WA The President s Report A very happy birthday to all our Cancerian members. Our Astro chat which was held on Thursday 19 th June at Jeanette Lewis-Hill s place proved to be an enjoyable evening. The subject Doing Things by the Moon proved to be very interesting. The discussion ranged from when to cut one s hair to promote or retard its growth, to gardening and planning events by the moon s phases or signs. We also found the time to look at a couple of charts, including that of the gas explosion at Apache Energy that is affecting our state. Thanks to all of you who made this evening a success. Our Astro Mundi weekend is fast approaching and will be held at the Metro Hotel on Canning on 12 th /13 th July. I, for one, am looking forward in anticipation to hearing both Joy and Mari speak. To all of you who have already booked, many thanks; I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the Metro. You may all be pleased to know that Joy and Mari have agreed to offer 15 minute readings, forty-five minutes prior to and after the lectures for the day. See the advertisement in this MM and please book early so that they will be aware of what they are up for. If you wish you may bring your own salad or sandwiches or buy them at reception. Many of us are considering going to the Millpoint Cafe Bookshop for lunch. They have agreed to have lunch waiting for us if we order it in the morning and give them a time of our arrival. I will provide a menu for you on Saturday morning. We will need to know definite numbers as it is not a very big dining area. They have suggested that we may choose to order our coffees as take-away when we get there, to save on time. Our Meet the Speakers Dinner will be held on Saturday 12 th July evening and those of you who would like to attend together with your partners, are all welcome. The venue and estimated cost is advertised in this MM As many of you may have noted from the advertisements Christmas in July is proving to be popular and we need to get our booking confirmed in the next few days or we could lose out altogether. When: Saturday 12 th July Morning(Mari): Casting Down & Rising Up: The Origins of the 2 nd and 8 th Houses The terms epicataphora and anaphora are not familiar to the modern astrologer. They are names given to the 2 nd and 8 th houses and refer to their principal role as portals of the underworld. This workshop looks at the meaning of both these houses and their significance in astrological practice. Afternoon(Joy): Where the Wild Things Are In traditional astrology the three planets of Moon, Venus and Mars are a threesome collectively known as the nocturnals. They guide our desires, our appetites and our emotions, and yet they are often the planets with which we have the most uneasy relationship. This workshop introduces the nocturnals, giving you a whole new perspective on their collective power. The workshop gives examples on how we can examine the nature of the wild ones, and how we can best tame them to our best advantage. When: Sunday 13 th July Morning(Mari): Archetypes and Addictions The notion of addictions is not confined to substances but can also be applied to addictive behaviour patterns. Individuals can be engulfed by obsessions, which can be detrimental. Uncovering and understanding the underlying archetype in these behaviours can be a powerful tonic. This lecture will explore Pluto s influence with the personal planets as a signature of obsession and addiction in the individual. The lecture will also focus on the key issues underpinning these combinations and the possible ways in which they can be realised, released and integrated. Afternoon(Joy): Survive or Thrive? Life s Primary Motivation What drives you forward in life? How do you determine wherever your purpose in life lies, and how can you accomplish it? This workshop explores these questions by delineating the chart through the focus of a technique known as Primary Motivation. The technique borrows from the traditional principles, but is easily and effectively incorporated in modern astrological practice. A quick Cook s tour through a natal chart seen through thoroughly medieval eyes. Highly relevant to their talks and it did receive a very good reception at the Sydney Conference earlier this year. Both Joy Usher and Mari Garcia have agreed to do this reading for anyone who would like to have a Quintus Decimus during the 45 minutes prior to, and following their talks each day. 5 Christopher Columbus' 1st voyage Did Columbus use Electional Astrology? By Radu Moisoiu, from Romania We are aware today that Christopher Columbus had deep astrological knowledge, as his voyage logs make references to the current astral configurations. Also it was a custom in those days that the ships would use the services of an onboard astrologer. In this article, I will explore this issue, looking for astrological evidence for Columbus use of astrology. Christopher Columbus' 1st voyage started on August 3, 1492 JC (old style calendar) or August 12, 1492 GC (current calendar) from the port of Palos de la Frontera (6w53, 37n14), near Huelva, in southern Spain, in command of three ships: the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. He mentioned in his journal: "I set sail from the port, on Friday, the third of August, half an hour before sunrise". The Sun rose that day at 5:17 am LMT, therefore he must have set sail from the port at approx. 4:47 am LMT (+00:27:32). Claudia von Schierstedt, a German astrologer affirms that the initial departure took place at 4:30 am LMT, which I cannot agree with, since it contradicts Columbus' own journal. But before entering the sea, he made a stop at a sand bank and waited for 3 hours. Why? The only possible explanation is that Columbus, a skilled astrologer, awaited a good astrological moment on that day for his departure. He further mentioned in his journal: "Set sail from the bar of Saltes at 8 o'clock" and this is the real departure time in his overseas voyage. Here is a map of the southern Spain, showing the position of the port of Palos de la Frontera and showing how it was possible for Colombus to have a second departure time for the voyage The initial departure chart (August 3, 1492 JC, 4:47 am LM, Palos, Spain), is not favourable to long overseas voyages, although presents a strong first house (the ships and their crew) - Leo rising with its ruler, the Sun, strong in domicile and the first house, planetary hour of the Sun. The long voyages natural ruler Jupiter is also ruler of the 9th house but is improperly situated in the 12th house, although strong in its exaltation sign, Cancer. Also there is no relationship between the 9th and the 1st houses, as we would Page 5

6 want to see in such important voyage charts. I'd say it is no wonder that Columbus, who studied astrology, had chosen to have a second departure time, the final one, at the much more auspicious moment of : 8:00 am LMT. ( as he records it in his journal) The chart is represented in "electional astrology style", showing only applying aspects between planets. This departure chart has Virgo rising, 9 th house cusp in Taurus, with Venus 9 th house ruler located strongly in the 1st house and its domicile, Libra. Planetary hour of the Moon (which had rulership over the seamen in ancient astrology, previous to Neptune's discovery) The Moon is located in Sagittarius (long voyages), in the 3rd house of travels, where she has her "joy" according to the ancient astrological rules, which is a very good position, favourably influencing the flow of events. Moon's aspects in Sagittarius are: First applying aspect of the Moon is the sextile to retrograde Saturn. This is not a good aspect since Saturn signifies delays and obstacles, but the sextile is normally a very good aspect, and those problems could however be overcome. Indeed, only three days later, a storm damaged the Pinta s rudder. The crew jerry-rigged a rudder and, with difficulty, sailed to Grand Canary Island. With limited facilities in the port, it was a month before the rudder was repaired. On September 6, the fleet finally weighed anchor and sailed into the unknown. Next applying aspect of the Moon is the trine with the Sun, a most favourable aspect, indicating the good outcome of the voyage, reaching land on October 12 (JC) at about 2:00 am. The last aspect of the Moon tells us how the story ends: it is the conjunction with Neptune, the master of illusions and confusion - Christopher Columbus believed until his death in 1506 that he had arrived in the "Indies", the medieval name for Asia It is interesting to note two fixed stars conjunctions: the Midheaven is conjunct Polaris (instinctual sense of direction in life) and Betelguese (wealth, fame, honours). There are also other important observations: The departure chart for Christopher Columbus' 1st voyage over the Atlantic has some very tight and meaningful connection with the Sibly natal chart of the USA (12 deg. Sagittarius rising). Page 6

7 The voyage chart Sun conjunct with the Sibly 9th house cusp, Moon on Sibly chart Ascendant at 12 Sagittarius, Jupiter on Sibly chart Pars Fortunae - three astrological arguments which confirm the validity of the Sibly chart over the other proposed natal charts for the US. 8 Obama's Prospects by Michael (Wolfstar)O Reilly NewsScope; June 16, Just released - Barack Obama's 7:24 pm Birth Time The Obama camp finally released his birth certificate in response to claims from the political fringe that he was born in Kenya, and therefore ineligible to run for president. For the astrological community, the search for his accurate birth time is over, and we now know that he was born at 7:24 pm, which gives him 18º03' Aquarius Rising and 28º53' Scorpio his Midheaven The horoscope previously used for Obama (set for 1:06 pm) resonates strongly with what we now know is the correct time (7:24 pm). What was formerly a 19º Aquarius-Leo vertical axis is now an 18º Aquarius- Leo horizontal axis. When he announced his candidacy on February 10, 2007, transiting Saturn and Neptune opposed each other along this degree zone. Likewise, the Solar Eclipse that took place on February 9, 2008 right after Super Tuesday illuminated these key degrees. A major difference between these two charts is his twelfth house, which now looks exceptionally charmed. With Saturn dignified in its own sign and lucky Jupiter tenanting his twelfth house, we may now view this house as full of secret benefactors. He refers to the widespread support he has among Fortune 500 CEOs. His candidacy began precisely as his progressed Moon entered the twelfth house. Obama's progressed Moon will be conjunct his Ascendant on December 17, This will mean that his entire election campaign was conducted while his progressed Moon was travelling through his twelfth house. His political enemies searched in vain for skeletons, but with Jupiter and a dignified Saturn protecting him, they found nothing. What Obama is doing in this campaign is channelling some collective urge for unity. On November 4 (election day) transiting Saturn and Uranus will be forming an exact opposition, pitting elements of the status quo (Saturn) against the forces for dramatic change (Uranus). With Aquarius Rising and transiting Uranus in his first house, Obama clearly personifies the Uranian element. Obama's progressed Sun will be very favourably sextile his Midheaven in 2009, which represents a very natural assumption of power. Page 8
