It is also called poor man s bonsai. Tonight we are going to do something a little different: to learn by doing. Alan and I will lead the program and members will have the opportunity to build a moss ball, mount an orchid on it, then take it home. All supplies will be provided by your Society: plant, moss, mix for the center, fishing line, and wire for hanging the finished product. Quantities are limited to the first 40, so come early to get set up. A FEW SUGGESTIONS: Wear older clothes or bring an apron (moss and center mix will be wet/damp) Pair up or work in groups. Everything can be done alone, but an extra hand is very handy for several of the steps. Tonight s program is very different. I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback that you care to share. -Jay Collins Vice President, Programs Future Programs August 10: Miles Burack Catasetums Kokedama Members may bring plants to sell at the July Meeting. 2 Hello Orchid Lovers and Happy July 4th! From Our President 2017 Board of Directors 2012 Board of Directors PRESIDENT Lorraine Conover (561) VICE PRESIDENT, PROGRAMS Jay Collins (513) VICE PRESIDENT, MEMBERSHIP Phyllis Lyons (561) TREASURER Veronica Risko (561) RECORDING SECRETARY Carol Ott (561) CORRESPONDING SECRETARY Marion Israel (561) DIRECTORS Alan LaDuke (561) Carla Lacher (561) LIBRARIAN Sandy Haradon (561) PHOTOGRAPHER & WEB Scott Joffe (561) NEWSLETTER EDITOR Cheryl Dodes (561) Summer is here and we are experiencing the full force of heat and heavy rains. Hopefully your collection was treated with fungicides to keep them disease free. We are in our Hurricane Season until November 30th, so in addition to the heat and rain we normally have you might want to keep a plan in mind for protecting your Chids. Finding a safe place to hang or store them inside temporarily can be difficult. Remember to water well and drain, then treat for pests before bringing in the plants. Some larger collections may present other problems. If you cannot bring all your orchids indoors, leave nothing hanging in the wind. Placing on concrete is preferred to placing directly on the ground where flooding and pathogens might contact your plants. A follow up fungicide treatment could be helpful due to wind blown diseases. Having extra screen material can be very useful when placing plants back out under trees that lost branches because shade is gone. Tying off 4 corners of bigger screen pieces and using S hooks you can make a canopy/s until your tree leaves grow back. It might take a while but your plants will avoid sunburn. Spanish moss draped around can also be helpful. Grow that stuff long and S hook it in a couple spots. We asked you all at an earlier meeting if you would like to learn how to do Kokedama and the response was an overwhelming Yes. This month is your chance to learn and to take home your very own creation with instruction from Jay Collins. Welcome to our new and newer members and continued appreciation for our longtime members. We strive to have a variety of monthly programs that are educational for everyone throughout the year. I still learn something new at each meeting. See you at the meeting! -Lorraine Conover President Thank you to all the members who are participating in the Second Chance Phal Program. We look forward to continuing to adopt out the Whole Food Phalaenopsis each month at our meetings to provide beautiful re-bloomed plants for Hospice By the Sea and hopefully for additional recipients. 3 Dry plants hard once or twice Apply liquid fertilizer instead of water during dry patches. Watch for Thrips when rain has been sparse for several days. Finish top cutting and planting of Vandaceous genera Check the spacing of plants on benches to allow sufficient room for the bases of the plants to receive both air and light. Now is a good time to trim those trees on which orchid are mounted or hung. Removing vertical branches will permit the light our orchids need to enter and will also insure that the tree has less wind resistance in the event of a storm. Be especially careful with watering and relish every opportunity to dry our orchids out. 8 How Refreshing! Refreshments are needed for our July Meeting These refreshments can be: Cookies, cakes, punch, soft drinks, vegetables & dip, cut up fruit, fruit salad, nuts, chips or anything tasty to share with the other members during the break. SPECIAL THANKS TO: Jeanne Sozio, William Thrall, Shirley Schneider, Carla Lacher, Marion Israel Did You Know Orchids grow on all continents except Antarctica. Orchids are epiphytes that do not derive nourishment from the surfaces they are mounted on, nor do they do any harm to trees. The orchid family includes nearly 900 genera, somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 species and over 70,000 hybrids or cultivars. The Orchid Family or orchidaceae is the largest family of angiosperms, or flowering plants in the world. Many orchid hybrids combine different genera of orchids. Example: Blc or Brassolaeliocattleya combines three genera; it is an intergeneric hybrid. Dendrophyllax is a small genus of leafless orchids that occur in Florida and the Bahamas. The Ghost Orchid, Dendrophyllax lindenii is the most famous leafless orchid. It grows in a few specific environments, such as the Fakahatchee Strand near Miami. It is pollinated by the sphinx moth.
