1 i GDInfo Sheet GeoDataHub GEOSPATIAL DATA REPOSITORY New Zealand Mapping Service Series The New Zealand Mapping Service (NZMS), introduced in 1948, adopted a unique numbering system based on the indexing method used by the British Geographical Section of the General Staff, War Office. Maps and charts subsequently published by the Department were allocated an NZMS series number. The NZMS series included all published government maps produced by the Department for public consumption, classified maps produced for the Ministry of Defence and a small number of other products, such as Department s internal forms and instructions. The NZMS series numbers range from NZMS 1 to NZMS 347; some include subseries identified by a letter (e.g. NZMS 2A). Not all numbers, 1 to 347, were allocated and some series, despite being allocated a number, were never published. From 1987 to 1996 the NZMS series were issued under a brand name Infomap (e.g. Infomap 344). Individual NZMS series range in size from a single map to over a thousand sheets. Some maps and map series published prior to the introduction of NZMS series numbering system were allocated a series number retrospectively (e.g. NZMS 13 published from 1876 until 1961, or NZMS 20 a single map from 1929). The NZMS series numbering system was discontinued from June 1996, coinciding with a restructure of the Department of Survey and Land Information into Land Information New Zealand, although some maps and charts were still issued under the Series number (e.g. Series 260). All NZMS series maps were classified into seven Catalogue Classes: General, Cadastral, Topographic, Mosaic, Aeronautical, Pacific and Miscellaneous. This classification, established in 1948, has been modified here to better reflect the diversity of map applications and coverage by separating Street, Antarctic and Defence classes from the original classification. The table overleaf lists all NZMS series currently held in this repository, providing their classification, generic title, scale and indicative publication dates or date ranges. The files are provided in JPG and TIF formats, with a selection of NZMS series also available in a georeferenced GeoTIF format. About Cartographic and Geospatial Resources Repository This developing repository of map images initially focuses on maps and charts published by the New Zealand Lands and Survey Department (later called Department of Survey and Land Information, and now Land Information New Zealand) since the 1850s. They are classified into three distinct groups: New Zealand Mapping Service (NZMS) series maps and charts Land and Survey (L&S) series maps and charts Topographic (Topo) series maps In addition, the repository contains digital topographic databases for New Zealand and its offshore islands, Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau and Ross Dependency in Antarctica produced by Land Information New Zealand since 2011 onwards: digital Topographic (Topo) data
