) and poitive integer n i ). Now, by the abolute convergence of the GDS, lim F) i finite, we denote it l. P mut be contant equal to l ince F i for i {,..., p}) tend to zero at infinity. Let f i for i {,..., p}) be the function n i t r e zit f i t) := c r,i r )! r= whoe Laplace tranform i F i ) and let λ be the Lebegue meaure on R. In the ame framework, Theorem implie that the two meaure lδ + p f i λ i= and a n δ λn are the ame. We eaily ee that f i for i {,..., p}) mut be zero. A contraction ince F i non-contant. II THE SPACE O N For convenience, we introduce a definition : a meromorphic function f i of finite order in a et Ω C if a ρ > exit uch that f) e ρ in Ω. It extend the uual definition of the finite order for entire function taking Ω = C). Definition. For N a poitive real, let O N rep. G N ) be the pace of function f that atify :. f i meromorphic on C and repreented by an ODS rep. abolutely convergent GDS),. C, f ) = N g) where g i repreented by an ODS rep. abolutely convergent GDS), 3. M > exit uch that f i of finite order in the et Ω M f) := { σ a g) Re) σ a f) + } { Im) M}. It i clear that if f belong to G N rep. O N ) then g belong to G N rep. O N ). The goal of thi ection i to undertand the tructure of O N. Lemma. f belong to G if and only if f i contant. In particular G = O = Vect {}. 4
Proof : We plit the complex plane into the following et Ω := Ω M f) Ω := {Re) σ a f) + } Ω 3 := {Re) σ a g)} Ω 4 := { σ a g) Re) σ a f) + } { Im) M}. By the fact that f ) = g) and the general theory of Dirichlet erie, we know that f i bounded on Ω and Ω 3. In particular, f i bounded on the line {Re) = σ a f) + } and {Re) = σ a g)}. We can apply the Phragmèn-Lindelöf principle to Ω to conclude that f i bounded on thi et. Thu, ince Ω Ω Ω 3 Ω 4 = C, the only pole of f are in Ω 4 which i bounded. By the iolated zero principle, f ha only finitely many pole. Let ρ, ρ,..., ρ m be thoe pole counted with multiplicity. To um up, we can find A and B two poitive contant uch that m ρ i )f) A + B m C). i= The general form of Liouville theorem then implie that the left hand ide i a polynomial in. Hence, f i a rational fraction in. By Corollary 4, f mut be contant. Lemma. If N > i not an integer, O N = {}. Proof : Clearly, the contant function equal to zero belong to O N. We now etablih the revere incluion. We take f O N and write N = N the entire part of N. We define N f : N / a u f) = a N +n e log N) log N +n)). u= An eay computation and the above formula how that f belong to G and a a conequence i contant by Lemma. Since log N +) > log N) becaue N > ) and the abolute convergence of the erie for Re) large), f) tend to zero a tend to infinity : thi contant mut be zero. It give f) = N u= a u Since N f ) = g) C), we have N for Re) large). u ) g) = a u for Re) large) N u= and thu everywhere on C by analytic continuation. But, by aumption, g i repreented by an ODS. From Corollary 3, ince the right-hand ide i abolutely convergent a a finite um), we obtain that thi right-hand ide mut be an ODS. A contradiction ince N i not an integer. The complete tructure of O N i given by the following theorem : Theorem 3. For all N >, the pace O N i a finite-dimenional C-vector pace and when N i an integer, { O N = Vect u N }. In particular, dimo N ) = dn) where dn) denote the number of poitive divior of N if N i an integer and otherwie). 5
Proof : Without lo of generality, we aume that N i an integer the other cae i given by the previou lemma). It follow directly from the definition that O N i a C-vector pace. Since = ) N N, for u a poitive divior of N, we have O N and thu, Similary, we alo have Vect u N { } O N G N Vect u {,...,N} { } G N We turn on to the other incluion. Let f) = n a nn O N G N and f be the function defined a ) N f : N f) / a u = N / a u u= n>n which i in G N thank to the vector-pace tructure. By contruction, f admit a GDS of the form f) = b n e µn = a N+n e log N) logn+n)) where µ n ) i a trictly increaing equence of poitive number a in the proof of the previou lemma). Conequently, f) lie in G. By Lemma, f i contant on C : thi contant mut be zero by contruction, ince f ha no contant term. We have : N a u f) = Finally f mut belong to O N, o we hould add the condition u N in the index of the um thi can be een by invoking Corollary 3, again). Thu Vect u N { } O N which prove the reult. It remain to prove a lemma. u= III PROOF OF THEOREM Lemma 3. Let f and g be two entire function of finite order uch that f/g i entire. Then f/g i of finite order. Proof : Since f and g are of finite order, they both have finite genu ee [] for a general tudy of the order, the genu and Hadamard factorization theorem). Thu, they both admit a Hadamard product : f) = n e P ) ) ) exp ρ ρ + h ρ hρ h g) = m e Q) ρ Zf) ρ Zg) ) ) exp ρ ρ + r ρ rρ r 6
where we ue the notation Zf) for the multiet of zero of f. Here, P and Q are two polynomial, and h rep. r) i the genu of f rep. g). By aumption Zg) Zf) where the incluion for multiet mean that all element of Zg) are in Zf) with a lower multiplicity). Conequently, the ratio of the two product over zero of f and g can be implified in exp h i=r+ if h r, and in r exp i=h+ i i i i ρ i ρ Zg) ρ i ρ Zg) ρ Zf)\Zg) ρ Zf)\Zg) ) ) exp ρ ρ + h ρ hρ h ) ) exp ρ ρ + h ρ hρ h if r h. From the definition of the genu, the following two erie ρ Zg) ρ i ρ Zf) are abolutly convergent for i {r,..., h}. Hence, in thoe two cae, the right-hand ide i entire and of finite order and thi complete the proof. We hall now reveal the proof of the main reult. ρ i Proof of Theorem : We uppoe that L k ) = N γ)l ) C), L k ) = N γ)l ) C) and we define ρ) := L ) + k ) L + k and ρ ) := We will how that ρ belong to O N/N. N N ) k/ ) L + k ). L + k. ρ i a meromorphic function on C a the quotient of two meromorphic function) repreented by an abolutely convergent ODS.. C, ρ ) = N /N ) ρ ) where ρ i alo repreented by an abolutely convergent ODS. 3. We introduce f ) := P L ) + k/) rep. f ) := P L ) + k/)). By aumption, f /f ha finitely many pole : let Z be the finite multiet of thoe pole. From Lemma 3 with f) = f ) and g) = f )/ ρ Z ρ)), we know that ρ) f ) f ) ρ Z i entire and of finite order in C. Thu, ρ i the product of a rational fraction and an entire function ince ) P + k/) ρ) = P + k/) ρ) f ). ρ Z ρ) f ) Taking M to be trictly larger than all the imaginary part of the pole of the rational fraction, we obtain the third condition that define O N/N. ρ Z 7
Hence ρ O N/N. If N /N i not an integer, ρ i the contant function equal to zero and the reult i clear. If N := N /N i an integer, there exit complex number a d ) uch that ρ) = a u C) u N by Theorem 3) and thi i the reult. Note that the proof infer N = N /N. Reference [] A. Perelli E. Bombieri.
