WOLFPACK AGGIES PIRATES (4-2) (3-16) (9-6) LEADING OFF UNCG heads to downtown Greensboro and NewBridge Bank Park Tuesday for its annual contest with crosstown rival North Carolina A&T. The Spartans and Aggies were supposed to play in the minor league park last season but the game was moved to the UNCG Baseball Stadium due to inclement weather. The last time the two teams played downtown, UNCG came away with a 10-4 victory thanks in large part to a grand slam by then redshirt sophomore Zac MacAneney. The Spartans are coming off a big home series win over Southern Conference preseason favorite Western Carolina. UNCG won the first game 17-2, dropped a 17-5 decision Saturday and clinched the set by a 7-4 score Sunday. The Aggies enter the contest with a 3-16 record and lost two of three in a conference series against Savannah State. With the series victory over Western Carolina, the Spartans improved to 9-12 overall. LAST MEETING Every batter in the UNCG lineup recorded a hit as the Spartans swept the season series from North Carolina A&T with a 13-8 victory at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The triumph was the seventh straight for the Blue and Gold over its crosstown rival and upped UNCG s advantage in the all-time series to A total of seven UNCG batters notched multi-hit efforts during the evening. The Spartans committed four errors in the game, three on Aggie stolen base attempts, while North Carolina A&T committed two defensive miscues. Redshirt junior Zac MacAneney and sophomore Jake Hall led the way with three hits apiece as MacAneney also chipped in with two RBI and Hall scored a team-high three runs. Junior L.J. Kalawaia extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a 2-for-3 performance while also crossing the plate twice. Additionally, junior Hunter King was 2-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior Brennen James picked up his first win and decision of the season, throwing 1.1 innings and allowing just one unearned run on one hit with no walks and two strikeouts. Justin Godette was charged with the loss for A&T and dropped to 0-4 on the year. He gave up nine runs (all earned) on 12 hits with two walks and no strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. 5 LAST TIME OUT GREENSBORO, N.C. Western Carolina entered the weekend as the preseason favorite in the Southern Conference, but it was the UNCG baseball team that won the SoCon opening series between the schools thanks to a 7-4 victory Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The bottom three batters in the Spartan lineup went 5-for-10 in the contest with a run scored a two RBI. Senior outfielder Tyler Long, freshman infielder Tripp Shelton and senior infielder Aaron Wright recorded two hits apiece while Wright added a run scored and three RBI. Senior infielder Hunter King chipped in with two runs scored. With a double to lead off the bottom of the first, senior outfielder Zac MacAneney extended his current hitting streak to 11 contests. Freshman RHP Michael Bates came up big with perhaps his best outing in his young career. He tossed 4.1 innings and gave up just one run on four hits with two strikeouts before turning things over the bullpen. Senior LHP Blair Betts was credited with the victory and improved to 1-1 after throwing 2.2 effective innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Brendan Nail, a Greensboro native, was saddled with the loss as he dropped to 1-2. He surrendered five runs on five hits in just 2.2 innings pitched with three walks and two strikeouts. Junior LHP Bryant Stafford picked up his first save in a UNCG uniform as he threw the final 1.1 innings and held Western Carolina scoreless. He struck out three, including the final two batters of the game, and walked just one. With a runner in scoring position and two away in the top of the first, Bates induced a lineout to short from Danny Bermudez to hold the Catamounts off of the board. The UNCG offense went to work quickly in the bottom of the frame as MacAneney muscled a double to the gap in center. He then stole third and King drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Junior infielder Collin Woody plated MacAneney with a sac fly before Wright clubbed his fourth home run of the season to left center to extend the Spartan lead to 3-0. After a double by senior outfielder Eric Kalbfleisch, sophomore catcher Jake Kusz drew a walk. Long then poked a ball in the hole between first and second for an infield single that scored Kalbfleisch and left the Blue and Gold with a 4-0 cushion after just an inning. Kusz added to the Spartan lead in the bottom of the third as he hit a sharp line drive single to left that plated junior Jake Hall from second after Hall had reached on a fielder s choice and advanced to second on a groundout. Western responded with its first run in the top of the fourth via a Jason Smith RBI double, but UNCG plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by King and Wright to give the Spartans a 7-1 advantage heading to the fifth. Western Carolina scored two runs in the top of the sixth off of three-straight doubles to pull within 7-3 before Betts induced a groundout and fanned Spencer Holcomb to limit the damage. Betts would bounce back with a inning in the top of the seventh to keep the Catamounts at bay. With UNCG leading the game by a 7-3 count in the top of the eighth, a throwing error allowed leadoff hitter Bermudez to reach second base. He would score on a RBI single by Reece Strong to make it a three-run contest. Stafford came on with two outs and runners at first and second and came up with a huge strikeout to get out of the inning. He would finish the job in the top of the ninth, setting Western down in order to seal the win. BITS AND PIECES UNCG handed Western Carolina just its third series loss in Southern Conference action in three seasons... The Blue and Gold is 7-2 when compiling double figures in the hit column... The Spartans are more than halfway to matching their home run total from last season (25), hitting 19 so far this campaign different players have a home run to their credit this season with Wright leading the way with four bombs... MacAneney has a current team-long 11-game hitting streak... In nine home games this season, the Spartans are 7-2 and are hitting.332 with a slugging mark of.586 and 14 home runs.... The Spartan pitching staff has struck out 10 or more batters in six games. I M HONORED MacAneney earned his first career Southern Conference Hitter of the Week award for games spanning March 2-8 after hitting.409 with a slugging percentage of and an on base mark of.480 in five games. He also tallied nine hits, eight RBI, seven runs scored, two doubles, a triple, three home runs, three walks and 22 total bases during the week. PRESEASON LAURELS Junior RHP Ryan Clark heads into the season with a great deal of expectation as the Southern Conference coaches named him the league s preseason Pitcher of the Year. He also earned first-team preseason all-conference honors and was a member of the SoCon All-Freshman Team in Senior outfielders MacAneney and Kalbfleisch also earned preseason first team recognition while senior infielder Hunter King garnered a spot on the second team. SPARTANS IN THE MLB DRAFT UNCG has had four players and one signee drafted in head coach Link Jarrett s two seasons at the helm of the program. Max Povse was the second-highest draftee in program history as he was selected in the third round (102nd overall) by the Atlanta Braves in the 2014 draft. Below is a look of all UNCG players drafted under Jarrett s watch. L, 8-3 ACTIVELY LEADING Entering last week, Clark sits as the active career Southern Conference leader in earned run average (3.29) opponent batting average (.242) and hits allowed per nine innings (8.18) while MacAneney is tied for second on the list in triples (4) and fourth in batting average (.316). COMPLETE EFFORTS Clark threw his first career complete game last season against eventual SoCon regular season champion Western Carolina. Unfortunately, the Spartans could not cash in on the effort as the Catamounts edged the Blue and Gold by a 5-4 score. The complete game was one of three for UNCG last season as departed righty Max Povse picked up a 4-1 triumph over Big Ten foe Minnesota in Myrtle Beach and threw eight innings in a tough 2-1 loss at Wofford in May. WHERE HOME RUNS GO TO DIE The Spartan pitching staff proved to be very stingy in giving up home runs last season as UNCG allowed just 16 long balls to its opponents - the lowest mark in the Southern Conference by a long shot. Moreover, the Blue and Gold surrendered just five home runs at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE Since the UNCG Baseball Stadium opened in 1999, the Spartans have recorded 13 winning seasons and own an overall record of in the facility. UNCG s best campaign at home occurred in 2003 when the Spartans notched a mark of Last year, the Blue and Gold produced a mark in the friendly confines. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE CONTINUED In the spring of 2014, a pair of incoming freshmen experienced tremendous success at the UNCG Baseball Stadium as Michael Bates and Shelton helped West Forsyth High School defeat Richmond County in the North Carolina 4A state championship series. Bates threw a complete game with six strikeouts in the Titans game one victory while Shelton smashed a three-run home run in the deciding game three. HOME STATE ADVANTAGE When looking at the 2015 UNCG baseball roster breakdown, it is evident that the program is committed to keeping North Carolina prep talent in the state. Of the 35 members of the squad, 24 hail from the Tar Heel State. That is nearly 70 percent SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE The UNCG baseball program will welcome 13 new student-athletes to campus beginning in the fall of 2015 as 10 high school seniors and three junior college players have declared their intent to play baseball for the Spartans. The signing class includes eight pitchers, three infielders and two outfielders, including six Perfect Game nationally-ranked recruits UNCG BASEBALL SIGNING CLASS Name Pos. B/T Ht. Wt.
