7 OGC Open Confusion Open Source, Open Standards, Open Data are all different Open Source refers to Software with unrestricted sharing access to the source code, many are also Open Standard compliant, but it is not a requirement Open Data is the idea that some data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control. Open Standard refers to rules, guidelines, frameworks for creating interoperability between servers, sensors, computers, etc both proprietary and open source software can use Open Standards and both open data and restricted data can use Open Standards.

8 Why are Standards important? A light bulb fits a socket Individuals can withdraw money from their bank accounts through any ATM anywhere in the world Mobile phones work across multiple countries around the world Latitude and Longitude provide a standard reference system for the Earth GPS coordinates are always provided in the same format OGC

9 OGC Open standards create a World Wide Web of Data Discover, assess, access, aggregate, combine, pass from system to system, etc.
