It depends on what type of particles an object or substance is made of. In this activity we will explore how the smallest chemical units of matter determine whether something is classified as an element, compound or a mixture.

31 7. Appoint one group member come up to collect a set of the Model 1 boxes cut apart so you can sort them (put the card to one side for now). You and your partner sort the drawings into two groups - one group where all the particles are identical and a second group in which the drawings contain more than one type of particle. We may need to do some redistribution materials.

32 Read this! Matter is classified as a pure substance when all of the particles are identical. Matter is classified as a mixture if there are different types of particles present.

Find a photograph and a lab diagram for the equipment you would use to carry out distillation and print that out if possible - or to me for printing (may take a while).
