To recognize reactive poition on organic compound and to predict reaction product, particularly a applied to ubtitution, elimination, and reaction at alcohol and amine. 5. To determine if a compound ha conjugated double bond or i aromatic and to predict reaction product of ubtituted benzene reaction a well a heterocyclic compound. 6. To deign a uccful ynthetic pathway that would allow the production of organic compound uch a ubtituted benzene or tereochemically correct ubtitution product.

2 Goal of the Coure/tip for ucc: Thi coure i deigned to both teach introductory concept in organic chemitry, and to prepare tudent for future organic chemitry coure. Therefore, many baic concept uch a nnclature are taught. However, it mut be emphaized that Organic Chemitry i about undertanding reactivity and predicting reaction outc baed on chemical knowledge, NOT about jut memorizing jargon. So although the jargon i ential for proper communication among chemit (and you will be examined on it), a much greater part of the coure i olving problem that how undertanding of chemical concept. Therefore, a uccful Chem 8H tudent will prepare by reading the book, will attend lecture, ak quetion, and do many practice problem. Simply memorizing factoid will not get you far in undertanding organic chemitry. Exam: There will be a hort exam (50 pt), two regular exam (100 pt) and a final exam (150 pt): Mini Exam 1:., Sept 11, 2012 Exam 2:., October 9, 2012 Exam 3:., November 13, 2012 Final Exam: day December 11, pm room 102 All exam will be in the lecture hall. Make-up exam will be given for excued abence. Drop Date (without a W). Sept 13, 2012 Quizze: During each cla tarting 8/30/12 there will be a 2 point quiz uing clicker (28 minu 2 on the lat week, minu 3 for exam day) for a total of 23 quizze, ince we likely will not have quizze the lat week of cla. There are no make-up quizze, but you are allowed to drop three of thee for a total of 40 pt on quizze. Due to the large number of people in cla, there can be no exception. It i your reponibility to make ure that your clicker repone i regitering on the receiver (i.e. you hould get a green light and your core hould how up on CROPS once I upload the core.) You cannot get point after the fact by aying that you didn t know your clicker wan t working. We cannot accept the excue that you forgot your clicker, lot your clicker, the batterie failed in your clicker, or your clicker wa tolen. You will have to kip the quiz, and jut drop that core. Hwork: Student are encouraged to do problem from each chapter. Problem will be uggeted to help in preparation for the exam. Lab: There are 12 lab, but are combined o that there are 10 graded write-up. The TA will aign point for thee, and the total amount will be adjuted to account for 100 pt of the overall 540 pt.

3 Total point and grading: Exam: Mini Exam 1: 50 pt Exam 2 and 3: 100 pt x Final exam: 150 (400 point for exam) In-cla quizze: 40 point Lab: 100 point Total: 540 point If you mater the learning outc and get at leat a certain percentage of the point in the coure, you are guaranteed the following grade: A: 90% B: 80% C: 70% D: 60% F: 0-59% The cla may be graded on a curve, which may allow for lightly higher grade than the guaranteed percentage.
