Interviews will take place on the field along the first base line 15 minutes after the conclusion of the game. HEAD COACH T.J. BRUCE Head coach T.J. Bruce entered his first season at Nevada with a plan and with optimism, yet that same outlook wasn t reflected in the preseason Mountain West Coaches Poll as Nevada was predicted to finish sixth. Bruce, arriving to Nevada as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation, then coached the Wolf Pack to a second place finish on the MW standings and the first MW tournament finals appearance in program history, proving himself as the right man to lead the Wolf Pack. Bruce now enters his second season at Nevada after being hired on June 26, The former collegiate player arrived to Nevada after five seasons as an assistant coach at UCLA from Bruce led the Bruins to four postseason appearances in that span before leading Nevada to a deep run in the conference tournament in his first season as a head coach. We found a person of great character in T.J., who fits our community and is a great person and family man, Athletics Director Doug Knuth said. He has an outstanding baseball background and has an incredible recruiting reputation. Nevada posted a overall record in 2016 with a mark in MW play, taking a title fight into the last week of the season before finishing tied for second. Nevada s record in its final 24 games were a testament to Bruce s work with the team and vast im- provement, as the Pack posted a 20-4 record in that span. Bruce and the Pack capped the 2016 season by advancing to the MW tournament finals for the first time in program history. Nevada won a program-record four tournament games, which included a 25-6 rout of top-seeded Fresno State. Bruce guided three players to all-conference honors as sophomore TJ Friedl was named to the first team, while sophomore Jordan Pearce and junior Miles Mastrobuoni were named to the second team. Nevada also had three players selected in the 2016 MLB Draft with Mastrobuoni (14th round Tampa Bay Rays), Trenton Brooks (17th round Cleveland Indians) and Sam Held (29th round Washington Nationals). Additionally, Friedl was named to the ABCA/Rawlings West All-Region second team before being named to the final roster for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Friedl was one of 10 position players in the nation to make the USA collegiate team, joining the squad for international competition over the summer. Friedl batted.401 for Nevada in 2016, becoming the first player to eclipse.400 at Nevada since Despite losing nearly 80 percent of its at bats from last season, the Wolf Pack posted a stellar.319 batting average on the season, which ranked second in the conference and ninth out of 295 Division I teams. Bruce s defensive expertise also paid dividends as Nevada led the MW with a.977 fielding percentage, which set a new program record and ranked in the top 25 nationally. The Pack also posted a 5.07 team ERA, ranking third in the league. Nevada was the only team in the conference to rank in the top three in team batting, pitching and fielding. THE T.J. The the forecast of inclement weather the times for the series have been changed. Thursday and Friday s games are at 2 p.m. with Saturday s game time staying at 1 p.m. SJSU swept the three games series earlier this season in San Jose, Calif. All three games were one-run contests and two went extra innings. After the home series with the Spartans, Nevada travels to UC Davis for a single game on Tuesday. New Mexico, the 2016 MW Tournament Champions, received four first place votes and are on top in the poll with 34 points. Bruce is ranked as one of the top 10 recruiters in an article written by Aaron Fitt of D1Baseball.com. BRIDGMAN AND CHARPIE NAMED TO MW PRESEASON TEAM University of Nevada seniors Justin Bridgman and Trevor Charpie were named to the 2017 Mountain West preseason baseball team announced today. The Wolf Pack were picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll. Bridgman led all MW shortstops last season with a.351 batting average. The Reno native scored 51 runs, collected 14 doubles, a triple and drove in 37 appearing in 59 games his junior year. On the base paths he stole 13-of-16 bases and defensively fielded.971. After batting.520 with 13 hits, eight RBI, seven runs scored and five doubles in six tournament games he was named to the MW Tournament team. The right-handed Charpie went 5-4 with 3.74 ERA that ranked sixth in the MW last season. On the season he tossed two complete games with one being a one-hit 5-0 shutout at San Diego State that earned him MW Pitcher of the Week honors. 7 2017 UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA BASEBALL NOTES PERFECT RECOGNIZES SIX WOLF PACK FRESHMEN Perfect Game released its list of top 400 incoming freshmen in collegiate baseball and top freshmen by conference in the country. The Wolf Pack placed two in the top 400 and six in the top 20 of the Mountain West. Outfielder Otis Statum came in at 125 in the national rankings and third baseman Cole Henderson was number 321. Statum and Henderson were ranked as the top two freshmen in the Mountain West. Shortstop Jaylon McLaughlin gave the Pack a third player in the top 5 in the MW rankings as the Los Angeles native was fifth. Pitcher Riley Ohl checked in at number nine and infielder Tyler Flores was 12th. The sixth Wolf Pack player to appear in the MW rankings was pitcher Grant Ford from San Jose, Calif. Collegiate Baseball has ranked the University of Nevada baseball recruiting class of 2016 as the 35th best in college baseball. The class is the first full recruiting class for second-year head coach T.J. Bruce and his staff. Of the seven Mountain West members, Nevada it is the only school that appears in the top 40. Highlighting the list of recruits is draft selections Jaylon McLaughlin and Otis Statum.
