INRODUCION In quanum fiel heoy in cuve spaces, he mean value of he enegy momenum enso µν x) plays a main ole. When evaluae aoun black holes o collapsing sas, i conains he infomaion abou Hawking aiaion. As a souce in he semiclassical Einsein equaions, i is esponsible fo he quanum coecions o he meic. I is well known ha µν x) is a nonlocal objec, in he sense ha is value a a given poin x may epen of he values of he meic in he pas null cone of x i may also epen on he opology of he manifol). his is clea fo example in cosmological siuaions, whee he numbe of paicles ceae epen on he whole hisoy of he scale faco. I is less obvious fo collapsing sas an black holes Hawking aiaion only epens on he suface gaviy of he black hole), bu in pinciple he exac µν x) shoul epen nonlocally on he meic. Given a spaceime meic, i is in geneal ifficul o compue µν x) exacly. I is even moe ifficul o solve self-consisenly he semiclassical Einsein equaion wih µν x) as a souce, since his woul involve he knowlege of he vacuum polaizaion fo a leas a family of meics. Fo hese easons, i is of inees o evelop appoximaion an numeical schemes. If he quanum fiel is vey massive, he DeWi-Schwinge appoximaion is aequae o escibe he vacuum polaizaion [1]. Howeve, if he mass is small o vanishes, he siuaion is moe complex. hee ae many papes ealing wih his poblem, saing fom hose concene wih confomal fiels in Schwazschil spaceime [, 3, 4, 5]. Analyic appoximaions have been popose fo Schwazschil, Reissne Nosom, an geneal saic spheically symmeic spaceimes, fo boh confomal an non confomal fiels [6]. he appoach of [6] conains as paicula cases he pevious analyic appoximaions [3, 4, 5] o µν x) fo black holes. I has been shown [6] ha he analyic appoximaion epouces he exac esul fo Schwazschil spaceime wih high accuacy in he case of massless scala fiels howeve his is no he case fo spino fiels, see [7]). he iffeen appoximaions o µν x) epen of couse on he quanum sae of he fiel. he saes usually consiee ae he Hale-Hawking, Unuh an Boulwae vacua [8]. he Hale-Hawking sae escibes a black hole in equilibium wih is hemal aiaion. he Unuh sae is he one ha bes mimics he gaviaional collapse of a sa. he Boulwae sae, being ill efine on he hoizon, is unphysical fo black holes. Howeve, i is wiely believe o escibe he quanum vacuum aoun a non-collapse objec like a sa o a plane. Fo hese easons, analyic appoximaions in he Boulwae sae have been use o compue vacuum polaizaion aoun sas [9] an o check he valiiy of he enegy coniions [10]. In he appoximaions menione above, he enegy momenum enso is eemine by local funcions of he meic an is eivaives. Howeve, as we aleay poine ou, on geneal gouns one expecs µν x) o be a nonlocal funcion. In paicula, in he weak fiel appoximaion, a covaian peubaive appoximaion o µν x) is explicily nonlocal [11, 1]. In his pape we will compue µν x) aoun saic spheical sas using his nonlocal appoximaion. We will consie massless fiels wih abiay coupling o he cuvaue in he Boulwae quanum sae. We will compae he esul wih he analyic appoximaions, an show ha he nonlocal pa ominaes. Moeove, we will show ha fom he nonlocal esul one can eive he well known 1/ 3 - quanum coecion o he Newonian poenial [13, 14]. Convesely, we will see ha he nonlocal appoximaion can be easily unesoo fom his quanum coecion an he supeposiion pinciple, vali in he weak fiel appoximaion. he pape is oganize as follows. In he nex secion, as a wam-up, we iscuss he local an nonlocal appoximaions o φ. We expan he nonlocal appoximaionin a mulipola expansion, which shows explicily is epenence wih he inenal sucue of he sa. We also show ha hee ae suface ivegences on he bounay of he sa unless he Ricci enso is sufficienly smooh. In Secion III we compue µν x) in he weak fiel appoximaion fo
2 an abiay, saic, spheically symmeic sa. We poin ou again he epenence on he inne sucue of he sa an he exisence of suface ivegences. Secion IV conains some applicaions: fis we show ha µν x) violaes boh he null enegy an he aveage null enegy coniions. hen we compue quanum coecions o he exeio meic, an fin ha hey epen on he inenal sucue of he sa. Secion V conains a sho iscussion an conclusions. houghou his pape we use unis in which = c = 1, while eaining G = lp 1. Ou sign convenions ae in he nomenclaue of [15] II. NONLOCAL APPROXIMAION FOR φ In his secion we compue he quaniy φ, fo a massless scala fiel wih abiay coupling ξ) o he cuvaue, in a weak backgoun gaviaional fiel. We assume he classical souce ha geneaes he fiel o be saic an non-elaivisic, i.e., is sess enegy enso akes he fom µν x) = ρx)δµδ 0 ν. 0 An expession fo φ can be obaine by aking he coincience limi of he Feynman popagao, φ x) ) = Im lim G Fx,x ), 1) x x an hen enomalizing i. Noice ha his expession has a logaihmic ivegence a he suface of he sa ue o he isconinuiy of he ensiy; his is because he Fouie ansfom of he Heavisie funcion falls only as p 1 when p. In effec, any sa moel wih a non-coninuous ρ a he suface will have a logaihmic ivegence in φ a he poin of isconinuiy. On he ohe han, fo a coninuous ensiy he Fouie ansfoms falls fase o zeo an he ivegence isappeas. he suface ivegence is simila o he ivegences ha appea when compuing he Casimi effec fo pefec conucos of abiay shape. See fo insance [16]. I shoul be noe ha he expession fo φ ousie he sa in Eq. 7), epens no only on he mass of he sa bu also on is aius; in fac, expaning his expession fo > R 0 yiels φ ) = ξ 1 6 ) 4 MG R ) > R 0 ), 8) whee M is he oal mass of he sa. his kin of epenence is geneal fo any sa moel, as can be seen by eplacing Eq. 6) by is mulipola expansion, φ ) = G 4 ξ 1 ) M n 6 n+1, 9) which is exac in he exenal egion fo any spheically symmeic isibuion of mass. he mulipola coefficiens in Eq. 9) ae efine as R0 M n = 4 ρ ) n, 10) 0 so ha M 1 = M an in geneal M n MR n 1) 0. heefoe, he vacuum polaizaion in he exenal egion epens a he sub-ominan oe on he inenal sucue of he sa. In conas o his inenal sucue epenence, we poin ou ha he local appoximaion fo φ in saic spheically symmeical spaces peviously evelope [17], fo a massless fiel in he Schwazschil meic leas o φ ) loc = M G 48 3 MG ), 11) which, in he weak fiel appoximaion, goes as M G / 4 since we ae assuming MG in he exenal egion. A compaison beween Eq. 11) an Eq. 9) fo lage gives φ ) nonloc φ ξ 1 ) ) loc 6 MG, 1) an hence, excep in he confomal case ξ = 1/6, he nonlocal appoximaion is ominan. Moeove, since he nonlocal expession in Eq. 7) inceases when R 0 ousie he sa, he nonlocal expession is ominan eveywhee in he exenal egion. We have heefoe shown hough an easy objec, as φ, how he quanum effecs on a weak gaviaional fiel can inuce ominan nonlocal behavios, poviing a concepual iffeence wih pevious woks in he subjec. Ou nex sep is o use he ligh hown by his calculaion o obain an suy analogous esuls fo a moe complicae an impoan objec, he sess-enegy enso. III. NONLOCAL APPROXIMAION FOR µν A nonlocal fomal expession fo µν in he weak fiel limi, simila in chaace o ou expession fo φ in Eqs. 4)-5), has been foun in [11, 1]. In he weak fiel limi hey euce o H 1) µν = 4 µ ν R 4g µν R+OR ) H ) µν = µ ν R g µν R R µν +OR ). 14) he acion of he nonlocal opeao F ) = ln µ in Eq. 13) has been escibe in eail in seveal papes see fo example [11]). Fo ime epenen siuaions i involves an inegal in he pas null cone of x, an heefoe µν is nonlocal an causal. On he ohe han, fo ime inepenen siuaions, i can be shown ha F ) = F ) [18]. Fom Eq. 13), assuming a saic siuaion an pefoming he elevan inegaions, i is possible o eive a nonlocal expession analogous o 6), vali in he exenal egion whee he classical souce vanishes. Insie he sa, µν can be foun by aking eivaives of he finie expession fo φ Eq.5)) in he same fashion. As an example, he complee µ ν fo a sa of consan ensiy is, fo < R0, = Gρ 0 = Gρ 0 = Gρ 0 [ ξ 1 ) ] 1 3R R0 ) [ ξ 1 ) ] R0 [ ξ 1 ) ] R 0 R 0 ), 18)

IV. APPLICAIONS A. Enegy coniions Oneimpoanquesionoaskiswhehe µν calculaewihinsemiclassicalgaviysaisfiesheenegyconiions ono. I is well knownha quanum fiels ofen o no saisfy he enegyconiions [19], a leas no in he sameway as classical fiels o. his fac has aise consieable iscussion egaing is implicaions fo singulaiy heoems, black hole ynamics, exisence of macoscopic avesable womholes, ceaion of close ime-like cuves, ec [0]. In ohe wos, violaion of he enegy coniions imply ha he semiclassical Einsein equaions, wih µν as a souce, coul in pinciple ami soluions qualiaively iffeen fom classical soluions [1]. In his secion we will iscuss he valiiy of wo enegy coniions, he Null Enegy Coniion NEC) an he Aveage Null Enegy Coniion ANEC) [], fo he massless scala fiel µν foun in las secion. he iscussion will be esice o he exeio egion, since insie he sa all enegy coniions ae saisfie by he classical souce. hese coniions have been suie in Ref. [10] using he local appoximaion fo he Boulwae vacuum in he confomal case. he conclusion was ha neihe of hem hols in he exeio of a non-collapse sa. Howeve, since he nonlocal conibuion o µν ominaes in he weak fiel limi, i is necessay o evise he calculaion. he NEC saes ha µν K µ K ν 0 fo evey null veco K µ. Fo a saic spheically symmeic siuaion his coniion is equivalen o he following inequaliies, 0) o which we will efe as aial an angenial coniions especively. Using he seies expansions 17) we fin ha [ = G M n n+1) 1 n 1 ) ] + ξ 1 n+1) 1) n ) = G M n n+1) n+3 [ n+1) 360 ξ 1 ) ] 6. ) I is easilyseen ha he angenial coniion is violaefo any ξ, which is enougho ensuenec violaion. he aial coniion is also violae in he confomal case, bu i hols in he minimal coupling case. heefoe he possibiliy emains ha in his case he aveage of he NEC coniion ove a null geoesic may be posiive. We will show now ha his is no he case: he ANEC is also violae fo abiay ξ. he ANEC [] saes ha p µνk µ K ν 0 fo any null geoesic of angen veco K µ an affine paamee p. o pove ha he ANEC is also violae, we consie a null geoesic exenal o he sa wih impac paamee b > R 0, efine by he following funcions x µ p) p) = p p) = p +b p) = / ϕp) = acanp/b). 3)
6 he geoesic is aken o be a saigh line, o keep he analysis consisenly a fis oe. he inegaion of µν K µ K ν ove he whole ajecoy wih K µ = xµ p ) can be pefome using he seies expansion fo µν in Eq.17). he esul is 6 p µν K µ K ν = G 880b M n b) n n+1) 4nn+1) 3)Γn+)+Γn+4) Γn+3/)Γn+5/). 4) his quaniy is clealy negaive an inepenen of ξ. We conclue ha he ANEC is violae fo a massless scala fiel in he exeio of a nonelaivisic sa inepenenly boh of he coupling of he fiel an of he inenal sucue of he sa. B. Quanum coecions o he meic In his secion we shall solve he lineaize semiclassical Einsein equaions, which ake ino accoun he backeacion of he quanum fiel ove he spaceime meic. he esuls will be foun o agee wih hose obaine by [13] bu isagee wih hose foun elying on he local appoximaion fo µν [9]. Disegaing boh cosmological consan an highe-oe ems, he semiclassical Einsein equaions ea R µν 1 ) Rg µν = 8G µν cl) + µν. 5) We ake he souce em o be sepaae in a classical pa, he oinay ensiy of he sa, an a quanum pa, which is he µν we have calculae in he pevious secion. he gaviaional fiel is similaly sepaae in a classical em he backgoun spaceime) an a coecion ha is pouce by he quanum µν g µν = η µν +h cl) µν +h q) µν. 6) We expess he coecion o he gaviaional fiel in isoopic fom. In Caesian cooinaes h q) 00 = f), hq) 0i = 0, h q) ij = g)δ ij. 7) I is a simple mae o solve he equaions 5), lineaize in h µν, using he µν given by Eq. 15) as a souce. he esul is [ f) = G 4 ξ 1 ) ] R x) 3 x 6 45 x x 3 8) [ ξ ) ] g) = [ ξ ) 1 ]f). 9) Noe ha he coecion h q) µν is popoional o φ excep in he confomal case ξ = 1/6, in which φ vanishes bu h q) µν oes no). Eq. 8) is coec only ousie he sa, whee φ is given by Eq. 6). Insie he sa, h q) µν has he same popoionaliy wih he finie φ given in Eq. 5). In he exeio egion we can eplace Eq.8) by is mulipola expansion f) = G [ ξ 1 ) 6 45 ] M n. 30) n+1 Hee we see an explici epenence of he exenal meic wih he inenal sucue of he sa, which can be hough as a quanum violaion of Bikoff s heoem. his is possible because he space suouning he sa, alhough empy a he classical level, conains a quanum vacuum enegy given by µν.
7 As an example, he quanum coecion o he Schwazschil meic exenal o a sa of consan ensiy is peice by ou nonlocal appoximaion o be [ f) = ξ 1 ) ] MG [ R ] 0 5 +, 31) wih g) given by Eq. 9). he leaing em in Eqs. 30) an 31) fo R 0 is he quanum coecion o he Newonian poenial of a poin mass, since i conains no infomaion abou he inenal sucue. heefoe he complee Newonian poenial of a poin mass when he effec of a quanum massless scala fiel is aken ino accoun eas Φ) = MG 1 [ ξ 1 ) ] 6 45 MG 3. 3) his esul agees wih pevious ones [13]. I also has he same fom ha he long-isance quanum coecions o Φ ue o gavions, calculae in he low enegy limi of quanum gaviy [14]. By conas, he coecion o he Schwaszchil meic foun in [9] using he local appoximaion fo µν is g 00 ) = 1 MG M G +, 33) 604 which oes no agee wih pevious esuls. I is woh noing ha ou esul saisfies consisenly he pinciple of supeposiion; if he gaviaional fiel of he sa is calculae as a sum of infiniesimal conibuions of he fom given in Eq. 3), he esul akes us back o Eq. 8). In fac, Eq. 8) is coec even if hee is no spheical symmey, as can be seen by noing ha he 00 componen of he lineaize Einsein equaions eas in he Loenz gauge) h q) 00 = 16G 00 1 ) λ λ. 34) Using he expessions Eq. 16) fo µν, i follows immeiaely ha h q) 00 x) is given by Eq. 8) if he poin x is locae ousie he souces, i.e., if Rx) = 0). As an applicaion in a non-spheically symmeic siuaion, we ouline hee he calculaion of he long-isance quanum coecion o he Ke meic by consieing a oaing souce. he classical µν has now off-iagonal ems elae o he angula velociy of he sa, 0i x) = ρωcos sinϕˆx+cosϕŷ) i. his pouces a nonzeo H ) 0i which in un causes µν o have, ousie he sa, he following componens 0i = Gω 40 3 x ρx ) cos sinϕ ˆx+cosϕ ŷ) i x x 3, 35) in aiion o hose inclue in Eq. 16), which ae no moifie by he oaion. Inseing 0i in he semiclassical Einsein equaions, we fin ha he long-isance coecion o he off-iagonal ems of he Ke meic ae of he fom h 0i = G 10 5J ) i +O G JR0 ), 36) whee J is he oal angula momenum of he souce. Noe ha he infomaion abou inenal sucue is again conaine in he sub-ominan em, which always falls off wo powes of fase han he ominan one. Once again, simila esuls hol fo he gavion quanum coecions [3]. 6 7 V. CONCLUSIONS In his pape we compue φ an µν x) fo a massless quanum fiel wih abiay coupling o he cuvaue in he geomey of spheically symmeic Newonian sas. We obaine expessions fo boh quaniies as mulipola expansions, vali in he weak fiel limi, ha show explicily he nonlocal epenence of he quanum effecs.
