2 DEATHS. In 2009, Florida resident deaths decreased to 169,854. This is a 0.4 percent decrease from The overall resident death rate per 1,000 population decreased 1.1 percent from 9.1 per 1,000 population in 2008 to 9.0 per 1,000 population in The White male and Black and Other Race male death rates remained unchanged between 2008 and 2009 at 10.4 and 6.1, respectively. The White female rate decreased from 9.4 per 1,000 population in 2008 to 9.3 per 1,000 population in The Black and Other Race female death rate increased from 5.2 per 1,000 population in 2008 to 5.3 per 1,000 population in Of all resident deaths in 2009, 88.0 percent were to people of Non-Hispanic and Non-Haitian origin, 11.1 percent were to people of Hispanic origin, 0.8 percent were to people of Haitian origin, and 0.1 percent were to people whose ethnicity was unknown.. In 2009, cremations outnumbered burials among Whites (60.5 percent to 27.2 percent). Among Blacks, burials outnumbered cremations 64.4 percent to 26.9 percent. For Other races, cremations outnumbered burials 53.4 percent to 35.6 percent.. Heart disease was the leading cause of death in 2009, accounting for 24.3 percent of all deaths. The age-adjusted death rate for heart disease has steadily decreased since 1970 from per 100,000 population to per 100,000 population. Heart disease was the leading cause of death among individuals 85 years or older, accounting for 31.8 percent of deaths in this age group.. Malignant neoplasm (cancer) was the second leading cause of death in 2009, accounting for almost 24.0 percent of all deaths. The age-adjusted death rate for cancer has steadily decreased since 1990 from per 100,000 population to per 100,000 population. was the leading cause of death for individuals aged accounting for 45.4 percent of the total deaths in this age group.. However, the Black and Other Race female rate increased from 4.9 per 100,000 population in 2008 to 5.2 per 100,000 in There were 180 fewer HIV deaths in 2009 than in 2008, representing a 12.7 percent decrease. The age-adjusted death rate for HIV has steadily declined from 11.4 per 100,000 population in 2000 to 6.5 per 100,000 population in The resident 2009 HIV death rate for Black and Other Race males (25.9 per 100,000 persons) was the highest in comparison to the rates for White males (5.0 per 100,000 population), White females (1.3 per 100,000 population), and Black and Other Race females (16.2 per 100,000 population).
