The method of Fourier transforms applied to eletromagneti knots arxiv: v [math-ph] 3 Sep 08. Introdution M Arrayás and J L Trueba Área de Eletromagnetismo, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Tulipán s/n, 8933 Móstoles, Madrid, Spain manuel.arrayas@urj.es, joseluis.trueba@urj.es Abstrat. The Fourier transform method an be applied to obtain eletromagneti knots, whih are solutions of Maxwell equations in vauum with non-trivial topology of the field lines and espeial properties. The program followed in this work allows to present the main ideas and the expliit alulations at undergraduate level, so they are not obsured by a more involved formulation. We make use of heliity basis for alulating the eletromagneti heliity and the photon ontent of the fields. The appliation of topology ideas to eletromagnetism has led to the finding of new solutions of Maxwell equations in vauum [], some of them with the property of nonnullity [] and with other interesting properties in terms of heliity exhange [3] and spin-orbital deomposition [4]. In this artile we want to introdue one of the methods used in the urrent researh of eletromagneti knots at undergraduate level. Only a basi knowledge of the Fourier transform is required by the student. The ontent of this artile an be proposed to the students as a set of advaned problems exploring speial topis suh as the duality [5] and gauge transforms, the formulation of Cauhy problem in eletromagnetism, heliity basis [6], and photon polarization. We hope that it will help to larify and review some onepts and ideas through expliit examples. For instane, in many introdutory ourses, eletromagneti fields in vauum are presented in terms of planar waves. The planar eletromagneti waves are null fields[7], and this leads quite often to the misoneption that all the eletromagneti fields in vauum must satisfy the property E = B, E B = 0. Here we work it out expliitly the alulations of non-null torus fields with the only use of Fourier transforms, so we obtain a solution where eletri and magneti fields are not orthogonal. At the same time the student is alulating a rather non-trivial solution of Maxwell equations in vauum, whih many of its properties being the subjet of undergoing researh [8, 9].
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots We make a brief summary of Maxwell theory in vauum, formulate the Cauhy problem and introdue the Fourier deomposition of the initial values of the fields. We show how solve the time evolution by making the inverse Fourier transform so expressing the fields as wave pakages determined by the initial onditions. We then obtain the potential assoiated to the fields in the Coulomb gauge. The heliity basis are used to express the potential as ombinations of irularly polarized waves. The heliity basis are useful to introdue the magneti, eletri and eletromagneti heliities. The heliity of a vetor field is a useful quantity to haraterize some topologial properties of the fields, suh as the linkage of the field lines and the eletromagneti heliity an be related to the different of right- and leftphotons ontent of the field in Quantum Mehanis. We will apply this program to a set of knotted eletromagneti fields, inluding the partiular ase of the elebrated Hoft-Rañada solution, alled the Hopfion.. Maxwell theory in vauum Eletromagnetism in vauum three-dimensional spae an be desribed in terms of two real vetor fields, E and B, alled the eletri and magneti fields respetively. Using the SI of Units, these fields satisfy the following Maxwell equations in vauum, B = 0, E+ B = 0, t E = 0, B E = 0, t where is the speed of light, t is time and denotes differentiation with respet to spae oordinates r = x,y,z. The first two equations are identities using the following four-vetor eletromagneti potential in the Minkowski spaetime with oordinates x 0 = t,x = x,x = y,x 3 = z and metri g = diag,,,, V A µ =,A. 3 In equation 3, A 0 = V/, where V is the salar eletri potential, and A = A,A,A 3 is the vetor eletromagneti potential. Greek indies as µ take values 0,,,3 and latin indies as i take values,,3. An eletromagneti field tensor F µν an be defined as F µν = µ A ν ν A µ, 4 with omponents related to the eletri and magneti fields through E i = F i0, B i = ǫ ijkf jk. 5 In three-dimensional quantities, equation 4 is E = V A t, B = A. 6
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 3 The first pair of Maxwell equations beome a pair of identities by using 6. The dynamis of eletromagnetism in vauum is then given by the seond pair of Maxwell equations, that an be written in spaetime quantities as µ F µν = 0. 7 Maxwell equations - are invariant under the map E,B B, E, as stated in [5]. This means that, in vauum, it is possible to define another four-potential C µ = V,C, 8 so that the dual of the eletromagneti tensor F µν, defined as F µν = ε µναβf αβ, 9 satisfies F µν = µc ν ν C µ, 0 or, in terms of three-dimensional fields, E = C, B = V + C t. In this dual formulation, the pair of equations are simply identities when definitions are imposed, and the dynamis of eletromagnetism in vauum is given by the first pair of Maxwell equation, written in terms of omponents of the four-potential C µ. Alternatively, Maxwell equations in vauum an be desribed in terms of two sets of vetor potentials, as in definitions 4 and 0, that satisfy the duality ondition 9. In this way, dynamis is enoded in the duality ondition. 3. Fourier deomposition for eletromagneti fields in vauum The method of Fourier transforms [0] an be used to get solutions of Maxwell equations in vauum - from initial onditions for the eletri and the magneti fields. Here we review some basis for the ase of eletromagneti fields defined in all the threedimensional spae R 3 that satisfy equations -. Suppose that initial values of the eletri and magneti fields, E 0 r = Er,t = 0, B 0 r = Br,t = 0, are given and defined in R 3. It is neessary that they satisfy the onditions E 0 = 0, B 0 = 0. 3 These onditions assure that the eletri and the magneti fields will be divergeneless at any time, sine Maxwell equations in vauum onserve them. For example, in the ase of the eletri field, E = t E = B = 0, 4 t
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 4 where equation has been used. A similar omputation an be done for the magneti field. To solve Maxwell equations in vauum with Cauhy onditions given by fields that satisfy 3, plane wave solutions an be proposed, suh that they an be deomposed in Fourier terms, Er,t = d 3 k E π 3/ ke ik r ωt +E ke ik r+ωt, Br,t = d 3 k B π 3/ ke ik r ωt +B ke ik r+ωt, 5 where ω = k and k = k k. Taking t = 0 in 5, we get E 0 r = d 3 ke π 3/ k+e ke ik r, B 0 r = d 3 kb π 3/ k+b ke ik r, 6 so that the vetors E 0 k = E k+e k, B 0 k = B k+b k, 7 are inverse Fourier transforms of the initial values, E 0 k = d 3 re π 3/ 0 re ik r, B 0 k = d 3 rb π 3/ 0 re ik r, 8 and they satisfy k E 0 k = 0, k B 0 k = 0, 9 beause of 3. Now, in expressions 5, we impose the pair of Maxwell equations B = / E/ t and E = B/ t. Taking then t = 0 and using 7, we get the onditions k E 0 k = kb k B k, k B 0 k = k E k E k. 0 From 0, we obtain a solution for the vetors in k-spae, namely E k = E 0k e k B 0 k, E k = E 0k+ e k B 0 k, B k = B 0k+ e k E 0 k, B k = B 0k e k E 0 k,
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 5 where we have defined the unit vetor e k = k k. Consequently, the time-dependent fields are obtained omputing first the Fourier transforms 8 of the initial values, and then performing the Fourier integrals Er,t = d 3 ke ik r E π 3/ 0 kosωt ie k B 0 ksinωt, Br,t = d 3 ke B ik r π 3/ 0 kosωt+ i e k E 0 ksinωt, 3 By examining equations 7 one an see that the omplex Fourier basis omponents satisfy E 0 k = Ē0k, B 0 k = B 0 k, 4 where Ē0 is the omplex onjugate of E 0. The Fourier transforms an be written in other ways. We begin by taking osωt = e iωt +e iωt /, sinωt = e iωt e iωt /i, in equations 3, to get [ Er,t = d 3 k e ik r e iωt π 3/ E 0k e k B 0 k + e ik r e iωt E 0k+ ] e k B 0 k, [ Br,t = d 3 k e ik r e iωt π 3/ B 0k+ e k E 0 k + e ik r e iωt B 0k ] e k E 0 k. 5 Next we perform the hange k k in the seond terms of both fields we an do it beause the variable k is the variable of integration. Taking into aount the properties 4, we get [ Er,t = d 3 k e ikx π 3/ Ē0k e k B 0 k + e ikx E 0k ] e k B 0 k, [ Br,t = d 3 k e ikx π 3/ B 0 k+ e k Ē0k + e ikx B 0k+ ] e k E 0 k, 6 where we have introdued the four-dimensional notation kx = ωt k r. 4. Fourier transforms of vetor potentials in the Coulomb gauge The vetor potentials an also be written in this Fourier basis when we hoose the Coulomb gauge for them. In the Coulomb gauge, the vetor potentials are hosen so
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 6 that V = 0, A = 0, V = 0, C = 0. 7 As a onsequene, they satisfy the duality equations B = A = C t, E = C = A t. 8 In this gauge, one an propose for them the following Fourier deomposition in terms of plane waves, Ar,t = d 3 k [ e ikx āk+e ikx ak ], π 3/ Cr,t = d 3 k [ e ikx k+e ikx k ], 9 π 3/ where the fator in C is taken by dimensional reasons. Taking time derivatives and using 8, E = A t = d 3 k [ e ikx ikāk e ikx ikak ], π 3/ B = C t = d 3 k [ e ikx ik k+e ikx ikk ]. 30 π 3/ By omparison with equations 6, one gets ak = i k E 0k e k B 0 k, k = i k B 0k+e k E 0 k. 3 Consequently, in the Coulomb gauge, the vetor potentials of the eletromagneti field in vauum an be deomposed in the Fourier basis as i d 3 k [ Ar,t = e ikx Ē0k+e π 3/ k k B 0 k 5. Heliity basis + e ikx E 0 k e k B 0 k ], i d 3 k [ Cr,t = e ikx π 3/ k B 0 k+e k Ē0k + e ikx B 0 k e k E 0 k ]. 3 The heliity Fourier omponents appear when the vetor potentials A and C, in the Coulomb gauge, are written as a ombination of irularly polarized waves [6], as µ0 d 3 k [ Ar,t = e ikx a π 3/ R ke R k+a L ke L k+c.c. ], k Cr,t = µ 0 d 3 k [ ie ikx a π 3/ R ke R k a L ke L k+c.c. ] 33. k
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 7 where is the Plank onstant, µ 0 is the vauum magneti permeability and C.C. means omplex onjugate. The Fourier omponents in the heliity basis are given by the omplex unit vetors e R k, e L k, e k = k/k, and the heliity omponents a R k, a L k that, in the quantum theory, are interpreted as annihilation operators of photon states with right- and left-handed polarization, respetively ā R k, ā L k are, in quantum theory, reation operators of suh states [6]. The unit vetors in the heliity basis are taken to satisfy the relations, ē R = e L, e R k = e L k, e L k = e R k, e k e R = e k e L = 0, e R e R = e L e L = 0, e R e L =, e k e k = e R e R = e L e L = 0, e k e R = ie R, e k e L = ie L, e R e L = ie k. 34 These relations an be ahieved by taking real vetors e, e in k-spae suh that e e = e e =, e e = e e k = e e k = 0, e e = e k, e k e = e, e e k = e, e k = e k, e k = e k, 35 and onstruting the omplex unit vetors e R = e +ie, e L = e ie. 36 The relation between the heliity basis and the planar Fourier basis an be understood by omparing equations 3 and 33. It is found that: a R e R +a L e L = i Ē 0 k+ie k B 0 k, µ 0 k a R e R a L e L = From these expressions, a R e R = µ 0 k a L e L = µ 0 k µ 0 k B0 k+e k Ē0k. 37 [ B 0 k i Ē0k +ie k B 0 k i ] Ē0k, [ B 0 k+ i Ē0k ie k B 0 k+ i ] Ē0k 38. Consequently, in the heliity basis fields in vauum are written as superposition of irularly polarized waves. The eletri and magneti fields of an eletromagneti field in vauum, and the vetor potentials in the Coulomb gauge, an be expressed in this basis as we do not write the dependene on k in the following expressions for larity: Er,t = µ 0 k [ d 3 k ie ikx a π 3/ R e R +a L e L ie ikx ā R e L +ā L e R ], µ0 k [ Br,t = d 3 k e ikx a π 3/ R e R a L e L +e ikx ā R e L ā L e R ],
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 8 µ0 Ar,t = d 3 k [ e ikx a π 3/ R e R +a L e L +e ikx ā R e L +ā L e R ], k Cr,t = µ 0 d 3 k [ ie ikx a π 3/ R e R a L e L ie ikx ā R e L ā L e R ]. k The unit vetors in this basis satisfy equations 34 and the basis elements are related to the planar Fourier basis through equations 37 or 38. Heliity basis an be used in relation to the heliity of a vetor field [,, 3, 4, 5, 6], that is a useful quantity in the study of topologial onfigurations of eletri and magneti lines. In the ase of eletromagnetism in vauum, the magneti heliity an be defined as the integral h m = µ 0 and the eletri heliity [7, 8, 9, 0] is h e = ε 0 d 3 rc E = 3 µ 0 d 3 ra B, 40 d 3 rc E, 4 where ε 0 = / µ 0 is the vauum eletri permittivity. It an be proved [3, 4] that i if the integral of E B is zero, both the magneti and the eletri heliities are onstant during the evolution of the eletromagneti field, ii if the integral of E B is not zero, the heliities are not onstant but they satisfy dh m /dt = dh e /dt, so we get an interhange of heliities between the magneti and eletri parts of the field, and iii for every value of the integral of E B, the eletromagneti heliity h = h m +h e is a onserved quantity. Using the heliity basis defined in 33, the eletromagneti heliity h of an eletromagneti field in vauum an be written as h = h m +h e = d 3 k ā R ka R k ā L ka L k. 4 From the usual expressions for the number of right- and left-handed photons in Quantum Mehanis, N R = d 3 kā R ka R k, N L = d 3 kā L ka L k, 43 we an write h = N R N L. 44 Consequently, the eletromagneti heliity is the lassial limit of the differene between the numbers of right-handed and left-handed photons [7, 8, ]. 39
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 9 6. Fourier method in the ase of a set of knotted eletromagneti fields There is a set of so-alled non-null torus eletromagneti knots [, ] that are exat solutions of Maxwell equations in vauum with the property that, at a given initial time t = 0, all pairs of lines of the field Br,0 are linked torus knots, and that the linking number is the same for all the pairs. Similarly, all pairs of lines of the field Er,0 are linked torus knots and the linking number of all pairs of lines is the same. Take four positive integers n,m,l,s. Then it is possible to give an initial magneti field suh that all its magneti lines are n,m torus knots. This initial magneti field is [] 8 a B 0 r = my nxz, mx nyz,n X +Y Z,45 πl 0 +R 3 where a is some onstant proportional to the produt µ 0 to give the magneti field its orret dimensions in SI units, L 0 is a onstant with dimensions of length, and we define the dimensionless oordinates X,Y,Z, related to the physial ones x,y,z in the SI of units by so that X,Y,Z = x,y,z L 0, 46 R = X +Y +Z = x +y +z = r. 47 L 0 L 0 The linking number of every two of magneti lines at t = 0 is equal to nm. Similarly, the initial eletri field 8 a E 0 r = πl 0 +R 3 l X Y Z +,lxy sz,lxz +sy, 48 is suh that all its eletri lines are l,s torus knots and any pair of eletri lines has a linking number equal to ls. These topologial properties only happen for t = 0. This is due to the fat that topology hanges during time evolution if one of the integers n,m,l,s is different from any of the others see []. Let us ompute the magneti and eletri fields from the Cauhy onditions 45 and 48, that satisfy the required onditions B 0 = E 0 = 0. We will use the dimensionless time T = t/l 0. Before the omputations, we an use 3 to build the omplex vetor field Br,t+i Er,t = π 3/ + e k [ d 3 ke ik r B 0 k+i E 0k ] B 0 k+i E 0k sinωt osωt, 49 to show that we need first to ompute the omplex vetor field B 0 k+i/e 0 k. Using 8, we get B 0 k+i E 0k = d 3 re ik r B π 3/ 0 r+i E 0r, 50
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 0 where B 0 r and E 0 r are given by 45 and 48 respetively. We are going to use dimensionless oordinates in k-spae, defined by x, y, z = L 0 k x,k y,k z, = L 0 k = L 0ω. 5 The integrals in 50 an be done to give B 0 k+i E 0k = L [ n x z, y z, x π y + im y, x,0 + i l y +z, x y, x z + s0, z, y ]. 5 so the Fourier transform of the initial magneti field B 0 r is B 0 k = L [ n x z, y z, x π y + im y, x,0], 53 and the Fourier transform of the initial magneti field E 0 r is E 0 k = L 0 [ ae l π y +z, x y, x z + is0, z, y ]. 54 Note that the Fourier transforms 53 and 54 satisfy the onditions B 0 k = B 0 k and E 0 k = Ē0k, as was established in 4. Aording to 49, we also need to ompute, using 5, the omplex vetor e k B 0 k+i E 0k = L [n y, x,0 π + i m x z, y z, x y + il0, z, y + s ] y z, x y, x z. 55 The next goal is to ompute the integral 49 that, in terms of dimensionless oordinates in x-spae and k-spae, an be written as Br,t+i Er,t = π 3/ L B 0 +i E 0 [ d 3 e i R B 0 +i E 0 sint It is interesting to ompute first the following integrals, a I = d 3 e i R ost e a 4π L 0 = A πl 0 A +T, a a I = d 3 e i R A T +AT ost =, 4π L 0 πl 0 A +T ost ]. 56
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots a I s = d 3 e i R sint e a 4π L 0 = T πl 0 A +T, a a I s = d 3 e i R T 3 +AT A T sint =, 57 4π L 0 πl 0 A +T in whih A = R T Now we make one useful observation. If, in the integral 56, we need to ompute a term ontaining x times one of the integrands of the expressions 57, we an do it in this way, a d 3 e i R ost e 4π L 0 x = i I X = ix di da, 59 and the same happens with I, I s and I s. If we need to ompute a term ontaining x, we an make a d 3 e i R ost e 4π L 0 x = di d I da X da, 60 and, if we need to ompute a term ontaining x y, a d 3 e i R ost e 4π L 0 x y = XY d I da. 6 Defining the quantities P = TT 3A, Q = AA 3T, 6 we an finally ompute 56, obtaining that the set of non-null torus eletromagneti knots an be written as a QH +P H Br,t = 63 πl 0 A +T 3 a QH 4 P H 3 Er,t = 64 A +T 3 where πl 0 H = nxz +my +st, nyz mx ltz,n Z +X +Y +T +lty H = s +X Y Z T mty,sxy lz +mtx,sxz +ly +nt. 12 Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 7. Heliity basis for the set of eletromagneti knots Let us onsider the heliity basis for the eletromagneti fields we have omputed, sine it is interesting to understand some physial quantities of the eletromagneti field suh as energy, heliity and linear and angular momentum. Using expressions 53 and 54, we get B 0 k = L [ n x z, y z, x π y im y, x,0], Ē 0 k = L 0 [ ae l π y +z, x y, x z so that is0, z, y ], 66 B 0 k i Ē0k = L π [ n x z, y z, x y + s0, z, y im y, x,0, i l y + z, x y, x z ], 67 and e k B 0 k i Ē0k = L [ n y, x,0 π Aording to 38, a L 3/ 0 a R e R = µ 0 4 e π [ n+m x z, y z, x y [ l+s i Similarly, s y +z, ] x y, x z, i m x z, y z, x y il0, z, y ]. 68 ] +l +s0,z, y ] y +z, x y, x z +n+my, x,069. B 0 k+ i Ē0k = L [ n π s0, z, y x z, y z, x y im y, x,0, + i l y +z, ] x y, x z, 70
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 3 and e k B 0 k+ i Ē0k = L [ n y, x,0 π from whih a L 3/ 0 a L e L = µ 0 4 e π [ m n x z, y z, x y [ l s i + s y +z, ] x y, x z, i m x z, y z, x y + il0, z, y ], 7 ] +s l0,z, y ] y +z, x y, x z +n my, x,07. One interesting appliation of these results appears by multiplying a R e R and its omplex onjugate, and the same for a L e L. Using 34, In our ase, ā R ē R a R e R = ā R a R e L e R = ā R a R, ā L ē L a L e L = ā L a L e R e L = ā L a L. 73 ā R a R = a L 3 0e n+m x µ 0 8π + y +l+s y + z + 4n+ml +s y, ā L a L = a L 3 0e n m x + µ 0 8π y+l s y +z + 4n ml s y. 74 From 43, the lassial expressions orresponding to the quantum mehanial number of right- and left-handed photons for our set of eletromagneti knots are N R = d 3 kā R a R = d 3 ā L 3 R a R = a n+m +l+s, 0 µ 0 8 N L = d 3 kā L a L = d 3 ā L 3 L a L = a n m +l s, 75 0 µ 0 8 where we have to remember that the onstant a is proportional to the produt µ 0 beause of dimensional reasons. In the partiular ase of the Hopfion, for whih n = m = l = s =, we have N R Hopfion = a µ 0, N L Hopfion = 0. 76
Fourier transformations and eletromagneti knots 4 If, moreover, we set the arbitrary onstant a to have the value a = µ 0, for the set of eletromagneti knots we are studying we get N R = d 3 kā R a R = d 3 ā L 3 R a R = n+m +l+s, 0 8 N L = d 3 kā L a L = d 3 ā L 3 L a L = n m +l s, and for the Hopfion, N R Hopfion =, N L Hopfion = 0, 78 so the lassial value orresponding to the number of right-handed photons in the Hopfion is, and the lassial value orresponding to the number of left-handed photons is Conlusions Solutions to Maxwell equations in vauum an be obtained by taking an initial eletromagneti field onfiguration, and by Fourier transform, propagating it in time. This onstrution is used in the generation of non-null toroidal eletromagneti fields []. Here we have presented a detailed alulation suitable for students with a basi mathematial bakground. The heliity is a property whih haraterizes some non-trivial topologial behaviour of the field and an be related to its photon ontent when the field is quantized. The Fourier deomposition an be expressed in terms of heliity or irularly polarized basis whih is onvenient in order to alulate the heliity. We have applied the Fourier method to ompute a set of solutions suh that at a partiular time the field lines are torus knots. In the set it is inluded the Hopfion whih is a null field and in general many non-null fields. We believe that the alulations involved are at undergraduate level, so any student with a minimum bakground an rework and hek them. Maxwell equations remains a fundamental ornerstone of our understanding of nature, but one might think that lassial eletromagneti theory of light has obtained its limits of servieability in term of fundamental researh. We hope that this work proves the ontrary. Solutions with new topologial properties may pave a road for future disoveries.
