Application in spray formulations Agrochemicals, personal care and paints. Interactions at the air/solution interface and their role in droplet formation. Kinetics of surfactant adsorption. Droplet impaction and adhesion. Theory of bouncing and droplet adhesion. Droplet sliding and retention. Wetting and spreading and definition of the spread factor. Deposition of particle on surfaces Role of interparticle interactions: van der Waal s attraction and double layer repulsion (or attraction). Application in hair sprays, hair conditioning, foundation, creams and lotions. Role of polymers and polyelectrolytes on particle deposition Applications in personal care and cosmetics. Effect of nonionic, anionic and cationic polymers on particle/surface deposition. Particle surface adhesion Short range forces and calculation of the force of adhesion. Surface energy approach to adhesion. Experimental methods for measurement of particle deposition and adhesion. Role of particle deposition and adhesion in detergency Definition of detergency: Wetting, removal of dirt and liquid soiling. Prevention of redeposition of dirt. Application of polymers and polyelectrolytes.
3 Course description Wetting is important in many processes both industrial and natural. In many cases, wetting is an essential prerequisite for application, for example in paint films, crop sprays, cosmetics, pharmaceutical tablets and in preparation of suspensions. Both equilibrium and dynamic processes of wetting are important in coatings. The spreading of liquids on substrates is also an important phenomenon as for example in agrochemical applications and in film coatings. The subject of particle/surface adhesion is important in a number of technological and biological applications, e.g. detergency, paper manufacture, water purification, flotation, fibre manufacture, cell adhesion and attachment, cell separation, bacterial adhesion to tooth surfaces, marine fouling and phagocytosis. The two day course addresses the fundamental principles involved in many of the above processes. Several lectures are given on the thermodynamics of wetting and the concept of contact angles and their measurements, the concept of critical surface tension of wetting and the role of surfactants and the dynamics of the wetting process. Application of these concepts in spray formulations such as those encountered in agrochemicals, personal care and paints will be discussed in a separate lecture. The second part of the course deals with particle deposition and particle/surface adhesion. The forces responsible for particle deposition are discussed and some of their applications in hair sprays, hair conditioning, foundation, creams and lotions. The role of polymers and polyelectrolytes on particle deposition is described, with particular emphasis on application in personal care and cosmetics. This is followed by a lecture on particle surface adhesion that is governed by short-range forces. The theories of particle adhesion are discussed and the methods that can be applied to measure particle deposition and adhesion are briefly described. The role of particle deposition and adhesion in detergency is discussed in a separate lecture. The above course is valuable for chemists and chemical engineers involved in the processes of wetting, spreading and adhesion in the following industries: Pharmaceuticals, Agrochemicals, Paints, Paper coatings, Dyestuffs, Cosmetics and Detergents. It will provide the candidate with fundamental understanding of the phenomenon involved and its application.
4 Course lecturer Prof. Tharwat Tadros Tharwat F. Tadros obtained his Ph.D in 1962 at Alexandria University after which he was appointed to a lectureship in Physical Chemistry at that university. Between he spent a sabbatical leave in the Netherlands to continue his research in colloid and interface science. Between he worked at I.C.I. and ZENECA to lead a group of fundamental research in Colloid and Interface Science. He reached the highest scientific appointment of Senior Research Associate. In the mean time he was appointed visiting professor at Imperial College (London), Bristol and Reading Universities. In these 25 years he carried out research in various fields of surfactants, polymer adsorption and stability, emulsions, nanoemulsions, microemulsions, concentrated dispersions and rheology. He supervised many Ph.D students and postdoctoral research fellows. In 1992 he was elected President of the International Association of Colloid Scientists (IACIS). Tharwat Tadros is the author, or a co-author, of around 290 published papers. He has edited nine books, and authored seven other books: Surfactants in Agrochemicals (1994), Applied Surfactants (2005), Colloids in Agrochemicals (2009), Colloids in Paints (2010), Rheology of Dispersions (2010) and Dispersions of Powders in Liquids (2012), Formulation of Disperse Systems (2014). He was editor of two series published by Wiley-VCH: Colloid and Interface Science Series (6 volumes set, published in ) and Topics in Colloid and Interface Science (3 volumes, ), as well as of the book Self-Organized Surfactant Structures (2011). In 2013 he edited the Encyclopaedia of Colloid and Interface Science that was published by Springer in Germany. He has been Editor-in-Chief for Colloid and Surfaces A and for Advances in Colloid and Interface Science (both published by Elsevier). Since leaving ZENECA, Tharwat Tadros worked as a consultant for various industries and has taught several courses in his specialized fields. He is still co-supervising many Ph.D. students at various Universities. Due to his distinguished research he was awarded two medals by the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK).
