3 The quest for a second-straight trip to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament fi nals begins for the Lewis University men s basketball team on Friday (March 6) night, as the Flyers (16-11) travel to Evansville to square off with GLVC West Division champion Southern Indiana (25-5) at 6 p.m. (CST) in the Physical Activities Center. Reserved chairback seats are available for $12, bench seats are $10 and student tickets are $3. A GLVC Tournament pass is available for all seven games during the tournament for $40 (Chairback seats) and $30 (bench seats). Last Time Out: Lewis was unable to overcome a 28.0% (7-for-25) shooting performance in the fi rst half, as the Flyers were defeated by #10 Northern Kentucky at Regents Hall on February 28th. A Look At Southern Indiana: The Screaming Eagles had fi ve players score in double-fi gures, led by 18 points from junior guard Jamar Smith, to claim the GLVC win and GLVC West Division regular-season title over Rockhurst on Saturday (Feb. 28). The Series: Southern Indiana owns a advantage over the Flyers in their all-time series. In their last meeting, USI used an 11-5 run over the fi nal three minutes of the contest to secure the win over the Flyers in both teams GLVC opener on December 4, Last Time We Danced: The last time that Lewis and Southern Indiana met in the GLVC Tournament was in 2007, as the Screaming Eagles took home the win on March 1, Lewis sophomore Jason Genova posted a game-high 16 points for the Flyers, while USI s Geoff Van Winkle and Melvin Hall each scored 14 for the Screaming Eagles. Block Party: The next blocked shot by freshman center Marty Strus could set two new school records. Strus has tied the single-season school record for blocks with 48 swats, leading the Flyers to a school-record tying 108 blocks on the season. Knocking Em Down: In his last fi ve games, Strus is shooting 78.8% (26-for- 33) from the fi eld. Overall, the Hickory Hills, Ill., native is third in the GLVC with a 64.3% fi eld goal percentage. 5 Now in his third season, Scott Trost was named the ninth head coach in Lewis University men s basketball history in April In two seasons at Lewis, Trost has re-established the Flyers as one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers fi nished the season 20-11, reaching the 20-win plateau for just the 14th time in program history. Trost led Lewis to the GLVC Championship game and an NCAA Tournament berth for the fi rst time since Following the season, Trost was named the 2008 IBCA Coach of the Year. In his fi rst season at Lewis, Trost guided the Flyers to a respectable overall record which inlcuded a 10-9 mark in the GLVC. The Flyers qualifi ed for the GLVC tournament for the fi rst time since 2004, bowing out to top-seeded Southern Indiana in the fi rst round. Prio to arriving at Lewis, Trost enjoyed a highly successful tenure at Illinois Wesleyan, posting a (.732) overall record and a (.714) mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) during his fi ve seasons as the helm. The Titans captured three consecutive CCIW titles ( ) and made four successive NCAA Division III Championship tournament appearances ( ) under his guidance. The Titans were 25-7 and fi nished third in the nation, beating Amherst in the NCAA tournament consolation game after being edged by eventual national champion Virginia Wesleyan in the semifi nals. Trost led Illinois Wesleyan to the Division III round of 16 in 2003 and Trost was named CCIW Coach of the Year in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Division III Coach of the Year the past four seasons. He coached two CCIW Most Outstanding Players, Keelan Amelianovich (2004) and Adam Dauskas (2005). Trost owns 11 years of experience and a (.631) overall record as a head coach. He tallied a ledger in four seasons at CCIW member Elmhurst, including a 16-9 mark in his fi nal year ( ). The Bluejays 10-4 CCIW record that season was the program s best conference showing up to that point. Prior to becoming head coach, Trost served three years as an Elmhurst assistant under Jim Whitesell, whose departure to become Lewis head coach in 1992 cleared the way for Trost to take over the top job. In Trost s fi nal season as assistant coach, the Bluejays were best in program history at the time - and advanced to the second round in their fi rst NCAA Division III Championship tournament appearance. Trost left Elmhurst in 1996 to become an assistant coach at the University of Michigan, where he served four seasons in that capacity before being promoted to associate head coach for the campaign. The Wolverines won the 1997 National Invitation Tournament, and the 1998 squad captured the inaugural Big Ten Tournament crown and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship tournament. Trost began his coaching career as an Illinois Wesleyan graduate assistant in the season. He was an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Minnesota State-Mankato the next two seasons before joining Whitesell s Elmhurst staff in A native of Appleton, Minn., Trost earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education at the University of Minnesota-Morris in 1985 and a Master of Arts degree at Illinois State University in Trost s Head Coaching Career Ledger Team Record (pct.)
