Under the Auspices of the Rose-Croix, Salutem Punctis Trianguli! Dear Fratres and Sorores, We open this issue of the Rosicrucian Forum with Grand Master Julie Scott s message entitled Symbolism, in which she discusses the important role that symbols play in our lives from the familiar, obvious symbols that we see every day to the more obscure symbols that we use in our esoteric work in order to communicate with the subconscious mind. This article provides fresh insight into how these symbols can be effective tools for facilitating personal transformation and learning. Our front cover features an intriguing engraving from the frontispiece of J.J. Becher s work, Oedipus Chimicus, published in For a complete explanation of this interesting illustration, please see Grand Master Peter Bindon s article beginning on page 7. Frater Bindon s outstanding series on Rosicrucian symbols delves back even further in the history of symbols with a second article, Suso s Horologium Sapientiae, 1334, beginning on page 9. An informative article, Rosicrucian Absent Treatments: How To Be of Silent Service To Others, beginning on page 12, offers readers some solid Rosicrucian instruction on the practical application of our Order s teachings. I take this opportunity to draw readers attention to two particular features in this issue: a special appeal and application for Colombes is found on page 11, and an open letter calling on all Rosicrucian scientists is published on page 17. And for readers interested in serving and nurturing our youth, please see the announcement on page 5, which explains how you can get involved in developing programs to serve the next generation of Rosicrucians. The coming fall season will be an especially busy time for Rosicrucians, with a number of exciting events offered throughout the jurisdiction. Please see pages for a listing of the many conventions, classes, celebrations, and Rosicrucian gatherings that are taking place in the next few months. We hope to see you at some of these events! Sincerely and fraternally, Robin M. Thompson, F.R.C. 3 Grand Master s Message Symbolism by Julie Scott, S.R.C. SYMBOLISM is an important aspect of the Rosicrucian tradition and can be an effective tool for facilitating personal transformation and learning. The word symbol comes from the Greek, symbolon, which was a token used for identification in ancient Greece. According to the Columbia University Press Dictionary, a symbol is a sign representing something that has an independent existence. Symbols are used in speech, writing, logic, arithmetic, science, music, computer programming, and practically every aspect of our lives. In esoteric work, we use symbols to communicate with our subconscious mind, and in turn, our subconscious mind uses symbols to communicate with our conscious mind, usually through dreams or flashes of intuition. As you read this message you are perceiving and interpreting symbols the letters and words on this page. Language is symbolic; the combinations of letters represent words, and the words represent meanings that we accept. If you combine the letters D and O and G, in that order, you create a symbol for a furry, four-legged animal with a tail, that we call a dog, but the word or symbol, dog, is not a dog. When conversing with someone, rather than saying that furry, four-legged animal with a tail that lives with me, you can expedite the understanding of your meaning by simply speaking the symbols my dog. Of course, the person with whom you are speaking must be familiar with the symbols you are referring to. If you present dog to someone who only speaks Japanese or Russian, the symbol dog does not represent a dog to him or her. According to the Rosicrucian teachings, symbols can be artificial or natural. They can be used to represent mundane or esoteric subjects; they can convey simple directions or abstract ideas. There are many examples of artificial symbols: a flag, a crown, a stop sign, a uniform, the multiplication sign used in arithmetic, musical notation, a city or country s seal, a sports team s insignia, or a company logo. Each of these symbols represents something that has an independent existence, whether it is a concept, person, place, or thing.

Page 2 ROSICRUCIAN FORUM The sun is an example of a natural symbol. The sun is often used to represent the power of God or the Cosmic. Pharaoh Akhnaton used this symbol to represent the one god that he believed existed beyond all manifestation. Akhnaton did not believe that the sun was God; he believed that it was the symbol powerful enough to represent the all-powerful, life-giving god, Aton. When Ahknaton was searching for the location for his new capital city, as he was sailing down the Nile, he noticed a natural shape in the mountains that looked like the hieroglyph for the word horizon (akhet). You can still see this shape in the hillside today. Akhnaton chose this site as the new capital of Egypt and built his Temple to Aton facing this place in the mountain, where every morning the sun (Aton) rose in the horizon (akhet.) He named this place Akhetaton, meaning Aton s Horizon or horizon of the Aton. The significance of this location and the meaning of the sun in Akhnaton s philosophy are acted out in every sunrise and in the hieroglyphic metaphor. Hieroglyph for Akhetaton Rosicrucian Symbols One of the most recognizable Rosicrucian symbols is the Rose Cross. Typically it is said to symbolize our spiritual growth during this incarnation the cross represents our body, and the rose, placed at the level of our heart, symbolizes our soul s unfolding or growth. Perhaps it means something else to you. It is important to listen to what your inner self tells you about the meaning of symbols. Secret Symbols of the Rosicrucians of the 16th and 17th Centuries is the principal book on Rosicrucian symbolism. We have been including in the Forum a series of interpretations of these symbols, and others from this time period, written by Grand Master Peter Bindon of Australia. Before reading Grand Master Bindon s explanation, I encourage you to consider the symbol first to see what meaning it may reveal to you. You may find it interesting to then compare the historic descriptions and interpretations presented by Grand Master Bindon with what you understood yourself. Archetypal Symbols Probably the most well known symbolist was the Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung. He wrote extensively on this subject and presented the concept of a collective

No. 3, 2005 Page 3 unconscious that manifests itself through archetypal symbols. He noticed in his psychiatric practice that many patients perceived similar or the same images in their dreams, in many cases even when they were unfamiliar with the symbol. Jung writes: My thesis, then, is as follows: In addition to our immediate consciousness, which is of a thoroughly personal nature... there exists a second psychic system of a collective, universal, and impersonal nature which is identical in all individuals. This collective unconscious does not develop individually, but is inherited. It consists of pre-existent forms, the archetypes, which can only become conscious secondarily and which give definite form to certain psychic contents. (Jung, 1981) Jung offered that these symbols are buried in our unconscious mind and cannot be known by direct experience, yet all humans understand them. Rosicrucian rituals include many archetypal symbols. For example, in Lodge and Chapter rituals, the Matre represents the loving presence of the mother in the temple, and in initiations the Conductor represents our guide and protector. Allegory In addition to the use of symbols to convey meanings that may be difficult to grasp, we also use allegory and metaphor. In literature, allegory is a symbolic story that serves as a disguised representation for meanings other than those indicated on the surface. (Columbia University, 2003) The most famous Rosicrucian allegory is the story of Christian Rosenkreuz. We are introduced to Christian in the first of the Rosicrucian manifestoes the Fama Fraternitatis, published in the early 1600s. In this publication, we learn of Christian s travels to Arabia, where he associated with magi who transmitted to him important knowledge. Then, after a brief sojourn in Egypt, he traveled to Fez, which had been an important intellectual center, especially related to alchemy. Christian s allegorical travels represent the advances which various esoteric sciences made when passing from East to West. (Rebisse, 2005) The alchemical flask of the royal wedding, from Pandora, 1582.

Page 4 ROSICRUCIAN FORUM They also represent the sources of the Rosicrucian tradition. In the third Rosicrucian manifesto, The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreuz, we are presented with an allegory describing the seven stages of the alchemical process and an initiatic narrative... of a person s quest on the way to the marriage with the soul. (Rebisse, 2005) Metaphor Metaphor means to carry over or beyond or a transfer of meaning from one thing to another. Metaphor is a figure of speech by which a thing is spoken of as being that which it only resembles. (metaphor.org, 2005) A clear example of this is William Shakespeare s metaphor from As You Like It: All the world s a stage, And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first the infant. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for the cycles of life as well as possibly pointing toward reincarnation. A familiar metaphor in the Western esoteric tradition is alchemy, representing personal transformation. Alchemy is not just a process of turning one metal into another, lead into gold, in a secret laboratory, but is a metaphor for the transformation of consciousness from lower frequencies to higher frequencies. The use of symbols, allegory, and metaphor are important aspects of the Rosicrucian tradition, and can be effective tools for facilitating personal transformation and learning. We can expand our understanding by opening ourselves to their meanings. Create Your Own Symbol I invite you now to create a symbol that has meaning for you connected with your spiritual ideal. What symbol can represent this for you? Perhaps it is a valiant knight in shining armor, or a well-rooted tree swaying in the wind, or a nurturing mother figure. Draw a symbol of your ideal. Then spend some time with this image every day for the next few weeks. Place this symbol in your sanctum or in a discreet place in your office or home. Open yourself to the messages you may receive from your subconscious mind related to this symbol. See if you find that you move closer to your ideal once you have created this symbol. So Mote It Be!

Page 6 Alchemical and Hermetic Symbols Series Continues ROSICRUCIAN FORUM MANY and varied are the Alchemical and Hermetic symbols that make up the rich Rosicrucian tradition originating in Renaissance Europe. As Rosicrucians we often see these symbols, but may puzzle over their meaning and significance. A few years ago Frater Peter Bindon, Grand Master of the English Grand Lodge for Australia, Asia, and New Zealand, wrote a series of articles on some of these old and intriguing symbols for that Grand Lodge s Rosicrucian Forum magazine. In each of his articles Frater Bindon explained a little about the creator of the symbol, what was happening to that person at that time in their life, and gave an interpretation of the particular symbol. Eventually the Australian Grand Lodge published this series of fifteen articles in a booklet entitled The Secret Rosicrucian Tradition As Revealed Through the Alchemical and Hermetic Symbols of the 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries. In an ongoing series, we have been publishing these articles and featuring some of the arcane symbols on our magazine s cover. In the seventeenth century, Germany was an important center of Rosicrucian thought and a place where new ideas and ways of thinking were being developed, both in metaphysics and theology. A growing interest in mysticism had been ongoing for several centuries throughout the region, tracing its roots all the way back to the incomparable Meister Eckhart ( ), and even farther back to medieval German ideas about nature and alchemy. In this issue Frater Bindon presents two examples of German symbolic artwork of interest to Rosicrucians one from the 17th century and the other from the 14th century. The 17th century is represented by our cover artwork from the frontispiece of Johann Joachim Becher s Oedipus Chimicus, published in Amsterdam in Becher, a metallurgical chemist with controversial but fascinating ideas, created a form of alchemy that fathered the phlogiston theory. And although this theory was later disproved by Lavoisier, nevertheless Becher had started the progression of ideas that led to modern thermodynamics. The 14th century symbolic art discussed by Frater Bindon belongs to Henry Suso, the German mystic and student of Meister Eckhart who entered the Dominican Order as a teenager, and because of his steadfast devotion, went on to draw many followers to his mystic philosophy in the fertile fields of Germany and elsewhere.

No. 3, 2005 Page 7 Becher s Oedipus Chimicus, 1664 IN THE ENGRAVING that serves as the frontispiece for Johann Joachim Becher s book Oedipus Chimicus, the sphinx takes the form of an owl with a human head (see front cover of this issue). Oedipus, of course, unwittingly and tragically solved the riddle of the sphinx and thus won his mother s hand in marriage. She hanged herself and he tore out his eyes in horror. Perhaps Becher had some ghastly pun in mind naming his exposé of chemistry as he did, but nevertheless, the illustration contains some interesting symbology not related directly to the ghastly story of Oedipus. In the illustration, overseen by winged Mercury, the chemist works at his furnace refining or distilling the essential elements of the Philosopher s Stone. A few jars and pieces of chemical apparatus are scattered about the workshop, along with some chemical symbols, to give the impression of the industry that alchemical transformation involves. However, this simple illustration has more to do with inner transformation than with the chemical operations that we might expect to learn about in the alchemist s laboratory. The bellows represent the element of air and thus life, especially spiritual life. Cinderella, you probably recall, had the task of tending the fire and using bellows to keep alive the flame. Despite the lowly occupation allotted to her, she in fact represents the Holy Spirit of Christianity dwelling unseen among the ashes of the hearth. In ancient times the fire of the household was never allowed to become extinguished, and this characteristic has been equated with the soul, which Rosicrucians believe is never completely extinguished even in death. In fact, in religious terms, the soul is part of Divinity and thus indestructible, having no beginning and no end. By patient tending, the spark of Cosmic Intelligence residing in the soul can be fanned into a strong flame of spirituality. As I have pointed out, some religions see this as an aspect of the Holy Spirit. There is more to the story of Cinderella than one might think, and just what is symbolized by the glass slipper? To return to our illustration, the philosopher is there to solve for us all the riddles of alchemy, which it must be admitted can be rather obscure. It is Mercury

Page 8 ROSICRUCIAN FORUM who carries the knowledge of the alchemist outside to where the sphinx waits with seemingly endless riddles. As each of the riddles is unerringly answered by Mercury, the sphinx despairs and flings herself from the cliff top. Unfortunately, her wings are inadequate and she plunges to her death. Surprisingly, the sphinx in this schema is symbolic of debauchery and depravity, so the departure of these unbalancing traits into the abyss is probably fortuitous. It has been the case that because the sphinx ate those who could not answer correctly the riddles she posed, that the sphinx symbolized something from which there was no escape. However, we see in this illustration the symbolic conquest of knowledge and understanding over the gross and carnal side of humanity. Thus, the aspect of self that may generate mental anguish can be overcome by the power of the will and of reason. The classic riddle of the sphinx was: What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three in the evening? The usual answer is humanity who is seen crawling, walking, and using a cane in the relevant stages of life, and these stages are seen as one day in the riddle. However, an examination of the Baroque alchemists for example Michael Maier s Atalanta Fugiens shows that he thought that the answer was the Lapis or Philosopher s Stone. This was because in its characteristics it is four sided a white lunar stone composed of two curved lines and finally a triangle of body, spirit, and soul. It is not a simple matter, remote as we are from the seventeenth century alchemists, to see allegories as they understood them. The best that we can often do is to take their writings and make detailed comparisons with those of other writers looking for clues that will help us unravel the diagrams. Despite this difficulty, there remain some inspiring lessons and meditative opportunities in the alchemical literature. While looking at these diagrams and contemplating the messages that they contain for us, it is instructive to remember that we are following in the footsteps of Rosicrucians who have done this down through the centuries. I hope that you continue to find some meaning for today in these short commentaries on some of the early mystical and spiritual writings of our Rosicrucian tradition. 11 No. 3, 2005 Page 9 Suso s Horologium Sapientiae, 1334 THE EARLY SEVENTEENTH CENTURY saw the formal establishment of Rosicrucianism. At that time the focus of the Rosicrucians was on spiritual reformation. New ideas were emerging in religion (Martin Luther had proposed some colossal changes), philosophy, and the sciences based on principles extracted from mysticism, alchemy, and Hermetic philosophy. Germany was the principal center where much of the new thought was developed, although other places in Europe also hosted individuals who contributed to the growth of new attitudes toward mysticism. Written records concerning this movement are more common in Germany, mostly because of the traditions of some of its philosophers who were well versed in the above-mentioned arts and sciences. These studies collectively made up a body of knowledge referred to as gnosis. The medieval Johann Eckhart (known as the Master or Meister ), who lived between about 1260 and 1328, was one of the great German mystics whose uplifting sermons are available in English. Among his followers was Henry Suso (Heinrich Seuse), who lived from 1295 to 1366, and was also an inspiring author. The accompanying illustration is one of a number of woodcuts illustrating his book, Das Buch Gennant Seuse, which was translated into Latin in 1334 and published as Horologium Sapientiae. (Editor s note: the word Horologium can be translated as Clock, while Sapientiae translates as Wisdom. ) The book is a collection of three earlier works: The Book of Eternal Wisdom, The Book of Truth, and Suso s autobiographical Life of the Servant. While Suso was studying in Cologne, he was taught by Eckhart, well known even during his life as a celebrated mystic. No doubt, it was from him that Suso gathered many of the mystical principles that guided the rest of his life and writings. Suso was probably very aware of the dangers of being too unorthodox in his mystical outlook, knowing that Eckhart had been summoned before a panel to either accept or reject certain religious teachings ascribed to him that were considered heretical. Some scholars believe that Suso may have assisted Eckhart in formulating his answers to the inquisitors. Suso had entered the Dominican Order when he was just thirteen, and five years later decided to change his life. Becoming much more mystical in his outlook, he dedicated himself as a Servant of

Page 10 ROSICRUCIAN FORUM the Eternal Wisdom, which was for him the Divine Essence and more substantially, the Eternal Wisdom incarnated as man Jesus the Christ although Suso did not articulate it in this way. He began to have numerous visions and ecstatic experiences while a burning love for the Eternal Wisdom dominated his thoughts and controlled his actions. Platonism heavily influenced Suso s philosophy. He held that humans could achieve a spiritual rebirth through intuitive knowledge that would reveal the methods one must use to heal the original union that existed between one s soul and the Cosmic. This idea was widespread at that time, and there was no book more popular in religious communities practicing meditation. Suso is reputed to have established an organization known as The Brotherhood of Eternal Wisdom, because one of the chapters in Horologium Sapientiae concerns itself with the Rule of the Brotherhood who followed an ascetic path of meditation, contemplation, and prayer. There is some debate about this idea, but it is known that he spent a considerable amount of time in a number of religious communities where his appealing personality and exemplary life drew many followers to his philosophy. Scholars believe that Suso was the first person to introduce the red rose as a symbol of Christ s passion. The illustration shown here shows Christ crucified on a living rose bush covered in blooms. But the rose is clearly meant to be more than simply symbolic of Christ s passion. At the foot of the cross, Suso, clothed in his Dominican garb, bares his breast to reveal that a rose has replaced his heart, showing that he has united his soul with the Eternal Wisdom of the Cosmic. The rose is symbolic of this achievement and, being in full bloom, indicates that his soul personality has developed fully to a stage close to mystical perfection. This symbol is still used by Rosicrucians to signify this aspect of personal enlightenment. Near Suso stands an angel who offers the rose to those who wish to follow Suso and seek to become one with Eternal Wisdom themselves. Above the earthly plane and in partial ascension to heaven, the youthful Christ plucks a rose from the bush. This action is symbolic of Christ s acceptance of union with Eternal Wisdom himself, thus explaining the enlightenment that permitted him to dominate the debates with Jewish elders in the temple during his mystical initiation. Finally, the halo, the symbol of enlightenment that surrounds Suso, is in the form of a wreath of roses (in contrast to that surrounding Christ s head, which is more conventional), indicating that the way to enlightenment is through the path of the rose. The Rosicrucian Order, AMORC, still emphasizes the importance of correctly interpreting the impressions that we receive intuitively. Meditation and contemplation play a significant role in our daily lives too, and it is through these that we reach a state of enlightenment.

COLOMBES REPRESENTING DIVINE LIGHT IN OUR SACRED TEMPLES Colombes serve as the guardians of the sacred flame, a duty that has been performed throughout the ages, in our temples and the temples of our ancestors. In ritual, Colombes represent the Divine Light in our Sacred Temples, a presence that symbolizes our aspirations and inspires us towards Illumination. Through serving, Colombes are introduced to Rosicrucian principles and ideals, and they are encouraged to discover the Divine Light within themselves and to honor their responsibilities. Girls 10 through 16 years of age who are daughters of Rosicrucians, or sponsored by Rosicrucians with the approval of their parents, are invited to apply to become Colombes and serve in the convocations of the Lodges and Chapters of our jurisdiction. Girls who are 9 years of age may apply to become Colombes-in- Waiting, preparing for installation after their tenth birthday. Rosicrucian parents, grandparents, or members who would like to sponsor a Colombe are encouraged to discuss this service with eligible candidates. If you have further questions, or would like an application for Colombe Service, please contact your local Lodge or Chapter, or the Grand Lodge Affiliated Bodies Office by at localgroups@rosicrucian.org or by telephone at (408) Or you may mail the following request form to: Colombe Applications, Affiliated Bodies Office, Rosicrucian Order, AMORC, 1342 Naglee Ave., San Jose, CA Name AMORC key # Address City/State/ZIP Country Telephone Address

Page 12 ROSICRUCIAN FORUM Rosicrucian Absent Treatments How To Be of Silent Service To Others I want to develop my ability to conduct remote treatments. Are there any additional guidelines the Forum can offer to help? Telepathy is the communication from one mind to another through the means of thought transference. In consideration of this activity for therapeutics, most Rosicrucian students use the phrase absent healing. If a member does employ that term, however, he or she should be absolutely clear as to what is being promised to another. To explain, the word heal means to cure, to restore to health, wholeness, that the vital functions of a patient will return to normalcy and near-perfection. Unless a mystical student has the inner attainment of a greatly enlightened being, it is best not to vow that you are about to enact a cure. The preferred thought in the consciousness of the student would be that one is going to assist the patient in his or her own ongoing process of regaining health. In addition, it is naturally assumed that the patient is also striving, if at all possible, through various means in life to regain that cherished state of harmony. The Rosicrucian Order, AMORC, is not a healing institution. We do train and prepare sincere students to eventually master themselves, to acquire knowledge of and enact the higher laws of nature and the Cosmic in order to aid humanity in a number of ways. One of those ways is the application of healing treatments through the direct laying on of hands, and by remote means. From a historical perspective, an offshoot of the venerable Mystery Schools of ancient Egypt was the Therapeutae organization. They did in fact reportedly focus largely on the healing arts, in addition to their daily practice of mysticism, to achieve an ascension of consciousness. They were allied with and contemporaries of the Essenes. The Essenes, incidentally, dwelt in the area of Palestine, and nurtured and supported the great Joseph, who later attained the mystic pinnacle known as Christ Consciousness. In any event, the philosopher and theologian Philo of Alexandria reported that the Therapeutae were... ascetics of both sexes who dwelt near ancient Alexandria, Egypt, and who were devoted to contemplation and meditation. Nevertheless, having some idea in mind as to the great legacy of our mystical treatments, knowing as we do that it is not just another contemporary fad here today, gone tomorrow and realizing that we as mystical practitioners are merely the humble channels through which the Cosmic works, not gods and goddesses

No. 3, 2005 Page 13 dispensing cures, what are some important guidelines to observe when conducting treatments by way of thought transmission? The first step is sacred attunement. It has become somewhat commonplace among some mystical students, and even those who do not study mysticism, to tell another: I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. There is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping another in one s thoughts and prayers, but Rosicrucian students who study the deeper laws of the Cosmic will know that simple wishes or superficial desires on behalf of another are not really enough in this work. Because absent treatments seem to be easily done, the untrained advocate may think that procedures and methods are unnecessary. The truth is greatly experienced workers on behalf of others carry out their silent tasks following systematic and fundamental laws of nature, in a manner that has, to them, become second nature. Primarily, an individual who gives absent treatments should be animated overwhelmingly by Divine Love and kindness for humanity. Such service is accomplished without thought of material reward, without seeking a personality or cult-like following, and most often done in absolute anonymity. Even in the affiliated bodies of AMORC, we may have special committees for metaphysical treatments, but the individual members then retire to their respective homes and carry out the great work without fanfare. Unless one is truly motivated by an unselfish, deep desire to help and casts out of mind all lower burning emotions such as hatred, antagonism, and jealousy, one cannot hope to be perfectly attuned with the Cosmic in order to transmit healing treatments. For example, let us say a member of a Lodge s healing committee is given the name of a person who he or she knows very well. Let us further surmise that the committee member is well aware of the problem faced by the patient and how that problem arose in the first place. The challenge now for the committee member is to dismiss all judgmental thoughts, angry accusations, and personal opinions. He or she must allow the greater Light to be directed through self as a pure conduit, uncontaminated by negativity. As indicated earlier, such an altruistic attitude must become automatic for the committee member in preparation for transmission of energy. The perfect preparation for remote treatments is the special over-all exercise. The dynamic radiation of sacred force through the strong direction of mind to all parts of the body no doubt brings the student into much higher attunement with their Master Within. This harmonization, this blending of our material mind with the Cosmic is in fact a foundation stone of mystical preparation for almost

Page 14 ROSICRUCIAN FORUM all Rosicrucian special work. Of course, we understand completely that it is not always possible to accomplish this exercise, especially if one s assistance is needed at a moment s notice. But it is well to know what the ideal preparation is and to strive toward it whenever possible. The next step in preparation for sending absent treatments involves the dual factors of concentration and visualization. We will briefly address each of these categories before moving on to the actual sending of energy. Concentration is yet another major tool of mystical activity. To focus the wandering mind, to center and pinpoint one s thoughts to the heart of what is being done, is essential. The student should cultivate the habit of collecting the thoughts and reject the tendency of many to be frivolous of thought, erratic, unstable to the point where their thoughts are mostly weak and scattered about. To concentrate, in fact, means to reject the extraneous and become more pure and potent in force. One s ability to concentrate will improve with the regular practice of AMORC s experiments. As for visualization, this has very often been discussed at great length throughout our lessons and in special discourses. We will, however, highlight an area of visualization that perhaps has not been greatly examined through the years. This has to do with the factor of those mystics who happen to be sight-impaired. We will then move on to one or two other key points of visualization relative to absent treatments. One of the hallmarks of correct visualization is to see in the mind s eye a clear picture of what it is you want to accomplish. If one is incapable of seeing, due to a physical condition such as blindness, or even if one is sighted but still cannot bring a picture into consciousness, we then suggest the student utilize as many of the other four senses as possible as reinforcements. For example, focus on the sound of another s voice, or the feel of their presence, or even the agreeable smell of someone s home. Engaging oneself fully in these other senses will add to and make more powerful that absent treatment about to be transmitted. The vital aspect of utilizing as many facets of one s psychic self in this wonderfully positive endeavor is that the student tends to unconsciously dismiss all of the annoying distractions from mind. It is as if the student is gradually encircled in Cosmic Light, especially after completing the over-all exercise, and eventually nothing exists outside of that sphere of power. Moreover, the picture is... slowly and carefully being attuned with the Cosmic, ready for release into the universal Intelligence. This is the complete and crucial preliminary phase of attunement. Next, let the picture go forth to do its beneficial work through Cosmic Law. This is accomplished or triggered by the simple technique of filling the lungs with

No. 3, 2005 Page 15 air, take a deep breath through the nose, hold it for about ten seconds while the student sees, feels, hears, smells, as clear an impression as possible. Then slowly exhale, saying mentally while exhaling: Into the Cosmic I release this impression. It is done! Let it be released, much the same as when we place a letter inside a mailbox, or send an , or leave a verbal message on a telephone answering device. It is released. We have no doubt about it. In absent treatments, what are we releasing? Forget not that the student is merely the channel through which the enormous Light of cosmic energy may be condensed and then sent forth. During psychic (or astral) projection work, the psychic body radiates principally from the solar plexus. Therefore, as an additional aid to the visualization/release process, think of this bright luminescence radiating from the solar plexus. The Light does not leave the body, but radiates from it, much the same as a light beam emanates from a flashlight until we switch it off. When the student is sending an absent treatment to one individual, think of that particular person just before releasing the force. If there is a situation of two or more individuals to be treated, think of each one, if possible, then mentally combine them as best one can just before release. This is why the Council of Solace and local metaphysical aid committees need the name of the person or persons. At least it is something to use as a focal point. Beyond that, be confident that Cosmic Mind will direct the energy as needed. Surround the person or persons with Cosmic Light, bathe them in it, and allow that Light to begin proper therapeutic treatment, free of the student s preconceptions and erroneous judgments. Then, release it, and go about other tasks knowing that Cosmic Law will be fulfilled. We have discussed Rosicrucian absent treatments almost exclusively with regard to ill health. However, we must remind the students that this remote psychic activity can and should be utilized with equal vigor and purity for those who perhaps suffer the devastating loss of a loved one and need to be surrounded by divine understanding; for those who are highly stressed due to financial, emotional, business, or social hardships, adversities, trials, and tribulations. It is a wonderful way to be of silent service to others. We conclude by returning to our first step of mystical preparation: attunement. Francis Barrett, professor of chemistry, philosopher, and Rosicrucian of the 1800s offered this good advice to students: The preparation for this work is simply this: Learn to cast away from thee all vile affections Let all thy dealings be free from deceit and hypocrisy Be not hasty to condemn the actions of others... Study day and night, and supplicate the Creator that the pure spirits may have communication with, and influence in thee. E

Page 16 ROSICRUCIAN FORUM Rosicrucian Utopia From the Positio Fraternitatis Rosae Crucis God of all beings, God of all life, In the humanity we are dreaming of: Politicians are profoundly humanitarian and strive to serve the common good; Economists manage state finances with discernment and in the interest of all; Scientists are spiritualistic and seek their inspiration in the Book of Nature; Artists are inspired and express the beauty and purity of the Divine Plan in their works; Physicians are motivated by love for their fellow-beings and treat both the soul and the body; Misery and poverty have vanished, for everyone has what he or she needs to live happily; Work is not regarded as a chore, but as a source of growth and well-being; Nature is considered to be the most beautiful temple of all, and animals are considered to be our brothers and sisters on the path of evolution; A World Government composed of the leaders of all nations, working in the interest of humanity, has come into existence; Spirituality is an ideal and a way of life that springs forth from a Universal Religion, founded more upon the knowledge of divine laws than upon the belief in God; Human relations are founded upon love, friendship, and fraternity, so that the whole world lives in peace and harmony. So Mote It Be! Point Number 16 Be and remain a free thinker. Think for yourself and not according to what other people think. Likewise, let everyone think freely; do not impose your ideas on others and always remember that your ideas are also evolving.

Calling All Scientists! Under the Auspices of the Rose-Croix, Salutem Punctis Trianguli! Rosicrucian Park 1342 Naglee Avenue San Jose, CA USA FAX Dear Fratres and Sorores, Recent advances in areas such as quantum mechanics, genome research, energy medicine, and consciousness research show promise for providing scientific validation to various age-old teachings of our Order. Accordingly, the English Language Grand Lodge for the Americas is interested in starting research projects that can build on other ongoing next-generation scientific research and on past research activities of the Order, with particular focus on establishing this validation. In doing this, we will face the additional challenge of evolving the scientific method itself to encompass subjective experiences and reality, subtle energies, and consciousness all of which are inherent in our teachings. As modern science has already taught us, it is no longer always possible to consider the observer and the observed as completely separate as was seemingly possible in classical science. A framework that recognizes the interconnectedness of the observer and the observed is one of the next frontiers. We are presently identifying possible research topics, after which we will be starting selected research projects. If, in addition to being a frater or soror, you are a credentialed scientist, engineer, or other researcher, and are interested in contributing to this effort on a volunteer basis, please contact programs@rosicrucian.org or write to Programs Dept., Rosicrucian Order, AMORC, 1342 Naglee Avenue, San Jose, CA 95191, U.S.A. Researchers will also be encouraged to publish their results in the online Rose+Croix Journal ( which will provide authors with international and transdisciplinary exposure, and in other appropriate Rosicrucian publications. With all good wishes for Peace Profound, Dave Stein, F.R.C. Assistant Editor-in-Chief Rose+Croix Journal

October 6-9, North Atlantic Regional Convention at Rye Town Hilton, Rye Brook, NY Our Imperator Christian Bernard and Grand Master Julie Scott will be our special guests. Program Presenters will include Dr. Lonnie Edwards and Frater Edward Lee The experience of the Greater Light is the goal of the mystical journey. When the seeker, in the course of spiritual evolution, becomes awakened to the presence of the Master Within, an invisible threshold is crossed. An initiation has taken place and perhaps, without our even knowing, the magnificent Journey Within has begun! A small light, as a candle in the darkness lights the way it hints at the Greater Light and impels us to take our first steps on the Path. We learn to guard that light and to remain attentive to the voice of the Master guiding us, urging us onward. We become infused with the desire to develop those virtues that will enable us to become worthy of that Greater Light. We are declared! Now we are walking in the Paths of the Masters! We will gather to attune with the God of our Hearts and of our own Highest Consciousness the Source of Light for us all. May our Paths be thereby illumined! So Mote It Be! Thursday, October 6: Full Day of Martinist Activities Friday, Saturday & Sunday, October 7-9: Open to all AMORC Members Lectures Classes Exercises Convocation And Much More Banquet with Entertainment Whether you are a Neophyte, new to the Order, or a longtime member, join us for an inspiring, enlightening experience. Don t give up... There is a convenient solution! Falling behind with your monographs shouldn t bother you too much, because it happens to almost everyone at one time or another. The teachings are presented in what appears at first to be a rather slow, leisurely pace, and up to a point that is the case. But the exercises and new concepts that need to be absorbed, internalized, and mastered can mount up to the point that some feel they can no longer keep up. Don t give up at this stage just because the load seems so great; there is an easy alternative. Simply contact Grand Lodge and ask for your monograph mailings to be put on hold. Provided that your membership remains current, you will continue receiving your Rosicrucian Digest and all other mailings due to you, such as the Rosicrucian Forum, Grand Lodge Bulletin, and the TMO monographs (if you are a member of the TMO). However, you will receive no more monographs until you are ready to receive them again. Then, when you feel you have caught up and wish to continue receiving monographs, simply contact Grand Lodge and ask for monograph mailings to resume.
