1 Sacred Stones February 2012 Crystal of the Month: Calcite By Larry Bassett Background: Calcite is an amazing crystal and another of my favorites. It was first described in the geological literature in 1758 by A. F. Cronstedt. He named it Kalkspat. In 1804 it was renamed Calc-Spar by R. Jameson. In 1836 it was renamed calcite by J. K. Freiesleben. The word calcite is derived from the Greek word for lime, chalix. Calcite is a very common crystal. It is found everywhere and it is estimated that 4% of the earth's crust is calcite in various forms. Each of the different forms of calcite has a different name and metaphysical properties. These unique forms include: calcite elestial (an elestial is a condition of overgrowth of terminations on a crystal), calcite copper included, calcite enhydro (contains water easily seen when there is an air bubble), calcite golden ray, calcite growth interference (when another mineral obviously interfered with the growth of the calcite), Icelandic spar (usually called optical calcite), calcite phantom (each phantom is composed of minute pyrite crystals), calcite rainbow (any calcite that has rainbows inside), calcite sand (unique cylindrical calcite combined with hard compacted sand), calcite schmoos (shown below, this stone begins as altaite or akaite and it changes or morphs into the tan calcite. It is surrounded by hardened and compacted sand. The are called pseudomorphs and they are found in Russia. They come in the shown cross or pear shaped with calcite on top. There were cartoon characters called shmoos, modeled after the pear shape), calcite singers (vibrate with a wonderful resonance when gently rubbed), well you get the idea. Beyond the different types of calcite, there are the numerous metaphysical marketing varieties. Calcite is found everywhere in the world and it comes in every color including black. Calcite is naturally white or colorless as shown by the two spheres pictured. The luster can range from glassy to dull. When other minerals are present during the formation, the white or colorless forms become other colors. The heart in the photo is called honey calcite. This is Kathy's favorite calcite and we have seen huge sculptures of honey calcite that are amazingly 1

2 beautiful. Mexican onyx is a form of calcite, and different than the quartz variety of onyx. Egyptian alabaster is a form of calcite. One of my favorite calcites is called iceberg blue. Iceberg blue and other incredibly smooth and colorful calcites come from Arizona, Mexico and many other areas. It is incredible how wonderful the smooth texture feels in your hand. Calcites can be pseudomorphs and polymorphs. A pseudomorphous crystal has an irregular form and it is one that has what is called an accidental origin, which means it has no connection with the other minerals in which they occur. A polymorph is the ability of a crystal to exist in more than one form or crystalline structure. You can also make safe and amazing elixirs from the different types of calcite. Why I Love This Stone: One of the more amazing thing about calcite is how most of the raw pieces are so incredibly smooth, soothing, and wonderful to hold. Calcite has an amazing healing and nourishing energy. Perhaps the most incredible part is that calcite brings your focus back to you. You are focused in the present, rather than the past, future, or in your head. You will find yourself feeling with your heart. Calcite is an amazing amplifier of the energy of our thoughts and intentions. It is no surprise that microcrystals of calcite are found in every human pineal gland. The amplification of energy and thoughts by the calcite in your pineal gland is why setting an intention for anything you want to achieve is so important. Calcite is a joyful stone and it is sometimes called the mineral of the ecstatic state. When it comes to calcite, I have a real fondness for green. I have a number of green spheres and the largest is pounds. If I find a nice green calcite, it comes home with me. Green is the healing color, the predominant color of life on earth, and the color of the heart chakra. Calcite helps the body and mind to remember. It is perfect for removing energy blockages and balancing one's energy. Calcite is said to clear and activate all the chakras as well as the subtle bodies. Calcite is considered an etheric cleanser in the Spiritual Apothecary. My experience is calcite goes way beyond that. Calcite is calcium, carbon and oxygen, and together these are thought of as the minerals that connect spirit to life,. They are the foundations that give spirit form. Limestone and marble are a form of calcite that responds to sound and as a component in buildings, especially spiritual structures, the calcite facilitates magical altered states of consciousness. This is especially true when you tone or sing in these structures or while holding these crystals. Calcite will facilitate amazing healings. Composition: Calcite has a simple chemical composition. The clear and white calcites have a chemical formula of CaCO 3. Calcite is in the crystal class of carbonates and the group is calcite. There are inclusions of manganese, iron, magnesium and a host of other minerals that create the 2

3 other tints or colors. Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) is 56% CaO and 44% CO 2. Calcite is present in the three classifications of rock, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Calcite is the primary mineral component of limestone which changes (metamorphic) under heat and incredible pressure and becomes marble. Physical Properties: Calcite has a hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale. Calcite has a specific gravity of 2.7. The name calcite, originally applied to any calcium carbonate pseudomorphous crystal. The pseudomorphous and the polymorphous unusual and irregular forms provide the variations I love. Calcite has one or more of the following light properties, fluorescence, phosphorescence, thermoluminescence and triboluminescence. Fluorescence is due to the presence of small amount of manganese and it glows under some wavelengths of ultraviolet light. Phosphorescence is when it continues to glow after the UV light source is removed. Thermoluminescence is a form of luminescence where the previously absorbed energy from electromagnetic radiation or other ionizing radiation is re-emitted as light when the mineral is heated. Triboluminescence is where the mineral will spark when struck or broken. Mookaite, flint and other crystals have triboluminescence. Calcite is trigonal, which means it will cleave perfectly in three directions. If it fractures it will be conchoidal, which describes it has no distinct plane of separation and the form will have a scallop shape, as does flint. If you find a calcite, it will probably be with other associated minerals such as apatite, barite, biotite, celestite, copper, fluorite, galena, gold, quartz, spalerite, and many others. Calcite is easily scratched and it dissolves in vinegar with effervescence, which means CO 2 gas escapes as bubbles. Experiences: Calcite amplifies energy. It works well when you set a high intention and create a loving environment. We caution students to keep calcite away from clients who have anger, rage, or other emotional issues. The energy of these serious conditions are magnified with calcite. A student related how her husband (now an ex-husband) went into a rage and broke a number of her crystals. If clients or family members have emotional issues, remove the calcite from the area until these issues are resolved. On a much more positive note, students who are stressed, soon relax, then find they are energized and refreshed when they work with calcite. Blue calcite is perfect for students as it helps them learn and retain because it calms and soothes the nerves. Orange calcite works to remove depression when we give it to those who are down. We see a noticeable change within minutes. Green calcite seems to enhance the intuition and psychic abilities. Perhaps this is why I love the green. People become happy and joyful when they hold green calcite. Some even say calcite is a stone of abundance. We meditate in front of my giant green 3

4 calcite, and after studying calcite, I suspect it greatly contributes to our wonderful and amazing meditations. Recommended Uses: Calcite is beneficial anywhere it is placed. Since the harness of calcite is 3 and you can often scratch it with your fingernail, ensure you place it safely. Many place colored calcite on the corresponding chakra. The primary chakra colors (within the body) are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet and these correspond with the root, lumbar, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and crown chakras. When calcite is placed on a chakra it is said to clear and activate the chakra. My experience is any calcite will clear, align, and further open all the chakras. Experience shows that any stone can facilitate the healing of anything, when the client is ready to change, let go of the emotions creating the condition, and allows the body to heal itself. A high intention and love are all that is necessary to allow the crystals to do amazing things. The use of calcite elixirs are highly recommended by some. Essential Oils: Essential oils are powerful, many require dilution, some are photosensitive, and there are possible dangerous contraindications. She initially felt the energy in her hands and soon it was pulsing in areas of her body. She felt loved and nurtured and then her meditation became a new experience. Kathy left her body and when she returned she had no memory of her experiences and journey. She was amazed she was gone for almost an hour. Usually her meditations are physical and visual. I began with a piece of green calcite in each hand. I immediately felt the energy in my hands and then in my arms. Within a few minutes I was filled with an overwhelming feeling of joy and gratitude. I had a profound 4

5 feeling of being loved. My eyes began to tear as I was watching some beautiful events in my life as well as observing events in other's lives. I was surrounded by angels and I entered the profound silence where words are unnecessary and meaningless. I was floating in a lovingly nurtured and protected state. I also felt the calcite working on old issues in my body. When I came out of my meditation I was also surprised it was almost an hour, it seemed like maybe fifteen minutes. Kathy began her second meditation with a piece of green calcite in each hand. She put a piece on her throat and it was too heavy so she moved it to her thyroid. It immediately began to work on a skin outbreak and the muscles below it. The area got extremely hot and it soon cooled to a normal temperature. When the hot healing work ended, she moved the calcite back to her throat and it felt lighter. Then this piece began to feel very cold. She felt her etheric biofields were skewed and they were rotated to the right by about 20 degrees. She worked through the cold and the heavy emotional feelings. Over the next hour and a half she experienced how the calcite adjusted her etheric biofields until they were again aligned and balanced. The calcite warmed and became lighter as the work finished. When the meditation ended, she felt much better physically and emotionally. I began the second meditation a piece of iceberg blue calcite in each hand. I was thinking about all the prophecies of I immediately felt the energy of the calcite in my hands and then in my arms. I marveled at how smooth the calcite was as I gently stroked it with a finger as I relaxed. The intensity of the energy in my hands was incredible and it continued up my arms and throughout my body. I felt the iceberg blue calcite working on various areas of my body. Then I saw how the earth has completed its ascension and it was firmly anchored in the higher dimensional realms. Some might call this the fifth dimension, yet I think that is too limiting. However, this made no sense to me and then I saw that it is humanity who is failing to live in the higher dimensional realms. We are unfocused and we still live in our past, or our future, rather than the present moment. Our focus is fear, or other lower limiting emotions, rather than love and compassion. We fail to give our energy to the divine expression of god within each of us. We give our energy to our fears and to the other divine souls around us, rather than to love and intensify our connection with our own divinity. The spark of divinity within most of humanity is still a spark, rather than a luminous light body. We prevent the alignment of our ego and divine inner child to live in partnership with our Higher Self so it can express itself through the body. We diminish our power and waste our energy. We ignore the Higher Self within us and the reality is we need our divinity to live through us and partner with us in all of our activities. The work to get the earth to ascend is complete, it is humanity who needs to ascend with her. It is our fearful consciousness that creates our extremes in weather and the terrible earth changes. We live in fear because we listen to those who live in 5

6 fear or those who attempt to control us through fear. It is time to listen to our heart and focus on living as divine souls in harmony with our mother earth. This was an enlightening meditation. When looking at something through it, you see a double image. Calcite has an incredible number of industrial, building, oil, manufacturing, health care, and other applications. Research continues to find new calcite applications. Calcite is the primary mineral component in cave formations, stalagmites, veils, cave pearls, soda straws, stalagmites and many other forms. Calcite healing properties vary with each type and color. Blue is used for the throat, lungs, tonsillitis, thyroid, arthritic joints and high blood pressure. Green benefits the heart, thymus, chest, shoulders and lower lungs. It is beneficial for tumors, sinus and throat issues and other malignancies. It is used for infections. It has also been used with lepidolite and quartz to eliminate candida. Honey calcite is beneficial for the kidneys, bladder, female organs, menopause and children who wet the bed. Clear and white calcite works on issues with kidneys, pancreas and spleen. Orange is useful for calcium issues, chronic fatigue, genitals, intestines, irritable bowel 6

7 syndrome, kidneys, and reproductive system. Yellow calcite is beneficial for the back, intestines, stomach and spine. I always believe any stone can facilitate the recovery of those who work with stones. Calcite has by consensus been used for many physical and emotional issues.
