About Digimap for Schools Digimap for Schools is an online mapping service for use by teachers and pupils providing easy access to a range of current Ordnance Survey maps including the most detailed mapping available for Great Britain, OS MasterMap, as well as digital versions of Ordnance Survey's famous paper maps, the Landranger and Explorer series. Also included are street level maps showing street names and road-atlas style maps. Maps can be printed as PDF files at A3 or A4 size with an individual's own map title and name included with the scale bar and school name and address. Search tools include postcode, place name or national grid reference and maps can be moved to centre on any chosen location within Great Britain. Map keys are available for each scale map to explain the symbols used within the map. Maps can be annotated with symbols, lines, areas, text and can be saved to be reused during another session. Digimap for Schools is a subscription service. Schools purchase a subscription for 12 months access to the service. Details on subscriptions can be found at Terms of use of the service can be found at For further information or to give feedback on our resources, contact the EDINA Help Desk on (Mon- Fri 9-5) or edina@ed.ac.uk. 3 Digimap for Schools Geography Resources Ref No: 18 Title of Activity: Teifi Travels Level / Key Stage: 2 Context: River: exploring some landscape and human features along the course of a river from source to mouth Location within GB: River Teifi, Wales. Ideas can be applied to other rivers in the UK. Knowledge / Skills: Using the Search box / Adding markers / Adding labels / Reading maps / using a key. Link to Curriculum: Rivers, using and reading maps, landscape features and place characteristics, using geographical vocabulary. Scottish Curriculum For Excellence: (Social Science Outcomes: People, Place and Environment): 2-09a, 2-12a, 2-14a Note to Teacher The amount of independent work children are able to manage will depend on their familiarity with the software and experience of using maps in general. The step by step tasks are not meant to be read alone by children but as a guide for you the teacher to demonstrate with the whole class and / or direct individuals as appropriate. Each activity has several ideas within it that you can tailor and adapt to suit your class and children. The aim of the pack is to: Support you in developing the use of Digimap for Schools in the classroom across the primary age range Develop the skills of your pupils in the use of the full suite of tools that is currently available Suggest some ideas for developing mapping across the curriculum Save you time and provide inspiration! The contexts for the learning include both physical and human geography, and will explore different scales of mapping from the school grounds to locations in England, Scotland and Wales.

Digimap for Schools Geography Resources Activity Pupils see a presentation of a journey along the River Teifi but the images are muddled and they re not in the right order. They have to use their map skills to help put it right. Introduction The River Teifi (Welsh: Afon Teifi) forms the boundary between the counties of Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire in south-west Wales for most of its length and flows into the sea below the town of Cardigan at Poppit Sands. The source of the Teifi is Llyn Teifi, one of several lakes known collectively as the Teifi Pools, in the Cambrian Mountains. The river passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in mid and west Wales and many of the towns along the route have historic connections or are well known as good places for sightseeing, fishing, canoeing, walking or bird watching. Digimap for Schools enables you to search for these places easily using the search facility and then zoom in to see the landscape details and identify them using Ordnance Survey symbols. Places can be easily annotated using the Digimap for Schools tools. Main Activity Look at the images provided which show a journey along the River Teifi from source to mouth. As you look at the images you can see they are not in the right order. Can the pupils use their maps skills to help you put it right? * Go through the presentation anyway and discuss what the river looks like in each of the images and what the surrounding landscape looks like. There are some prompt questions to help you talk about each place in terms of general landscape and activity. The images are provided in the correct order so you will need to move some images around. The images showing the source and mouth are clearly marked so this will be straightforward to identify unless you hide the captions. Open Digimap for Schools and give pupils a copy of Worksheet 18 Teifi Places. They need to search the map, using the Search box, for the place names that are muddled and put them in the right order. They also need to describe the landscape in each place so will need to zoom in and out of the map and use the key. Tasks: 1. Look at the names on the worksheet that you have to find and do this using the Search box. 2. Add a marker to each place using the Add marker tool on the Annotation toolbar.

3. Add a label to each marker by using the Add label tool in the Modify section of the toolbar. Select this then click on your marker and a text box will open where you can write the name of the place. 4. When you have found all of the places and marked and labelled them, put the names in the right order on the worksheet to show which you would see in turn if travelling from the source to the mouth of the Teifi. 5. Use the map to zoom in at each place where you have added markers and use the key to help you describe some of the human and physical features there. 6. Watch the presentation again and tell your teacher which order the places should be in so that s/he can put it right. What was your favourite place along the river and why? What was the class favourite? How did the landscape and in particular the river change along its journey to the sea? Taking it further Look at the river in more detail using Google Earth Compile a River Guide using Worksheet 18 River Guide. Research different ones in your class and make a collection or book. Use Digimap to help you find some other places along the route. Source images from Geograph and add some interesting text about each place to more slides on the presentation. Or, create a new presentation about another river. Research some more information about your favourite place along the river Design a tourism flyer advertising the River Teifi as a place to go for an activity weekend. Describe the job of someone who has to work on or with the river as their every day job. Geograph Google Earth Weblinks

The River Teifi and its tributaries are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and are also a Special Landscape Area. The river runs through some of the most beautiful landscapes of mid west Wales

River Teifi source The Teifi begins its journey to the sea as a tiny stream from Llyn Teifi, one of a group of lakes high in the Cambrian mountains, mid Wales. Would you like to go climbing here?

Llandysul The Teifi enters the small town of Llandysul in wide meanders and leaves under the town s bridge as rapids over bed-rock. Would you brave the rapids in a kayak? The rapids at Llandysul are popular with canoeists and kayakers.

Newcastle Emlyn Do you know any legends? A ruined castle stands on top of a hill overlooking the broad flowing Teifi at the small market town of Newcastle Emlyn. A local legend says that long ago, a winged wyvern landed on the castle and was killed by a soldier. Its blood turned the river black and killed all the fish.

Cenarth Cenarth Falls is a well known beauty spot and famous for its trout and salmon fishing. The National Coracle Centre is here as well. Coracles are light boats you can carry on your back. They used to be made out of wood and animal skins but now they re mostly made out of canvas. How hard do you think it is to paddle a coracle?

The Welsh Wildlife Centre is situated in the Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve, between Cardigan and Cilgerran. The calmer waters of the Teifi offer more gentle canoeing here. Scenic walks and the bird viewing hides attract lots of tourists. Would you rather go bird watching or canoeing?

Aberteifi or Cardigan The Teifi s journey is nearly over at Cardigan, a bustling town which lies between the sea and the start of the Teifi valley. Why is there a dragon in the river?

Teifi Mouth: Poppit Sands We ve reached the sea! Most of the sand and mud of the Teifi estuary is covered over with the high tide but when the tide ebbs look how much sand there is! What s been your favourite part of the river journey? By the way the dragon was made as part of the River Festival celebrations
