2 A B O U T T H E C O U R S E COURSE DESCRIPTION Design with Constructal Theory (DCT) offers a revolutionary new approach based on physics for understanding and predicting the designs that we find in nature and engineering, from the design of flying animals and machines to the cooling of electronics, urban design, decontamination, vascular smart materials with new functionalities (self-healing, self-cooling), tree-shaped heat exchangers and svelte fluidflow and solid structures. This course shows how you can use constructal theory to design human-made systems in order to reduce trial and error and increase the system performance. First developed in the late 1990s, the Constructal Law holds that flow design (configuration, architecture) arises from the natural evolutionary tendency to generate greater flow access in time and in flow configurations that are free to morph. It unites flow systems with solid mechanical structures, which are viewed as systems for the flow of stresses. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This short course is highly recommended for researchers and designers of all disciplines in science and engineering. The course emphasizes fundamentals and concepts. The teaching is based on geometric thinking, pencil and paper, the simplest mathematics possible, and problem solving in the classroom. Class participation and problem solving topics from the audience are encouraged. The course provides the foundations for pursuing design as science. TEXT AND NOTES The course is based on the new textbook Design with Constructal Theory, by A. Bejan and S. Lorente, published by Wiley, 2008, ISBN The DCT course focuses on the principle-based pursuit of better performance via better configuration, in time. The course teaches the strong connection between the thermodynamic performance and the evolution of the configuration of the system. Key applications of this linkage are the energy design of aircraft structures, electronic packages, urban design, sustainability and globalization.

4 A B O U T T H E I N S T R U C T O R S ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS Adrian Bejan received all of his degrees (BS, 1971; MS, 1972; PhD, 1975) in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has held the J. A. Jones distinguished professorship at Duke University since His work covers thermodynamics, convective heat transfer, porous media, and constructal theory of design in nature. He developed the methods of entropy generation minimization, scale analysis, heatlines and masslines, intersection of asymptotes, and the constructal law. Professor Bejan is ranked among the 100 most cited authors in engineering, al disciplines all countries. He received the Max Jakob Memorial Award and 16 honorary doctorates from universities in 11 countries. Sylvie Lorente received all her degrees in civil engineering (BS, 1992; MS, 1992; PhD, 1996) from the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA), Toulouse. She is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Toulouse, INSA, and is affiliated with the Laboratory of Durability of Materials and Constructions, LMDC. Her work covers several fields, including heat transfer in building structures, fluid mechanics, and transport mechanisms in cement based materials. She is the author of 90 peerrefereed articles and three books. Sylvie Lorente received the 2004 Edward F. Obert Award and the 2005 Bergles-Rohsenow Young Investigator Award in Heat Transfer from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
