5 About this course Continuation of Calc I and II. Trigonometry is an essential component of this class. Short overview of topics: parametrization, polar coordinates, vector analysis, derivatives and integration in higher dim. Connections will be made to Physics whenever appropriate. 6 Learning Outcomes Handle vectors fluently in solving problems involving the geometry of lines curves, planes and surfaces in space. Visualize and draw graphs of surfaces in space. Differentiate and integrate in multivariable settings. Be able to handle optimization problems in multivariable settings Multivariable Calculus 6 / 21

7 Why is this course important? Multivariable Calculus is extremely important. Used to understand motions of stars and galaxies. Used in Tomography, 3D scans, Robotics, Computer games. Making of movies such as Avatar and many video games requires a strong understanding of multivariable concepts. Multivariable Calculus 7 / 21

9 Policy for missing exams and quizzes There will be no makeup exams unless you miss a class because of unwanted reasons such as a documented illness or the death of a family member. 16 What do I need on the final to get x in this course? Example Suppose you have a = 83, p = 75, q = 88, e = 69 and you want to know what grade you need on the final in order to get at least A. 18 My two cents Math 261 is and has always been a hard class. You will need to know Trigonometry very well (see handouts). We have a lot of materials to cover (see syllabus) In order to obtain (deserve) a good grade, you must also work really hard. There is not substitute for good old hard work. I recommend that you spend at least 8 hours per week studying for this class. In order to do well in mathematics (or anything in fact) you must practice (do your homework) You should first work out problems on your own and then discuss with your peers.
