10 The Sir Henry Royce Institute For Advanced Materials A 235m investment from government plus 80m by the universities to create an Institute for the rapid maturation of Advanced Materials Hub in Manchester Spokes at Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Cambridge, Imperial, Oxford, NNL and CCFE - each Championing a Core Area. It will allow the iterative design of advanced materials for various applications, providing a critical component to deliver on the government s economic strategy.

15 Materials Systems for Demanding Environments The scope/vision of the MS4DE theme is to design, make, characterise and test (evaluate) new material systems. Initial emphasis on: protective/ smart coatings, hybrid material systems and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) - to widen the parameter space in which structural materials can be used. Underpinning capability for testing in corrosive, HPHT, abrasive and other demanding environments. Extracted from 'Research Opportunities.
