1 2017 Summer Work 1. Welcome! I am very excited to be teaching this course. My PhD work is in early modern and modern European history, which means that if I have any right to call myself an expert, it is in this field. That being said, the way we learn and teach history is constantly evolving as new documents, artifacts, methods, and interests are applied to the past. We are thus all learners and even life-long students of the past must work to stay as current as possible. This is a fun course because it allows us to delve into a relatively short period of European history with depth and thus the ability to gain a full understanding of this place and period of European history. The work below is divided into two big parts geography and learning about the lives of everyday folks in the Middle Ages. 2. Building Geographical Awareness Around the world it is a running joke that Americans are ignorant of geography. In fact, students struggle to find their own states on a map of the USA. To develop the depth of understanding that you will need to succeed in this course, I am going to have you complete two maps. The first (Map 1 on Moodle) is a map of Europe at the beginning of our period. The second (Map 2 on Moodle) is Europe today. You will need to print out a copy of each map and label the features, countries, and cities listed for each map. These are due on the first day of class.

3 3. Examining the Lives of People You will be reading portions of Medieval People by Eileen Power. The text is available in a variety of formats at this URL Link to Medieval People. The text highlights the lives of several different kinds of people. You will need to read 3 chapters. You must read about one peasant, one woman, and one merchant (some of the chapters are about female merchants so that counts for each category, leaving you free to read about another person of your choice). For each chapter you should answer the following questions and then upload your answers to Turnitin.com (Class ID: ; Enrollment key: churchill). Here is what you need to answer for each chapter (i.e. you will have 3 sets of answers to each of the chapters) : 1. How did the occupation of the person shape his or her life choices, quality of life, and social power? 2. How important was religion to the person? 3. What obstacles did the person face in his or her life? 4. How did this person s life relate to changes in politics and/or culture? 5. Compared to you, how healthy, educated, and skilled was the person in the chapter? You should type your answers in a standard 12 point font and then upload them to Turnitin.com. Written responses or printed papers will not be accepted. DUE DATES Your maps and chapter questions are due on August 10, You may do them at any time between now and then. Your maps should be handed in to me and the chapter questions should be electronically submitted to Turnitin.com
