ABSORBING ANGLES, STEINER MINIMAL TREES, AND ANTIPODALITY HORST MARTINI, KONRAD J. SWANEPOEL, AND P. OLOFF DE WET arxiv: v [math.mg] 25 Aug 20 Abtract. We give a new proof that a tar {op i : i =,..., k} in a normed plane i a Steiner minimal tree of it vertice {o, p,..., p k } if and only if all angle formed by the edge at o are aborbing [Swanepoel, Network 36 (2000), 04 3]. The proof i more conceptual and impler than the original one. We alo find a new ufficient condition for higher-dimenional normed pace to hare thi characterization. In particular, a tar {op i : i =,..., k} in any CL-pace i a Steiner minimal tree of it vertice {o, p,..., p k } if and only if all angle are aborbing, which in turn hold if and only if all ditance between the normalization mixed l and l um of finitely many copie of R. p i pi equal 2. CL-pace include the Keyword: Steiner minimal tree, aborbing angle, antipodality, face antipodality, Minkowki geometry.. Introduction.. Minkowki geometry. Let M d denote a d-dimenional normed pace (or Minkowki pace) with origin o, i.e., R d equipped with a norm. We call an M 2 a Minkowki plane. Denote the unit ball by B = {x R d : x }. The dual M d of M d i R d equipped with the dual norm x := max x, y, y where, denote the inner product on R d. The dual unit ball B = {x R d : x, y y B} i alo known a the polar body of B. For example, the d-dimenional Minkowki pace l d and ld are dual of each other, where l d ha the norm (x,..., x d ) := d i= x i and l d ha the norm (x,..., x d ) := max{ x i : i =,..., d}. A vector x M d i dual to x M d, x o, if x = and x, x = x, i.e., x i a dual unit vector that attain it norm at x. In thi cae the hyperplane {x R d : x, x = } upport the unit ball at x x. Any hyperplane upporting the unit ball at x x i given in thi way by ome x dual to x. A unit vector v M d i a regular direction if there i only one hyperplane that upport B at v. Note that the norm function f(x) := x i differentiable at p o if and only if p p i a regular direction, and then the gradient f(p) i the unique vector in M d dual to p. The expoed face of the unit ball B defined by a unit vector a M d i [a ] := {a B : a, a = }. Similarly, a unit vector a M d define an expoed face [a] of B. If B i a polytope then all face are expoed, and each face F of B correpond to a face F of B a follow: F := {a B : a, a = for all a F }. Reearch upported by a grant from an agreement between the Deutche Forchunggemeinchaft in Germany and the National Reearch Foundation in South Africa.
ABSORBING ANGLES, STEINER MINIMAL TREES, AND ANTIPODALITY 2.2. Tree. Let S M d be a finite, non-empty et of point. A panning tree T of S i an acyclic connected graph with vertex et S. Denote it edge et by E(T ). A Steiner tree T of S i a panning tree of ome finite V M d uch that S V and uch that the degree of each vertex in V \ S i at leat 3. The vertice in S are the terminal of the Steiner tree T, and the vertice in V \ S the Steiner point of T. The length of a tree T in M d i l(t ) := x y. xy E(T ) A Steiner minimal tree (SMT) of S i a Steiner tree of S of mallet length. The requirement that Steiner point have degree at leat 3 i for technical convenience, ince Steiner point of degree at mot 2 can eaily be eliminated uing the triangle inequality without making the tree longer. It i eaily een that the number of Steiner point i at mot #S 2. It then follow by a imple compactne argument that any non-empty finite S ha a SMT. A tar with center i a tree in which the vertex i joined to all other vertice. If S ha neighbor,..., k V in ome SMT, then clearly the tar joining to each i, i =,..., k, i a SMT of {,,..., k }. Thu, to characterize the neighborhood of terminal in SMT, it i ufficient to characterize SMT which are tar with the center a terminal. Thi i the intent of Theorem below..3. Angle. An angle x x 0 x 2 in M d i aborbing if the function x x x 0 + x x + x x 2 attain it minimum at x 0. Thu x x 0 x 2 i aborbing if and only if the tar {x 0 x, x 0 x 2 } i a SMT of {x 0, x, x 2 }. Lemma. Let a and b be unit vector in M d. Then the following are equivalent: () (2) (3) aob i aborbing. There exit unit vector a and b in M d uch that a, a = b, b = and a + b. The expoed face [a] and [ b] = [b] of the dual unit ball are at ditance. Proof. () (2) i part of Lemma 5.4 in [5]. (2) (3) i trivial. In particular, thi i a property of the angle alone: Corollary. If y i i a point on the ray x o x i, i =, 2, then {x 0 x, x 0 x 2 } i a SMT of {x 0, x, x 2 } if and only if {x 0 y, x 0 y 2 } i a SMT of {x 0, y, y 2 }. [5, Propoition 3.3]. Furthermore, an angle containing an aborbing angle i itelf aborbing. See alo Propoition 3.3 and Lemma 5.4 of [5]..4. The planar cae. We are now able to formulate the firt reult. In any Minkowki pace, all angle made by two incident edge of a SMT are clearly aborbing. (For angle in a minimal panning tree even more i true [4].) Remarkably, a hown in [8], for a Minkowki plane the condition that all angle are aborbing i alo ufficient for a tar to be a SMT of it vertice. Theorem. Let p,..., p k o be point in a Minkowki plane M 2. Then the tar joining each p i to o i a SMT of {o, p,..., p k } if (and only if) all angle p i op j, i j, are aborbing. Thi reult i ued in [8] to how that the maximum degree of a vertex in a SMT in a Minkowki plane i 6, with equality only if the unit ball i an affine regular hexagon; for all other plane the maximum i 4 if there exit upplementary aborbing angle, and 3 otherwie. The proof given in [8] employ a long cae analyi. The new proof preented in Section 2 i more conceptual.
ABSORBING ANGLES, STEINER MINIMAL TREES, AND ANTIPODALITY 3.5. Antipodality and higher dimenion. Theorem doe not hold anymore in Minkowki pace of dimenion at leat 3. For example, let the unit ball be the projection of a (d+)-cube along a diagonal. (When d = 3, thi i the rhombic dodecahedron.) In thi Minkowki pace, the tar joining o to all 2 d+ 2 vertice of the unit ball i not a SMT of thee vertice if d 3, depite all the angle being aborbing [9]. However, Theorem extend to both l d and ld. Our econd reult i a generalization of thi fact. We firt introduce ome more notion, involving antipodality. Two boundary point of the unit ball B are antipodal if there exit ditinct parallel hyperplane upporting the two point. Equivalently, unit vector a and b are antipodal if and only if a b = 2. Lemma 2. If a and b are antipodal unit vector in a Minkowki pace, then aob i an aborbing angle. Proof. Since the union of the egment oa and ob form a hortet path from a to b, thee two egment form a SMT of {o, a, b}, hence aob i aborbing. The convere of the above lemma i not necearily true, a the Euclidean norm how. We call the unit ball of a Minkowki pace Steiner antipodal if two point a and b on the boundary of the unit ball are antipodal whenever aob i aborbing. Theorem 2. Conider the following propertie of a et {p,..., p k } of unit vector in a Minkowki pace M d. (4) (5) (6) (7) All angle p i op j are aborbing. All ditance p i p j = 2. k The tar [o, p i ] i a SMT of {p,..., p k }. The tar i= k [o, p i ] i a SMT of {o, p,..., p k }. i= Then the implication (5) (6) (7) (4) hold. Furthermore, (4) to (7) are equivalent if, and only if, the norm i Steiner antipodal. Proof. (6) (7) i true, ince all Steiner tree of {o, p,..., p k } are alo Steiner tree of {p,..., p k }, by conidering o to be a Steiner point. (7) (4) hold, ince if any tar [o, p i ] [o, p j ] can be hortened, it would alo horten the tar k i= [o, p i]. The implication (4) (5) i equivalent to the definition of Steiner antipodality. Thi leave (5) (6). Note that the given tar i a Steiner tree of length k. It i ufficient to how that all Steiner tree have length k. However, note that the open unit ball centered at the p i are pairwie dijoint, ince p i p j = 2 for ditinct i j. Any Steiner tree will have to join each p i to the boundary of the unit ball with centre p i. The part of the Steiner tree inide thi ball mut therefore have length at leat. It follow that the length of any Steiner tree mut be at leat k. In order to apply thi reult, we need a characterization of Steiner antipodal norm in term of duality. Propoition. The following are equivalent in any Minkowki pace M d : (8) (9) The norm i Steiner antipodal. The unit ball i a polytope and any two dijoint face of the dual unit ball are at ditance >.
ABSORBING ANGLES, STEINER MINIMAL TREES, AND ANTIPODALITY 4 p p 2 p k q q 2 q k m Figure. Proof. (8) (9) i immediate from the definition of Steiner antipodality and Lemma. (8) (9) follow upon noting that if a convex body i not a polytope, then there are dijoint expoed face that are arbitrarily cloe to each other. A Minkowki pace i a CL-pace if for every maximal proper face F of the unit ball B we have B = conv(f ( F )). It i eaily een from finite dimenionality that the unit ball of a CL-pace i a polytope. CL-pace were introduced by R. E. Fullerton (ee [7]), although the notion ha been tudied before by Hanner [], who proved that the unit ball of CL-pace are {0, }-polytope. McGregor [6] howed that CL-pace are exactly thoe pace with numerical index. What i important for our purpoe i that CL-pace turn out to be Steiner antipodal. Hanner [] identified an important ubcla of CL-pace, namely thoe that can be built up from the one-dimenional pace R uing l -um and l -um. For two Minkowki pace M and N of dimenion d and e we define their l -um M N and l -um M N to be the Minkowki pace on R d+e with norm (x, y) = x + y and (x, y) = max{ x, y }. Note that the unit ball of M N i the convex hull of the unit ball of M when embedded a M {o} and the unit ball of N when embedded a {o} N. The unit ball of M N i the Carteian product of the unit ball of M and N. The unit ball of thee pace are called Hanner polytope. We thu introduce the name Hanner pace for thee pace. For more information ee [, 3, 2, 7]. We ummarize the above dicuion a follow. Propoition 2. All Hanner pace are CL-pace. All CL-pace are Steiner antipodal. Proof. It i clear and well-known that Hanner pace are CL-pace (ee, e.g., [7]). It i alo well-known that the dual of a CL-pace i a CL-pace a well [6]. To prove the econd part of the propoition, it i by Propoition ufficient to how that any two dijoint face F and G of the unit ball B are at ditance >. Suppoe that F i contained in the facet F. Then all vertice of B dijoint from F mut lie in the oppoite facet F. It follow that G F, and F and G are therefore at ditance Proof of Theorem Lemma 3. Let l be a line paing through a Steiner point of a SMT T in a Minkowki plane M 2. Aume that l i parallel to a regular direction. Then T ha edge incident to in both open half plane bounded by l. Proof. Without any aumption on l, the edge incident to cannot all lie in the ame open half plane bounded by l. Indeed, uch a tree can be hortened a follow (Fig. ). Let ome line m interect the interior of each edge p i, i =,..., k, in q i, ay. Remove edge p, p k, and q i, i = 2,..., k, and add edge p q 2, q i q i+, 2 i k 2, and q k p k, to obtain a new Steiner tree T, without the Steiner point, but with new Steiner point q i, 2 i k. By the triangle inequality, l(t ) l(t ) k i=2 q i > 0, contradicting the minimality of T. We now aume that l i parallel to a regular direction. It i ufficient to how that p and p k cannot be oppoite edge both on l, with all other p i, 2 i k, on the ame ide of l (Fig. 2). Let 2 be a variable point on p 2 with 2 mall. Denote the interection of l
ABSORBING ANGLES, STEINER MINIMAL TREES, AND ANTIPODALITY 5 p 2 p 3 p k p 2 3 k Figure 2. p k 2 p k and p i by i, i = 3,..., k. Change the Steiner tree T a follow. Remove edge p, p k and i, i = 2,..., k, and add edge p 2 and 2 p k. Thi remove the Steiner point and introduce new Steiner point 2,..., k. Denoting the new tree by T, it follow that the length change by l(t ) l(t ) k = 2 p + 2 p k p p k i ( p ) + ( 2 ) p + ( p k ) + ( 2 ) p k 2. Since p and p k are parallel to a regular direction, the norm i differentiable at both point, i.e., ( p ) + ( 2 ) p lim = u, and ( p k ) + ( 2 ) p k lim = u, (Since p and p k are in oppoite direction, their dual are oppoite in ign.) It follow that l(t ) l(t ) u, 2 + u, 2 + o( 2 ) 2 = o( 2 ) 2, which i negative if 2 i ufficiently mall. Then l(t ) < l(t ), a contradiction. Proof of Theorem. Without lo of generality, the egment op,..., op k are ordered around o. Aume that all angle p i op j are aborbing. We tart off with an arbitrary SMT of {o, p,..., p k } and modify it in two tep without increaing the length. In Step we eliminate all Steiner point in the interior of the angle p i op i+. In Step 2 we eliminate all edge between vertice on different ray op i. The edge of the final SMT are then all contained in the the union of the egment op i, i =,..., k. Thi tree cannot have Steiner point, and o ha to be the tar with centre o. Thi conclude the proof. Step : For each angle p i op i+ (where we let k + 0), chooe a regular direction r i not contained in the (cloed) angle. Chooe p i op i and q i op i+ uch that p i q i i parallel to r i (Fig. 3). For each point in the interior of p i op j, write = αp + βq (uniquely, and then, moreover, α, β > 0) and define the meaure of to be := α + β. Define the meaure T of any Steiner tree T of {o, p,..., p k } to be the um of the meaure of all Steiner point of T not on any ray op i. Let i=2 µ = inf{ T : T i a SMT of {o, p,..., p k }}.
p i q i r i ABSORBING ANGLES, STEINER MINIMAL TREES, AND ANTIPODALITY 6 p i pi+ o Figure 3. p i pi+ p i pi+ x 3 l x x 2 r i x 3 x 2 x o o (a) (b) Figure 4. Let T n be a equence of SMT of {o, p,..., p k } with lim n T n = µ. Since there are only finitely many combinatorial type of Steiner tree on a et of k+ point, we may, by paing to a ubequence, aume without lo of generality that all T n have the ame combinatorial type with Steiner point (n),..., (n) m, ay. By taking further ubequence, we may aume that each equence of Steiner point converge, ay (n) i i, i =,..., m. In the limit we obtain a Steiner tree T 0 with l(t 0 ) = lim n l(t n ), hence T 0 i a SMT. Alo, T 0 lim n T n, ince the meaure of a Steiner point i continuou in the interior of an angle, hence lim n (n) i = i if i i till in the interior of the ame angle, otherwie lim n (n) i i = 0 if i i on one of the ray op j. Therefore, T 0 = µ. It remain to how that µ = 0, ince thi will imply that T 0 doe not have any Steiner point in the interior of an angle. Suppoe that µ > 0. We obtain a contradiction by contructing a SMT T with T < µ. Let be a Steiner point of T 0 in the interior of p i op i+, ay (Fig. 4(a)). Without lo of generality there i no point of T 0 in the tranlated angle + p i op i+, ince uch a point i necearily another Steiner point and we may then repeatedly chooe a new Steiner point in + p i op i+, until thi procedure halt. Let l be the line through parallel to r i. The point on l in the interior of p i op i+ all have the ame meaure, and the point on the ame ide of l a o have maller meaure. By Lemma 3 there i an edge x incident to on the ame ide of l a o. There are at leat two more edge x 2 and x 3. Since not all edge are in an open half plane bounded by a line through, we may chooe x 2 and x 3 uch that the angle x 2 x 3 contain the tranlated angle + p op 2 in it interior (with excluded). It follow that there i a point on x ufficiently cloe to uch that x 2 x 3 contain the tranlate + p op 2, and o i till aborbing (Figure 4(b)). We may therefore replace the edge x 2, x 3 and by x 2 and x 3 without lengthening T 0, to obtain a new SMT T. However, <, hence T < T = µ, which give the required contradiction.
ABSORBING ANGLES, STEINER MINIMAL TREES, AND ANTIPODALITY 7 Step 2: Note that for any aborbing angle p i op j, p i o + p j o + o o p i p j + p j p j + o p j, i.e., p i p j p i. Suppoe that the SMT T ha an edge between two point on different egment, ay between q i on op i and q j on op j. Without lo of generality, the unique path in T from o to q i pae through q j (otherwie interchange q i and q j ). Since q i oq j i aborbing, q i q j q i. We can then replace the edge q i q j by oq j, without loing connectivity and without lengthening T. Thi proce may be repeated until all edge are on the egment op i, which finihe Step 2. Reference. O.
