2 Recreatinal Water Prgram Cmpnent Certificatin Specificatin fr Manual and Autmated Pl Cleaners CCS Scpe: This establishes evaluatin and testing criteria fr manual and autmated pl cleaners. The criteria include requirements fr the materials, design and cnstructin, marking, installatin and use instructins, and perfrmance f the equipment t pick up certain cntaminants in the pl water. Autmated pl cleaners shall als be evaluated fr the pattern f flr/wall cverage. 1.0 Pl cleaner systems and related equipment fr public use Pl cleaners and related equipment intended fr public use shall be evaluated fr cnfrmance t the requirements f this standard. This standard des nt purprt t address all f the safety cncerns. It is the respnsibility f the user f this standard t establish apprpriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability f regulatry limitatins prir t use. 1.1 Limitatins NSF, in perfrming its functins in accrdance with its bjectives, des nt assume r undertake t discharge any respnsibility f the manufacturer r any ther party. NSF shall nt be respnsible t anyne fr the use f r reliance upn this standard by anyne. NSF shall nt incur any bligatin r liability fr damages, including cnsequential damages, arising ut f r in cnnectin with the use, interpretatin f, r reliance upn this standard. 2.0 Definitins Autmated Pl Cleaner: a pl cleaner intended t cllect debris and sediment frm the swimming pl withut direct human cntrl Manual Pl Cleaner: a pl cleaner intended t cllect debris and sediment frm the swimming pl that requires manual cntrl t perfrm the intended functin Cleaning Path: The width f the autmatic r manual cleaning device measured frm the inside f the utermst wheels, track, r ther drive device. In the absence f wheels, a track r ther drive device, the cleaning path shall be defined as the width measured frm the utside edge f the utermst brushes r cleaning appurtenances Integral: Part f the device that cannt be remved withut cmprmising the device functin r physical integrity f the system. Readily accessible: fabricated t be expsed fr cleaning and inspectin withut using tls Sealed: Fabricated withut penings t prevent entry f liquid. 3.0 Materials 3.1 General This dcument is the prperty f NSF Internatinal. 3 All pl cleaner materials cntacting water shall meet the health safety review and crrsin resistance requirements f Sectin 3 and Annex A f NSF/ANSI Standard Alternate materials If ther specific materials r cmpnents are utilized, thse cmpnents and materials must be evaluated as satisfactry frm the standpint f public health and perfrmance fr the intended enduse. 4.0 General Requirements 4.1 Debris and sediment cllected by the pl cleaner shall be readily remvable. 4.2 Autmated pl cleaners utilizing a cntainer t cllect the debris and sediment shall pssess a mechanism fr alerting the user when the filter has been filled 5.0 Perfrmance 5.1 Cntaminant Remval Manual r autmated pl cleaners shall be tested fr quantitative remval f cntaminants frm underwater surfaces Test Area The device under test shall be perated in ne cntinuus single pass ver a test area defined as fllws: - The length f the test area cnsidered fr cntaminant remval shall be 3.0±0.5 feet, and preceded by a length f uncntaminated surface equal t the length f the device under test r a minimum f 2.0 feet, whichever is greater, and fllwed by a length f uncntaminated surface equal t the length f the device under test r a minimum f 1.5 feet, whichever is greater - The width f the test area cnsidered fr cntaminant remval shall be 1.0±0.5 inches less than the full width f the cleaning path f the device under test - The test surface shall be submerged in water having a depth that is a minimum 28 - Test water shall have a temperature f 75±10 F, and shall have a turbidity f 2.0 NTU Test Surfaces Testing shall be perfrmed n each f the fllwing test surfaces: - Gruted ceramic, prcelain, r glass tile having a smth and unifrm surface, r a prefabricated tile-like surface that pssesses similar surface features (i.e. the depressins in the grut lines arund tiles, etc.) - Vinyl pl liner, finely textured - Cncrete Cast in place cncrete, cement bard, r gunite shall be acceptable The surface shall be trweled smth, r equivalent This dcument is the prperty f NSF Internatinal. 4 N plaster, epxy r paint shall be applied ver the cncrete Jints shall be permitted in the test area prvided they are filled with an apprpriate patching cmpund t a level even with the surrunding cncrete Cntaminants Separate tests shall be perfrmed with each f the fllwing cntaminants n each f the test surfaces: - Sand Sand shall be washed #20 silica sand cnfrming t f NSF 50 The cncentratin shall be 8 ml f dry sand per square ft f cntaminated test area - Elastic hair ties Hair ties shall have an un-stretched verall diameter f 2.0±0.5 inches and a crsssectinal diameter f 0.125±0.063 inches Hair ties shall have n metal fasteners incrprated in their design The cncentratin shall be 2 hair ties per square ft f cntaminated test area - Leaves Whle leaves shall be used Green (still live) leaves shall nt be used Tw size grups f leaves will be used during testing: Grup 1: Shall have lbed r incised margins (fr example, ak leaves) The length f the leaves shall be 6.0±1.0 inches frm apex t base The greatest width f the leaf blade shall be 4.5±1.0 inches A petile shall be present n 50±10% f the leaves used fr testing, and shall be 1.0 inches in length This dcument is the prperty f NSF Internatinal. 5 Grup 2: Shall have an val r similar shape, and have whle r dentate margins (fr example, elm r varius plar leaves) The length f the leaves shall be 3.5±1.0 inches frm apex t base The greatest width f the leaf blade shall be 2.0±1.0 inches A petile shall be present n 50±10% f the leaves used fr testing, and shall be 1.0 inches in length The number f leaves frm each size grup used during testing shall be equal A petile f a leaf shall nt be cnsidered when measuring length Leaf stems shall nt be present The cncentratin shall be 2 leaves per square ft f cntaminated test area Methd 1. Install and cnditin the device under test in accrdance with the manufacturer s instructins 2. Device settings: a. When applicable, the device under test shall have a clean, unused filtratin element i. If the manufacturer prvides filtratin elements specific t the cntaminant being tested, the apprpriate filtratin element shall be used b. Devices that utilize the pl circulatin system filter t capture vacuumed cntaminants: i. Install a filter r apprpriate device t capture all f the cntaminatin remved by the device under test prir t returning water t the test tank OR ii. Install a system r device n the test tank that des nt return vacuumed water t the tank during the test, and maintains the required level f water Nte: this ptin will require cntaminatin quantificatin after testing in accrdance with 8.a.ii.1 (amunt f cntaminant remaining in test area) c. If the device under test allws the user t adjust peratinal settings accrding t the type f surface being cleaned, the device shall be set t the applicable surface setting fr the test being perfrmed d. If the device allws the user t adjust the linear speed f travel, the device shall be set t the standard/median speed e. If the device allws the user t adjust the suctin r cleaning intensity, the device shall be set t the standard/median level 3. Prir t testing, quantify the amunt f cntaminant being used a. When testing with sand as the cntaminant: i. Obtain a dry weight f the vlume f sand required in sectin , and recrd as w 1 ii. If the device under test utilizes an nbard filtratin element, btain a dry weight f the filtratin element f the device under test and recrd as w 2 1. Place the element in an ven set at 140±5 F fr a minimum f 6 hurs 2. Weigh the elements immediately after remval frm the drying ven a. Nte: a cntainment vessel r pan with knwn tare weight shall be permitted fr ease f handling prvided it is dried alng with the filtratin element b. When testing with hair ties r leaves, recrd the number f individual hair ties r leaves used 4. Evenly distribute the cntaminant ver the applicable test area a. Prir t distributing leaves r hair ties, they shall be cnditined by submerging in water until negatively buyant, but at a minimum 24 hurs This dcument is the prperty f NSF Internatinal. Page 5 f 10

6 5. Operate the device under test, allwing a single pass ver the cntaminated test area a. Unless therwise specified by the manufacturer, manual vacuums shall be held at an angle f 45 b. Manual pl cleaners shall maintain cntact with the cleaning surface at a cnsistent speed, and travel in a straight path c. Initiate the device at the beginning f the test surface that precedes the test surface being cnsidered fr cntaminatin remval d. The device under test shall pass ver the cntaminated test area and nt deviate frm a straight path e. Unless therwise specified by the manufacturer, manual vacuums shall be perated at a speed f 1.25±0.25 feet per secnd f. The device under test shall cntinue t perate t the end f the test surface that fllws the test area cnsidered fr cntaminatin remval 6. After the device under test reaches the end f the test area, stp and turn ff the device under test a. Any cntaminatin that falls ut f the device under test after turning ff but prir t remving the device under test frm the test water shall be cnsidered nt t have been captured 7. Fllw the manufacturer s instructins fr remving the device frm the pl 8. Quantify the cntaminant remval f the device under test a. When testing with sand as the cntaminant: i. Fr devices utilizing an nbard filtratin element(s): 1. Remve and dry the filtratin element(s) f the device under test, taking care nt t disldge any entrapped cntaminants 2. Cntaminatin that is disldged during remval f filtratin element(s) shall still be cnsidered t have been captured 3. Obtain a dry weight f the siled filtratin element(s) f the device under test and recrd as w 3 a. Place the element in an ven set at 140±5 F fr a minimum f 6 hurs b. Weigh the elements immediately after remval frm the drying ven i. Nte: a cntainment vessel r pan with knwn tare weight shall be permitted fr ease f handling prvided it is dried alng with the filtratin element 4. The percent f sand remved shall be calculated by: ii. Fr devices that utilize the pl circulatin system filter: 1. Quantify the amunt f sand remaining n the test surface by manually remving and btaining a dry weight OR 2. If an inline filter r apprpriate device was installed in step 2, quantify the cntaminant remval using the same methd as fr devices using an nbard filtratin element (step 8.a.i, abve) b. When testing with hair ties as the cntaminant: i. Cunt the number f hair ties remaining n the test area r remve the filtratin element f the device and cunt the number f hair ties captured c. When testing with leaves as the cntaminant: i. Cunt the number f leaves remaining n the test area r remve the filtratin element f the device and cunt the number f leaves captured This dcument is the prperty f NSF Internatinal. Page 6 f 10

7 5.1.5 Acceptance Criteria ii. Shuld leaf fragments remain in the test area, the fractin f the leaf remaining (by area) shall be estimated upwards t the nearest ¼ A manual r autmated pl cleaner may be rated fr the remval f sand, small debris, leaves, r any cmbinatin theref. A device rated fr the remval f sand shall remve 85% f sand frm each test surface A device rated fr the remval f small debris shall remve 75% f the ttal number f hair ties used frm each test surface A device rated fr the remval f leaves shall remve 75% f the ttal number f leaves used frm each test surface 5.2 Pl Cverage Autmated pl cleaners shall be tested t assess the ability t cmpletely pass ver all areas f a standard shaped pl during a standard cleaning cycle Test Pl The device under test shall be perated in a standard shaped pl measuring a minimum f 16 feet by a minimum f 32 feet. The depth f the pl shall be at a minimum 36 inches. N bstructins r bstacles shall be lcated in r arund the perimeter f the test pl Test Surfaces The surface f the test pl shall be permitted t be any ne f the surfaces described in sectin Prcedure Either methd belw may be used, prvided an accurate measurement f cverage area is btained Methd I 1. Install and cnditin the device under test in accrdance with the manufacturer s instructins a. When applicable, the device under test shall have a clean, unused filtratin element i. If the manufacturer prvides filtratin elements specific t the cntaminant being tested, the apprpriate filtratin element shall be used b. Devices that utilize the pl circulatin system filter t capture vacuumed cntaminants: i. Install a filter r apprpriate device t capture all f the cntaminatin remved by the device under test prir t returning water t the test tank c. If the device under test allws the user t adjust peratinal settings accrding t the type f surface being cleaned, the device shall be set t the applicable surface setting fr the test being perfrmed d. If the device allws the user t adjust the linear speed f travel r suctin/cleaning intensity, the device shall be set t standard/median levels e. If the device allws the user t adjust the type f cleaning cycle perfrmed (light/quick, regular, heavy duty, etc.), the device shall be set t the standard/median level 2. 8 i. #20 flint gravel, 1/8 x 1/16 stne, washed 1. The cncentratin shall nt exceed 4 ml f dry gravel per square ft f pl area OR ii. Elastic hair ties 1. Hair ties shall have an un-stretched verall diameter f 2.0±0.5 inches and a crss-sectinal diameter f 0.125±0.063 inches 2. Hair ties shall have n metal fasteners incrprated in their design 3. The cncentratin shall nt exceed 2 hair ties per square ft f pl area b. Fr devices cntaining nbard filtratin elements, the vlume f cntaminant used shall nt exceed 90% capacity f the nbard filtratin element c. When testing with gravel as the cntaminant, btain a dry weight f the vlume f gravel and recrd as w 1 i. Place the element in an ven set at 140±5 F fr a minimum f 6 hurs ii. Weigh the elements immediately after remval frm the drying ven 1. Nte: a cntainment vessel r pan with knwn tare weight shall be permitted fr ease f handling prvided it is dried alng with the filtratin element d. When testing with hair ties, determine the number f individual hair ties used and recrd as n 1 3. Evenly distribute the cntaminant ver the applicable test area a. If used, hair ties shall be cnditined by submerging in water until negatively buyant, but at a minimum 24 hurs b. If the device under test is designed t clean vertical pl surfaces, prvisins shall be made t include wall areas in the evaluatin f the percentage f the pl surface area cleaned 4. Operate the device under test fr ne cmplete standard cleaning cycle, and stp and turn ff the device under test 5. Quantify the cntaminant remval f the device under test a. When testing with gravel as the cntaminant: i. If the device utilizes an nbard filtratin element, remve the filtratin element(s) and cllect all gravel captured by the device under test. If the device utilizes the pl circulatin system filter, quantify the cntaminant remval by cllecting the gravel in the inline filter r apprpriate device that was installed in step 1b ii. Obtain a dry weight f gravel captured by the device under test and recrd as w 2 iii. The percent pl area cvered shall be calculated by: b. When testing with hair ties as the cntaminant: i. Cunt the number f hair ties captured and recrd as n 2 ii. The percent pl area cvered shall be calculated by: Methd II (preferred) Utilize phtgraphic/vide tracking and cmputatinal techniques t btain a visual representatin f the test pl areas cvered by the device under test ver ne cmplete standard cleaning cycle. If the device under test is designed t clean vertical pl surfaces, prvisins shall be made t include wall areas in the calculatin f the percentage f the pl surface area cleaned. 9 5.2.4 Acceptance Criteria A device may be rated t clean the fllwing surfaces f the pl: Flr Only Wall and Flr Wall Only During ne cmplete standard cleaning cycle, the device under test shall prvide >95% cverage f the pl surface area(s) fr which it is rated. 5.3 Hydrstatic Pressure r Vacuum Devices that are perated via circulatin r bster pump pressure r vacuum shall be subjected t a pressure r vacuum test. Systems that incrprate a pressure r vacuum regulating valve shall be exempt frm this test Pressure pwered systems Pressurize cmpnents f the device that are subject t pressure t 1.5 times the manufacturer s maximum rated pressure within a perid f secnds and maintain that pressure fr 5 minutes Vacuum pwered system Apply a vacuum t cmpnents f the device that are subject t vacuum t 1.5 times the manufacturer s maximum rated vacuum (up t a maximum f 25 Hg) within secnds and maintain that vacuum fr 5 minutes Acceptance Criteria The device shall nt sustain permanent damage r defrmatin. Leakage shall nt cnstitute a failure. 6.0 Data plate Data plate(s) shall be permanently attached and readily accessible. The data plate(s) shall have the fllwing infrmatin: Manufacturer s name and cntact infrmatin (address, phne number, website, r prime supplier); Mdel number; Serial number r date f manufacturer; electrical requirements - vlts, amps and Hertz The cntaminants that the device rated t remve (i.e. sand, small debris, and/r leaves) The surfaces that the device is rated t clean (flr nly, wall nly, wall and flr) Autmated cleaners shall include a warning regarding entrapment and entanglement (unit with a crd) risks Part number fr nbard filtratin element(s) (if applicable) Maximum rated pressure r vacuum (circulatin r bster pump pressure/vacuum pwered systems) The NSF Certificatin mark (<Relevant Standard> replaced with CCS-14xxx) This dcument is the prperty f NSF Internatinal.
