1 Course Specifications 1- Basic Information: Course Code: 102 :(بالنسبة لمرحلة البكالوريوس ) hours No. of contact Theoretical: 36 hrs Course Title: Pharmaceutical organic chemistry I Practical: 36 hrs Year/level 1 st year 1 st semester (Mandatory course) 2- Course Goals: This course in organic chemistry is essential for further studies in Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry, and natural product, It is highly recommended for those studying biochemistry, biomedicinal sciences, pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry so it is considered to be a life-long learner for continuous improvement of professional knowledge and skills. It is designed to introduce students to the roles of Organic Chemistry. It covers in detail the (Nomenclature, methods of preparation and chemical characteristics of different classes of aliphatic organic compounds viz: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkadienes, alkyl halides, Organometallic compounds, Alcohols, Aldehyde and Ketones. 3- Intended Learning Outcomes of Course (ILOs): a. Knowledge and understanding After completing the course the student should demonstrate knowledge and comprehensive understanding of :- a1. The principles behind the bonding nature of organic chemistry and how this related to the compound reactivity.

Nomenclature, methods of preparation and chemical characteristics of different classes of aliphatic organic compounds associated with the different functional groups. a3. the organic reaction mechanism b. Professional and Practical b1. Handle and dispose chemicals and pharmaceutical preparations safely. b2. Distinguish between different organic compounds and find their relationship to molecular structure. b3. Identify some organic chemical compounds practically. c. Intellectual c1. Correlate between the chemical structure and chemical reactivity of different organic compounds. c2. Select the appropriate methods of identification of chemical organic compound. d. General and Transferable d1. Work effectively in a team. d2. Formulate written search. d3. Combine information from different sources to improve his presentations. d4. Develop his critical thinking, problem solving and decision making abilities.
3 4- Course Content: Theoretical course Hours Lectures 1- Introduction to the types of organic chemical reactions (SN 1, 6 4 SN 2, free radical and Elimination Reactions). 2- Chemistry of aliphatic hydrocarbons ;( nomenclature, 12 8 preparation and reactions of alkanes, alkenes and alkynes). 3- Chemistry of alkyl halides and organometallic compounds 6 4 (structure, nomenclature, preparation and reactions). 4- Chemistry of alcohols (structure, nomenclature, preparation 3 2 and reactions). 5- Chemistry of aldehyde and ketones(structure, nomenclature, 9 6 preparation and reactions). Total Practical course Hours Lab. 1- Safety measures in organic chemistry labs Identification of some aliphatic organic compound: (i) General aspects 6 2 (i) Alcohols 12 4 (ii) Aldhydes and ketones 12 4 Total Teaching and Learning Methods: 1- Lectures to direct students to textbooks, notes and on-line material. 2- Laboratory practice. 3- Assignments and researches done and presented by the students in seminars.
