2 WELCOME The primary aim of the 11th IWSMRR is to present and discuss the latest research and results on Seismic Microzoning and Risk Reduction, and related topics in urban areas. This workshop will provide an opportunity to highlight cutting-edge developments and identify emerging areas of application in this field. Scientists, engineers, disaster mitigation planners, decision makers as well as representatives of the private sector are warmly invited to participate and contribute to the scientific sessions and discussions. 4 SCOPE OF WORKSHOP Lessons learned from recent earthquakes reveal a continuing need to assess and reduce seismic risk, especially in the populated areas. On the one hand a reliable and low-cost assessment of seismic hazard, earthquake hazards, vulnerability, and damage aimed at reducing risk and worldwide applicable is needed. On the other hand, a better assessment of seismic risk and knowledge oriented application is achieved when there is greater cooperation between the earthquake engineers, engineering seismologists and civil protection managers. The primary aim of the 11th IWSMRR is to present and discuss the latest research and results on Seismic Microzoning and Risk Reduction, and related topics in urban areas. This Workshop is focused on the following possible main topics: Velocity structure and local seismic hazard characterization. Innovation in ambient vibration survey and their applications. Strong ground motion and checking site response estimates. Near-fault ground motion factor. Vulnerability evaluation of buildings. Earthquake and tsunami scenarios and risk management. Recent disaster experiences due to big earthquakes Earthquake and tsunami disasters reduction. Seismic risk management and Earthquake emergency planning The workshop aims to bring together specialists (researchers and practitioners) from these fields to meet and share ideas, results, and practical experiences about new methods and pragmatic tools to assess, mitigate, and respond to earthquakes at urban scale. This workshop will provide an opportunity to highlight cutting-edge developments and identify emerging areas of application in this field. Scientists, engineers, disaster mitigation planners, decision makers as well as representatives of the private sector are warmly invited to participate and contribute to the scientific sessions and discussions, and other social events scheduled to take place in 11th WSMRR. PhD students and post-doc researchers are especially welcome. 4

6 GRANADA VENUE The workshop will be held in close proximity to the center of Granada city, one of the most interesting cities in Andalusia region (Southeastern Spain). Granada is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at the confluence of four rivers. It sits at an average elevation of 738 metres above sea level, yet is only one hour by car from the Mediterranean coast, the Costa Tropical and nearby is the Sierra Nevada Ski Station. Its nearest airport is Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport. The gastronomy, craftwork and urban planning are influenced by its glorious past. Fountains, viewpoints and Cármenes, houses surrounded by typical gardens of this city, create unforgettable corners in the city. It is no surprise that one of its old neighbourhoods, the Albaicín, has been awarded the World Heritage designation, together with the Alhambra and Generalife palaces. Granada is internationally revered for its lavish Alhambra palace. The Alhambra is a beautiful complex of buildings and gardens. Its leafy tree-lined walkways provide pleasant shade and coolness, enhanced by the abundance of water that flows in its streams. It is certainly Granada s most emblematic monument and one of the most visited in Spain. 6

7 GRANADA VENUE Granada was an important cultural centre for many centuries and nowadays it boasts a broad cultural and leisure programme. Film, music or theatre festivals are complemented with permanent or travelling exhibitions on all fields of knowledge. Finally, free tapas. Cynics claim there is no such thing as a free lunch, but the tapas bars of Granada beg to differ. Thanks, in part, to an above-average quota of about 80,000 students, the city is one of the last bastions of a noble practice that was once widespread in Spain.
