3 NPS Form 10-S00-«OMB Appmml No ) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section number 7 Page i 7. Description The Brockschmidt-Miller House is a 2-story frame dwelling. In style, the house reflects the transition at the turn of the century from Victorian styles and floor plans to the Classical Revival style as influenced by the World's Columbian Exposition in The house is in a residential neighborhood and in excellent condition. The Brockschmidt-Miller House faces east on a large corner lot in a neighborhood of houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It rests on a brick pier-and-beam foundation with a standing-seam metal roof in hipped form. This 2-story frame dwelling is clad in narrow horizontal clapboards. All windows are 1/1 or 2/1 double-hung wooden sashes. A number of mature deciduous trees are scattered on the lot. The house represents the transition from Victorian features of asymmetry, a 2-story bay, irregular plan, and the early 20th-century return to Classical themes of paired, Doric columns, heavy denticulated cornice, and turned balustrade. Overall, the house is designed in a Classical Revival style in ornamentation. The principal facade is highlighted by a 2-story polygonal bay front with single windows in each bay on the northeast corner. A 1-story wraparound porch accents the southeast corner with unfluted Doric columns, turned balusters connecting and above, and a single exterior door on the first and second floors (the first includes a transom). The house was altered in the 1920s with the replacement of a low-pitched roof and shortening of the second floor windows. A tornado shelter also was added at the rear of the house and an addition with fireplace at the northwest corner. A Noncontributing detached garage is at the far northwest property. corner of the

Significance The Brockshmidt-Miller House (1901) is eligible under Criterion C in the area of architecture. It is an excellent example of transitional architecture and the early Classical Revival style. The property is in good condition, retains a high degree of integrity, and is one of the few residences of this style in Brenham. It is associated with the local context "Community Development and Regional Expansion " The Brockshmidt-Miller House (1901) is the second house on this site. The first, constructed in 1885, burned. August Brockshmidt purchased the lot in 1901 and is said to have secured an architect (name xinknown) from Austin who designed this house which cost $2,500. He and his family lived here until it was sold to H.C. Miller, Jr. in 1920 for $6,500. The estate of the Miller's sold the house in 1954 to Dan O'Neill. He demolished a barn at the rear and built the existing garage. The present owners (1989) purchased the house in The house represents the turn-of-the-century trend in residential architecture to borrow from popular styles. The late 19th Century Victorian plan is retained, with an early 20th-century acknowledgement of the Classical Revival. This transition represents an important shift in popular culture. The property has a high degree of integrity.
