1 International Workshop on Fermi Surface and Lattice Effects in Cuprate High Temperature Superconductors - Emerging Electronic Landscape and Unconventional Lattice Effects- October 31st, 2003, D821-2, 8 th Fl., AIST Central 2 National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Tsukuba, Japan, Organizer: Hiroyuki Oyanagi, h.oyanagi@aist.go.jp, Photonics Research Institute, AIST

2 Scope Inspite of vigorous efforts searching for the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity (HTSC) over the past years, many puzzling problems still remain to be answered. Obviously, we need to reconcile contradictions by improving our approach. Indeed, most of the proposed mechanisms based on a strong electron correlation have completely neglected lattice effects 1. Recently, however, evidence for strong coupling between quasiparticle and phonons was revealed by angle-resolved photoemission studies, implying that most of the HTSC models should be reexamined. In the present workshop, we will review our present knowledge on Fermi surface and lattice effects in cuprate superconductors. Our goal is to understand unconventional electron states properly takinglattice effects into account, through interactive discussions among experts in related theories and experiments. History tells us that innovations often start from a minority view. 1 Lattice effects in High Tc Superconductors, SantaFe, 1992; Stripes and High Tc Superconductivity, Rome,1998, 2000, 2002, Physics in Local Lattice Distortions, Tsukuba, 2000; Local and Nanoscale Structures in Complex Systems, SantaFe, 2002; Dynamic Inhomogeneity in Complex Oxides, Bled, 2003
