1 arxiv: v [math.ca] 3 Sep 07 On the unit ditance problem A. Ioevich Abtract. The Erdő unit ditance conjecture in the plane ay that the number of pair of point from a point et of ize n eparated by a fixed (Euclidean) ditance i C ǫn +ǫ for any ǫ > 0. The bet known bound i Cn3. 4 We how that if the et under conideration i wellditributed and the fixed ditance i much maller than the diameter of the et, then the exponent 4 i ignificantly improved. Correponding reult are alo etablihed in higher dimenion. The 3 reult are obtained by olving the correponding continuou problem and uing a continuouto-dicrete converion mechanim. The degree of harpne of reult i teted uing the known reult on the ditribution of lattice point dilate of convex domain. We alo introduce the following variant of the Erdő unit ditance problem: how many pair of point from a et of ize n are eparated by an integer ditance? We obtain ome reult in thi direction and formulate a conjecture.. Introduction One of the hardet longtanding conjecture in extremal combinatoric i the Erdő unit ditance conjecture ([], ee alo []). It ay that if P i a planar point et with n point, then the number of pair of element of P a fixed Euclidean ditance apart i bounded by C ǫ n +ǫ for every ǫ > 0. The bet known bound, obtain by Spencer, Szemeredi and Trotter ([7]) i Cn 4 3. An intereting development occurred in 005 when Pavel Valtr ([8]) proved that if the Euclidean ditance i replaced by a ditance induced by the norm defined by a bounded convex et with a mooth boundary and non-vanihing curvature, then the Cn 4 3 bound i, in general, bet poible. The purpoe of thi paper i to how in the realm of well-ditributed et that the Cn 4 3 can be ignificantly improved if we count the number of pair of point eparated by a ditance that i much maller than the diameter of the et. Our main reult i the following. Definition.. We ay that P R d of ize n i well-ditributed if there exit c > 0 uch that p p c and every unit lattice cube in R d [0,n d] d contain exactly one point of P. Theorem.. Let B be a ymmetric bounded convex et in R d, d, with a mooth boundary and everywhere non-vanihing Gauian curvature. Let P be a well-ditributed et of ize n. Then for k (,nd), } (.) # {(p,p ) P P : k p p B k +n d d(d+) Cn d+ Λ, The author wa partially upported by NSA H
2 A. IOSEVICH where ( k Λ = n d )d. ( In particular, if d =, the left hand ide of (.) i bounded by Cn 4 3 improvement over the known Cn 4 3 bound when k = o(n ). k n ), which i an Remark.3. When k n d, Theorem. i implicit in the main reult in [], but the key feature here i the dependence on k with the reulting improvement when k = o(n d). Alo, we hall prove below that in the cae k n d, the etimate provided by Theorem. i harp. See alo [4] where the continuou-dicrete correpondence i ued in revere in order to obtain harpne example for Falconer type etimate. Remark.4. Note that the left hand ide of (.) i trivially bounded by Cn k d. Therefore, the etimate in Theorem. i only intereting when k >> n d 4 (d )(d+) + d(d ). For example, in dimenion two thi threhold i n 6. We alo tudy the following variant of the Erdő unit ditance problem. How many pair of point from a et of n point in R d, d, are eparated by an integer ditance? When P = Z [0,n d] d, it i not difficult to ee that the number of uch pair i n d. Conjecture.5. Let P R d, d =,3, be a finite point et of ize n. Then #{(p,p ) P P : p p Z} Cn d. In higher dimenion thi conjecture i not true, in general, due to the exitence of the celebrated Len example (ee e.g. []) which how that in dimenion 4 and higher there exit P R d of ize n uch that #{(p,p ) P P : p p = } cn. But in the etting of well-ditributed et, Conjecture.5 till make ene when d 4. The following reult follow eaily from Theorem.. Theorem.6. Let P be a well-ditributed et of ize n. Then #{(p,p ) P P : dit( p p,z) < n d d(d+) } Cn d+ + d = n d n d(d+)... Sharpne of reult. The reult aociated with the lattice point counting problem provide a ueful tool for teting harpne of Theorem.. Let n d and P = Z d B( 0,0), the ball of radiu 0 centered at the origin. Let N d (R) denote the number of element of Z d inide the ball of radiu R centered at the origin. It i known (ee e.g [8]) that N d (R) = ω d R d +D d (R), where ω d i the volume of the unit ball, D (R) C ǫ R ǫ ([9]), D 3 (R) C ǫ R 6 +ǫ ([6]), and D d (R) C ǫ R d +ǫ for d 4 ([5]). Then # We have } ( {(p,p ) P P : p p + d d+ C d N N ) ) ( + d d+ N(). ) d ) ( + d d+ ) N() = ω d + d+) d d +D ( + d d+ D().
3 ON THE UNIT DISTANCE PROBLEM 3 Uing the bound on D(R) decribed above, we ee that N ( + d d+ ) N() c d d d+, which implie that #{(p,p ) P P : p p + d d+ } C d + d d+ n d+, proving that Theorem. i harp when k nd. When k <<, we can conclude that N (k + d d+ ) N(k) ck d d d+ if the right hand ide i larger than the error term meaured in term of the bound on D d (R) decribed above. Thi happen for a range of k. In thi range, #{(p,p ) P P : p p k + d d+ } Ck d d d d+. The right hand ide i maller then the bound obtained by Theorem. when k = o(n d). Thi may indicate that Theorem. i not harp in thi range, but it i alo poible that a more ophiticated harpne example may be found. The contruction above applied to n d annuli how that when k n d, the concluion of Theorem.6 i harp... Acknowledgement. The author wihe to thank Adam Sheffer and Joh Zahl for ome very helpful remark and uggetion. For d < < d, define. By a direct calculation, I i bounded. Uing the eparation between p and p, we ee that ( ) ( ) II d d p p p φ φ p d p p P = d p p P φ ( ) p φ ( p ) p p. Uing the well-ditributivity aumption on P we may replace the um by the integral and thu the uantity i bounded. Thi complete the proof of Lemma.. We have hown above that 3.
