WA The President s Report I would like to wish all you Geminis a very happy birthday. Geminis Our Three Speakers Day on May 4 th at the 7 th Avenue Bar at Midland was a great success. It was so nice to see so many of you there and welcome a couple of new faces. Our thanks go to Edith, Jeanette and Paul for providing us with a wealth of information for us to take away and mull over. All the speakers left us wishing there had been more time to delve much deeper into their varying subjects. Their talks at times prompted quite a lively discussion from the rest of us. From the feedback I have received we all had a very enjoyable day. I am looking forward to seeing quite a few of you at our next AstroChat which will be held on Thursday 19 th June at Jeanette Lewis-Hill s place. The subject is Doing Things by the Moon. As usual, be there for a 7:30 pm start or 6:30 pm if you wish to bring a plate to share. All are welcome. Our Astro Mundi weekend is fast approaching and will be held at the Metro Inn on 12 th /13 th July. At the risk of sounding like a broken record by repeating myself, please book early and not risk missing out on hearing these two very talented and knowledgeable speakers. I am sure that all of you are aware that both Joy Usher and Mari Garcia are very much sort after these days. We are lucky that they have so readily agreed to fit us into their extremely tight schedule. As you can see from the flyer in this newsletter the topics they have chosen should prove not only fascinating, but educational as well. It is becoming more and more difficult to find suitable, inexpensive venues to hold our functions, with many of the available venues fixing a high minimum number of attendees. In our efforts to bring our members more for their money we have endeavoured to keep costs down, despite the fifty percent and over increase in the cost of all venues sourced. Please book as early as possible to take advantage of the major savings to all members. We would also appreciate getting an idea of how many will be taking advantage of this golden opportunity, in order to aid us in our organization of this event. Please note that we have not included the cost of lunch and are presently working on a list of available eating places close to the Metro, which should suit all budgets and tastes. Introducing Mari Garcia Prac Cert FAA Mari is a consulting astrologer who started formal astrological studies in 1990 with Astro Logos in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. She received the Practitioners Certificate from the Federation of Australian Astrologers in 1995 and was awarded the Alan Johnson Gold Medal for achieving the highest marks in that year. Mari has also undertaken the Robert Zoller Medieval Course as well as the Post Graduate Certificate in Medieval Astrology awarded by Astro Logos. She has also under taken and successfully completed Bernadette Brady s Fixed Star Course. She has lectured at the Federation of Australian Astrologers SA Inc, the Australis 97 Astrological Congress and the Forum of Professional Astrologers Seminar Series. Mari also spoke at UAC 2002 in Orlando, Florida. She has published journal articles and writes regular columns for a number of publications. She edited Astrology - An Ancient Art in the Modern World: Australis 97 Congress papers and was also a contributor to the anthology. Joy is a Faculty Member of The Astrological Guild of Educators International (AGE Int) and joined the Astro Logos Open Learning program as a Tutor in She is a practicing astrologer and educator. She began her studies in 1991 with Astro Logos and gained her FAA Practitioners Certificate in She served as co-ordinator of the FAA Exam Board from She has been published in the FAA Journal and the Australis '97 Congress Papers, and her special interest is in applying mythology and medieval techniques to modern consulting practice. Introducing Joy Usher Prac Cert FAA She has lectured at the AUSTRALIS '97 Congress in Adelaide (January 1997), FAA Conference in Brisbane (January 1998) and the Trans-Tasman Conference in Canberra (June 1998) for which she was awarded the 'Rev John Farquarhson Award for Best Presenter. When: Saturday 12 th July Morning(Mari): Casting Down & Rising Up: The Origins of the 2 nd and 8 th Houses The terms epicataphora and anaphora are not familiar to the modern astrologer. They are names given to the 2 nd and 8 th houses and refer to their principal role as portals of the underworld. This workshop looks at the meaning of both these houses and their significance in astrological practice. Afternoon(Joy): Where the Wild Things Are In traditional astrology the three planets of Moon, Venus and Mars are a threesome collectively known as the nocturnals. They guide our desires, our appetites and our emotions, and yet they are often the planets with which we have the most uneasy relationship. This workshop introduces the nocturnals, giving you a whole new perspective on their collective power. The workshop gives examples on how we can examine the nature of the wild ones, and how we can best tame them to our best advantage. When: Sunday 13 th July Morning(Mari): Archetypes and Addictions The notion of addictions is not confined to substances but can also be applied to addictive behaviour patterns. Individuals can be engulfed by obsessions, which can be detrimental. Uncovering and understanding the underlying archetype in these behaviours can be a powerful tonic. This lecture will explore Pluto s influence with the personal planets as a signature of obsession and addiction in the individual. The lecture will also focus on the key issues underpinning these combinations and the possible ways in which they can be realised, released and integrated. Afternoon(Joy): Survive or Thrive? Life s Primary Motivation What drives you forward in life? How do you determine wherever your purpose in life lies, and how can you accomplish it? This workshop explores these questions by delineating the chart through the focus of a technique known as Primary Motivation. The technique borrows from the traditional principles, but is easily and effectively incorporated in modern astrological practice. ("The MAGUS or CELESTIAL INTELLIGENCER" by Francis Barrett) The ancient astrologers knew and used in their work (aside from the 12 zodiacal signs of the Sun) also 28 mansions of the Moon or lunar mansions. They represent an ancient wisdom, now very little spread among the astrologers, yet they are of great use both in natal and elect ional astrology as well as in magical purposes. Page 5

6 These mansions are subdivisions of the zodiac, equal in size, which start at 0º Aries and last 12º51 26 each.
