W.5.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. Stem Used: What main idea of [passage] is supported by paragraph # through #? Use two details from the article to support your response. pp What main idea of James Forten is supported by paragraphs 1 and 2 on page 424? Use two details from the article to support your response. Possible Exemplary Response: The main idea supported by the paragraphs on pages 424 is that James Forten did not believe that black people are lesser than other people. He remembered seeing slaves escorted through the town, but he never accepted it as natural that black people should be slaves. James also noticed that the black soldiers marching through the streets were something special, seeming taller and blacker than any men he had ever seen. And, there were African sailors, as well. These examples showed him that he could be anything. Possible Details to Include: Other relevant text-based details Score Points: Apply 2-point rubric

4 Exemplary Response 2 Point Reading/Writing Standard(s) RI.5.3 Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text. Use two details from the story to support your response. p. 431 How does Robert Bridges feel about James Forten? Use two details from the selection to support your response. Possible Exemplary Response: Robert Bridges held James in high regard. Mr. Bridges had hired James Forten s father Thomas, and he felt that James, like his father, would be a hard worker. In addition, Robert Bridges must have thought highly of James because he advocated for James to get an education and later trusted him to run the business. Eventually, Robert Bridges would sell his sail business to James. Possible Details to Include: Other relevant text-based details Score Points: Apply 2-point rubric

5 Exemplary Response 4 Point Reading/Writing Standard(s) RI.5.3 Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text. W.5.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. Stem Used: What personality trait do [character A] and [character B] share? How do both characters show this personality trait? Use details from both articles to support your response. pp , Use the biography entitled James Forten, by Walter Dean Myers, on pages in your student reader and the magazine article, Modern Minute Man, by Marcus Duren, on pages in your student reader to answer the following question. Directions Read the articles. Then answer question In the biography James Forten and the article Modern Minute Man, what personality trait do James Forten and Prince Estabrook share? How do both characters show this personality trait? Use details from both texts to support your response. In your response be sure to describe the personality trait both men share explain how each man shows this personality trait use details from both texts to support your response Possible Exemplary Response: Both James Forten and Prince Estabrook are described as brave African American men who fought in the American Revolution. James Forten, by Walter Dean Myers, details the life of James Forten, and Modern Minute Man, by Marcus Duren, provides a brief snapshot into how Prince Estabrook contributed to fighting against the British. James Forten was an African American who grew up during the American Revolution. Most African Americans were enslaved or had very few rights during this time. He was one of the lucky ones, as his family was free. After the death of his father when he was 14, Forten convinced his mother to let him join the fight against the British for America s independence. Forten knew that if his ship surrendered or was captured by the British, he could be sold into slavery. He also showed great bravery as he ran up and down the ship to bring gunpowder to the older sailors. Duren s magazine article provides a glimpse into life of another African American patriot, Prince Estabrook. Estabrook was a slave who fought in the Battle of Lexington in This battle was very significant as it represented the beginning of The Revolutionary War. Prince Estabrook s participation in that battle was just as important as he was the only African American to fight in that battle. Estabrook, along with all of the other men he fought beside, are considered heroes.

6 According to the article, Estabrook and others showed great courage and bravery, risking everything to fight the British; if they were captured, they could have been hanged as traitors. Despite the fact that each of the men chose to fight for different reasons, they both participated in The Revolutionary War effort. These men displayed great valor and boldness, risking their lives to fight the British for independence and freedom, since both men understood deeply the importance of freedom. Possible Details to Include: Other relevant text-based details Score Points: Apply 4-point rubric
