1 South Carolina Trails and Tales of the American Revolution Christopher Bailey West Ashley Middle School Overview This lesson is designed to help students gain a better understanding of the terrain, geographic zones and planes of South Carolina and to get an understanding of how much of the Revolution was fought in South Carolina. The student will use both mapping skills and historical information to create a battle map of SC while gaining an understanding of how landforms can affect the outcome of a battle. Connection to the Curriculum This lesson can be applied to 8 th grade South Carolina and US. It can also be used as an English, math or science lesson since it incorporates all the content areas South Carolina Social Studies Academic Standards Summarize the course and key conflicts of the American Revolution in South Carolina and its effects on the state, including the attacks on Charleston; the Battle of Camden; the partisan warfare of Thomas Sumter, Andrew Pickens, and Francis Marion; the Battle of Cowpens; and the Battle of Kings Mountain. 2 Materials Needed South Carolina: An Atlas Colonial Roads and Rivers Maps of South Carolina. (Located in SC: An Atlas) List of Battle sites showing dates of battles and either grid or exact location. Pens/Pencils Overhead projector Map Transparencies Vis a Vis marker South Carolina History Book Ruler Work Sheet Map coordinate overlay Map Grid overlay Objectives 1. Students will work individually or in pairs 2. Students will plot on the map each of the battle sites. 3. Students will create a journal and write journal entries describing each battle. 4. Students will use mapping and math skills to determine distances. Suggested Procedures 1. Introduce the lesson to students by explaining they are to assume the role of a South Carolina Patriot during the American Revolutionary War. 2. Explain that students will locate on a map the exact location or grid location of the nine battles listed on the instruction sheet or overhead. 3. Label battle sites in RED if it was a British victory or BLUE for a Patriot victory. 4. Explain that students will create a journal. Journals will contain the following information: Short journal entry describing the location of the battle site. Using SC: An Atlas, identify the major rivers and roads crossed while traveling from battle site to battle site. (Pages 4, 15, 16) Describe how the landscape may have influenced the outcome of the battle. (Atlas, p. 3) Describe the landform region where the battle occurred. (Atlas, p. 3, 6) 5. Using a green pencil trace the shortest route from battle site to battle site in chronological order. 6. Measure the distance between battle sites and write the distance on the line. 7. Calculate the total amount of miles traveled. 8. Create a compass rose and a map key for your map.

Lesson Extensions 1. Students can create imaginative journal entries about their experiences as a revolutionary soldier incorporating famous people and colonial leaders. 2. Depending on grade level and ability of students a grid map can be substituted for the exact location map. 3. Add a biography of a Revolutionary Leader from South Carolina. 4. Add a Power Point presentation showing the map location of the battle sites, some historical information about the battles and some pictures of the battle sites.
