Inverse Vetor Operators Shaon Sahoo arxiv:0804.9v [math-ph] 4 Apr 008 Department of Physis, Indian Institute of Siene, Bangalore 5600, India. Abstrat In different branhes of physis, we frequently deal with vetor del operator ( ). This del operator is generally used to find url or divergene of a vetor funtion or gradient of a salar funtion. In many important ases, we need to know the parent vetor whose url or divergene is known or require to find the parent salar funtion whose gradient is known. But the task is not very easy, espeially in ase of url. Here, inverse url, inverse divergene and inverse gradient operators are defined to solve those problems easily. All operators are defined in the orthogonal urvilinear o-ordinate system. Keywords del operator, url, gradient, divergene, solenoidal vetor, vetor potentials, urvilinear oordinate system.. Inverse Curl Operator At first we indiate some useful symbols. a. ( ) indiates inverse url operator. b. ( + )(u ) does integration w.r.t. u, while other two variables of the integrand are to be treated fixed. If the integrand is the rd omponent (along u urve) of a vetor, then (u ) ats only on the part of the integrand having the variable u. Similarly (u ) ats only on the part of the integrand does not ontain the variable u. For example, let φ(u,u,u ) Ψ (u,u )+Ψ (u,u,u ) be the omponent of a vetor along u urve, then, ( + )φu Ψ u + Ψ u (u,u are to be treated onstant). Let ê, ê and ê be the three tangent vetors to the o-ordinate urves. Now take two vetors A A ê + A ê + A ê and B B ê + B ê + B ê, suh that, B A () Using inverse url operator, this vetor potential A an be expressed as, From () it is obvious that, B ( A) 0 shaon@physis.iis.ernet.in A ( ) B ()
h h h u h B )+ h B )+ h B )] 0 u [ (u + )+ (u )]+ [ (u + )+ (u )]+ [ (u + )+ (u )] 0 u (u + )+ (u + )+ (u + ) 0 () Where (u + ) and (u ) are two parts of the term h h B, ontains and does not ontain u respetively. Similarly, other terms an be defined. Obviously h h B (u + )+ (u ), and so on for other terms. From () we get, B A h h h u h ê h ê h ê h A h A h A B ê + B ê + B ê ê h h u A ) u A )] + ê h h A ) u A )] + ê h h u A ) u A )] Now, we have to hoose h A, h A and h A in suh a way that, r.h.s. of the above expression beomes similar to l.h.s. Let (by inspetion), h A k (u + ) + k (u + ) + k (u ) + k 4 (u ) Similarly, h A k 5 (u + )u + k 6 (u + ) + k 7 (u )u + k 8 (u ) and, h A k 9 (u + ) + k 0 (u + )u + k (u ) + k (u )u where, k,k,,k are some onstants to be determined. (Note that, terms are not inluded for h A, sine, it does not appear in the expression of st omponent, B. So on for other two ases.) Now, see the oeffiient of ê on the r.h.s. of the expression, h h u A ) A )] h h u {k 5 (u + )u + k 6 (u + )u + k 7 (u )u + k 8 (u )} u {k (u + )u + k (u + )u + k (u )u + k 4 (u )}] h h [k 5 (u + )+k 6 u (u + ) + k 7 (u )+k 8 0 k k (u + ) k 0 k 4 (u )] (u + ) h h [k 5 (u + ) k { u (u + )+ u (u + )} + k 7 (u )] [Taking k 5 k, k 7 k 4 and k 6 k ]
h h [k 5 (u + ) k { u (u + )} + k 7 (u )] [Using eqn ()] h h [k 5 (u + )+k (u + )+k 7 (u )] h h [k 5 (u + )+k 7 (u )] [Taking k k 5 ] h h [ (u + )+ (u )] [Considering k 5/ and k 7 /] h h [ (u + )+ (u )] h h h B ) B Similarly we an show that, if, k k 5 k 9 k k 6 k 0 / and, k k 7 k k 4 k 8 k /, then, h h A ) A )] B and h h A ) u A )] B So, using these values of k,k,,k, we get, A h [ (u + ) (u + )]+ h [ (u ) (u )] A h [ (u + )u (u + )]+ h [ (u )u (u )] A h [ (u + ) (u + )u ]+ h [ (u ) (u )u ] Now from (), we get, ( ) B A A ê + A ê + A ê ê h [ (u + ) (u + )]+ ê h [ (u ) (u )] + ê h [ (u + )u (u + )]+ ê h [ (u )u (u )] + ê h [ (u + ) (u + )u ]+ ê h [ (u ) (u )u ] ê (u ) (u ) h (u + ) (u + ) + ê (u ) (u ) h (u + ) (u + ) ê (u ) (u ) h (u + ) (u + ) ê (u ) (u ) h (u ) (u ) + ê (u ) (u ) h (u ) (u ) ê (u ) (u ) h (u ) (u )
ê ê ê h h h ê ê ê h h h (u ) (u ) (u ) (u ) (u ) (u ) (u + ) (u + ) (u + ) (u ) (u ) (u ) ê ê ê h h h (u ) (u ) (u ) (u + )+ (u ) (u + )+ (u ) (u + )+ (u ) ê ê ê h h h ( + )(u ) ( + )( ) ( + )( ) h h B h h B h h B So, this is the desired expression for our inverse url operator. Sine, ( φ) 0, so, it should be noted that, for a given solenoidal vetor, there are many vetor potentials, whih an be in general expressed as, - A ( ) B+ φ where φ is an arbitrary salar funtion. One example in Cartesian system would larify the proedure of getting vetor potential from a solenoidal vetor. In this system, ê, ê, ê, u, u and u are respetively replaed by î, ĵ, ˆk, x, y, and z. Here h h h. Now take a solenoidal vetor B (xyz+y )î+(xz+y) ĵ z(+yz/)ˆk. (note B 0) So, vetor potentials of ˆB are,- A ( ) B+ φ î ĵ ˆk ( + )(x) ( + )(y) ( + )(z) xyz+y xz+y z yz / + φ î[ ( z yz /)y+ 0y yz xzz] ĵ[ xyzz+ y z ( z yz /)x 0x] 4
ˆk[ yx+ xzx xyzy y y]+ φ î[(zy+z y /4)/+(yz/+xz /4)] ĵ[(zx+yxz /)/+(xyz /6+y z/)] + ˆk[ (yx/+x z/4)+xy z/6+y /6]+ φ Verifiation of the esult: î ĵ ˆk A x y z + ( φ) (zy+z y /4)/ (zx+xyz /)/ (yx/+x z/4) +(yz/+xz /4) (xyz /6+y z/) +(xy z/6+y /6) î(xyz+y )+ ĵ(xz+y) ˆkz(+yz/)+0 B. Inverse Divergene Operator Here we indiate this operator by ( ). Now if A and φ be a vetor and a salar funtion respetively, suh that φ A h h h u h A )+ u h A )+ u h A )], then A an be expressed as A ( ) φ, We an here define the operator as (by inspetion), ( ) ê k ê h h h h h (u )+k ê h h h h h ( )+k h h h h h ( ) where, k + k + k. Justifiation: For a given φ, A ( ) φ k ê h h h h h φ(u )+k ê h h h h h φ( )+k ê h h h h h φ( ) Now note that, divergene of the obtained vetor gives the salar funtion φ, A h h h [k h h h φ+k h h h φ+k h h h φ] (k + k + k )φ φ Sine, ( B) 0, so, it should be noted that for a given salar funtion, we an find many vetors, whih an be expressed as, A ( ) φ+ B where B is any vetor. 5
. Inverse Gradient Operator We indiate this operator by ( ) Let A A ê +A ê +A ê and φ(u,u,u ) be a vetor and a salar funtion, suh that A φ. So, vetor field represented by A is onservative, thus, line integral of A is path independent. Choose (a,b,) as initial point, suh that φ(a,b,) exists. Now φ(u,u,u ) (u,u,u ) dφ (a,b,) + 0 [ 0 is integration onstant] (u,u,u ) ( φ) dr (a,b,) (u,u,u ) A dr (a,b,) (a,b,u ) A h du (a,b,) + (a,u,u ) A h du (a,b,u ) + (u,u,u ) A h du (a,u,u ) + 0 So, φ ( ) A u a u u A h u + A h + A h + 0 b u u a a u b Here in the first integration u is variable but other two (u,u ) are fixed, and so on for other two integrations.
