3 ASSIGNMENT : QUADRATIC EQUATIONS Q.1 : At present Asha s age (in years ) is 2 more than the square of her daughter Nisha s age. When Nisha grows to her mother s present age, Asha s age would be one year less than 10 times the present age of Nisha. Find the present ages of both Asha and Nisha. Q.2: At t minutes past 2 p.m. the time needed by the minutes hand of a clock to show 3 p.m. was found to be 3 minutes less than minutes. Find t. Q.3: The perimeter of a right angled triangle is five times the length of its shortest side. The numerical value of the area of the triangle is 15 times the numerical value of the length of the shortest side. Find the lengths of the three sides of the triangle. Q.4: There are three consecutive positive integers such that the sum of the square of the first and the product of the other two is 154. Find the numbers. Q.5: In a flight of 600 km. an aircraft was slowed down due to bad weather. The average speed for the trip was decreased by 200 km/hr and the time of flight was increased by 30 minutes. Find the original duration of flight. Q.6: Find a natural number whose square diminished by 84 is equal to thrice of 8 more than the given number. Q.7: Rs.9000 were divided equally among a certain number of persons. Had there been 20 more persons, each would have got Rs. 160 less. Find the original number of persons. Q.8: If twice the area of a smaller square is subtracted from the area of larger square, the result is 14 cm². However, if twice the area of the larger square is added to three times the area of the smaller square, the result is 205 cm². Determine the sides of two squares. Q.9: Find the roots of the equations by the method of completing the square: (i) 4x² + 4bx ( a² - b²) = 0 (ii) a² x² 3abx + 2b² = 0. Q. 10: Solve the equations by factorization method: (i) x² + 3x ( a² + a 2) = 0 (ii) ( a + b)² x² - 4abx ( a b)² = 0. Q.11 : For what values of p the equation (1 + p)x² + 2(1+2p)x +(1+p) = 0 has coincident roots? Find the roots also. Q.12: The coefficient of x in the quadratic equation x² + bx + c = 0 was taken as 17 in place of 13, its roots were found to be -2 and -15. Find the roots of the original equation Q. 13: If the roots of the equation (a² + b²) x² 2 ( ac + bd) x + (c² + d²) = 0 are equal, prove that. Q.14: If x = -2 is a root of the equation 3x 2 +7x +p = 0, find the values of k so that the roots of the equation x 2 + k( 4x + k 1) + p = 0 are equal. Q.15: If the roots of the equation are real and unequal, prove that the equation ( ) has no real roots.
