The Globwave Wave-DDS and PS-WFVS The GlobWave Diagnostic Systems NOC (Southampton, UK) provide two diagnostic services to GlobWave: Pilot Spatial Wave Forecast Verification Scheme (PS-WFVS) Wave Diagnostic Data Set (Wave DDS) No. 2

The GlobWave PS-WFVS Pilot Spatial Wave Forecast Verification Scheme Built to augment the existing JCOMM Wave Forecast Verification Scheme operated by ECMWF. No. 3

The JCOMM WFVS Routine inter-comparison of global wave model forecast verification data Established in 1995 To provide quality assurance for wave forecast model products In particular for SOLAS, ship routing and the GMDSS Continued under the auspices of ETWS Original inter-comparison Exchange of model forecast data at moored buoy sites Observations of sig. wave height, wave period and wind speed via WMO GTS Five centres involved Exchange subsequently expanded Paper discussing results from the exchange was published in 2002 No. 4

The JCOMM WFVS Thirteen centres participating ECMWF, Met Office, FNMOC, NCEP, Meterological Service of Canada, Météo-France, DWD, BOM, SHOM, JMA, Puertos del Estados, KMA Statistics produced monthly at ECMWF Bias RMS errors Correlation coefficient Scatter index Symmetric slope Each statistic produced for Significant wave height Peak period No. 5

The JCOMM WFVS Plots are produced for Statistics as a function of forecast lead time Time series of model and observation values Scatter plots of model vs observation values Verification data sets also available to allow further calculation Statistics made available on a web page for those centres involved in the exchange Contribute to on-going validation efforts A common set of observations is used Data is exchanged in an agreed common format Scatter and time-series plots No. 6

The JCOMM WFVS One common report is produced each month, over set of common locations. No. 7

The GlobWave PS-WFVS The GlobWave Pilot Spatial Wave Forecast Verification Scheme provides the following enhancements to the JCOMM service: Provides comparisons to satellite data (altimetry and SAR) over the entire globe Provides spatial inter-comparisons against satellite, model now-casts, and ensemble model fields. The system is configurable via a web interface. The system produces monthly reports operationally, but also provides a daily report to all users. All plots are configurable in time, space and variable. No. 8

The GlobWave PS-WFVS The following examples are taken from actual reports generated for the participants. Every plot has a series of links in the figure to the PS-WFVS website, for most plots users can directly the values produced by the plots. No. 9

The GlobWave PS-WFVS Example plots: No. 10

The GlobWave PS-WFVS Example plots: No. 11

The GlobWave PS-WFVS Example plots: No. 12

The GlobWave PS-WFVS Example plots: No. 13

The GlobWave PS-WFVS Example plots: No. 14

The GlobWave PS-WFVS Example plots: No. 15

The GlobWave PS-WFVS Operational reports are sent a link to their reports via . The report is produced once per month before the 15 th, with coverage of the previous month. For example, the report for September 2011 will be available before October 15 th. Daily reports are produced when system resources allow. In-fact they are produced nearly every day. No. 16
