3 University of South Alabama Department of Chemistry CH 103L-501 Chemistry and Its Role in Society Tuesday Evenings 6:30 9:00 PM Chemistry Laboratory 108 INSTRUCTOR: OFFICE : Mr. Kevin Dolbeare Off Campus kbd302@jaguar1.usouthal.edu OFFICE HOURS: Tuesday 6:00 6:30 PM By appointment TEXT: Laboratory Manual; Chemistry in Context, Applying Chemistry in Society, 4 th Ed. Stratton, Steehler, Pienta and Middlecamp ***Required*** SAFETY: Many things can and will go wrong during the course of an experiment, but you as a student must be prepared. You will receive a copy of the Chemistry Safety Rules. The safety rules will be vigorously enforced including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). Improper clothing will be grounds to bar access to the laboratory. Noncompliance will result in dismissal from the class. ATTITUDE: This is a laboratory class of discovery. I hope that will enjoy learning from the exercises and enjoy performing the experiments. Science is becoming more and more important in today s society. Understanding both scientific methods and chemical knowledge will make you better citizens and teachers. ATTENDANCE: You must attend lab to be able to perform the experiments. The lowest grade will be dropped during the final calculation of the final grade. Any missed labs will result in a zero for that lab. There is NO provision for making up missed laboratory sessions, so DO NOT MISS! STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: You will be responsible for both equipment and your safety. Carefully set up and execute all steps of the labs. Think twice, do once! Failure to check-out of the laboratory results in a penalty of $50! We will check out on April 27!

4 GOALS: To provide a setting where the students are encouraged to discover and analyze concepts presents during the chemistry lecture section. OBJECTIVES: To have the students aware of the safety concerns in the laboratory and follow all the procedures to ensure an accident free lab. To develop correct laboratory techniques in the use of volumetric glassware, scales, Bunsen burners, spectrophotometers and ph meters. To observe physical and chemical changes when various chemicals are combined. To set up and balance chemical reactions. To dispose of chemicals according to guildelines issued. To build molecular structures using a modeling kits. Please refer to the responsibility sheet and safety sheet for more details.
