1 Legacy High School A Global Studies School Course Expectations Chemistry I Honors Instructor: Mr. Matthew Totaro LHS Room 1103 Phone: (702) Ext mtotaro@interact.ccsd.net Website Address: Course Scope: This course is designed for those students who have successfully completed Algebra I and exhibit an interest in science, especially chemistry. Topics include: mathematics of chemistry, safety, laboratory procedures, elements-compounds-mixtures, atomic theory and structure, structure and organization of the periodic table, mole concept, chemical bonding, nomenclature, chemical equations, stoichiometry, kinetic molecular theory, phases of matter, solutions, acids-bases theory, equilibrium, thermochemistry, organic chemistry, nuclear chemistry, chemistry of the environment, and career opportunities. Science, Technology, and Society (STS) issues will be an integral on-going part of this course. Additional topics may include history of chemistry, biochemistry, qualitative chemistry, and research projects. This course is distinguished from Chemistry I by the instructional pacing and the delivery of advanced content. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to our society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one science credit towards high school graduation and qualifies as a laboratory science for college entrance. Course Goals: 1. To develop the basic skill of using the scientific inquiry for problem solving. [NS: N.12.A] 2. To demonstrate safe laboratory skills and procedures in using laboratory equipment. [NS: N.12.A] 3. To develop skill in using symbols, terms, equations, and units of measurement. [NS: N.12.A] 4. To demonstrate an understanding of the changes elements, compounds, and mixtures undergo. 2 resulting in repeating patterns and properties. [NS: P.12.A] 6. To demonstrate the fundamental principles of nuclear chemistry. [NS: P.12.A] 7. To write and name chemical formulas using the periodic table. [NS: P.12.A] 8. To develop an understanding of chemical bonding and properties. [NS: P.12.A] 9. To develop an understanding of chemical equations. [NS: P.12.A] 10. To develop a quantitative understanding of chemical reactions (stoichiometry). [NS: P.12.A] 11. To explain the behavior of matter in terms of kinetic molecular theory. [NS: P.12.A] 12. To demonstrate an understanding of the solution process. [NS: P.12.A] 13. To explore the behavior of acids, bases, and salts conceptually and quantitatively. [NS: P.12.A] 14. To develop a basic understanding of kinetic theory. [NS: P.12.A] 15. To develop a basic understanding of thermochemistry. [NS: P.12.A] 16. To develop basic understanding of chemical equilibrium. [NS: P.12.A] 17. To develop a basic understanding of organic chemistry emphasizing polymer formation. [NS: P.12.A] 18. To develop an awareness of the relationship of chemical principles to current societal issues and advancements including such topics as nuclear waste disposal, air, water and land pollution, energy resources, uses of nanotechnology and advancements in medicine. [NS: N.12.B] 19. To recognize the vocational opportunities in areas related to chemistry. [NS: N.12.B] 20. To develop an understanding of character, ethics, and manners as appropriate for this course. [NS: N.12.B] Textbooks The following text(s) will be utilized in this course: Zumdahl, S. S. Introductory Chemistry: A Foundation, 4 th ed., Houghton Mifflin Company, Student Supplies Students are expected to have and maintain the following supplies all year: Textbook Class Binder with loose leaf paper Scientific Calculator Writing Instruments Tardy Policy Legacy High School Page: 2
3 Tardiness is a serious disruption to the educational program. Every student is required to be in his/her seat when the tardy bell rings. With that in mind, the Legacy High School Tardy Policy will be strictly enforced. On the first and second tardy, the student will be warned; on the third tardy, the parent will be contacted; on the fourth tardy, a detention will be assigned; on the fifth and all subsequent tardies, the student will be sent to the deans office and placed on a Required Parent Conference. Students more than a half hour late will be counted as an absence. Grading Policy Grading Scale: 89.5% - 100% A 79.5% % B 69.5% % C 59.5% % D Below 59.5% F Description of Grading Procedures Tests 60% Problem Sets (Classwork and Homework) 20% Labs and Lab Write-Ups 15% Quarter Project 5% Tests will be given at the end of every chapter. Grading on a curve will be at the discretion of the instructor. At least one lab will be completed per chapter. Most labs will require a formal lab write-up. Class Notebooks Students must maintain a binder throughout the year. Students are required to maintain five tabbed sections in the binder (handouts, warm-ups, notes, problem sets, and labs). Warm-up questions will be turned in at the end of the quarter. Homework - Students should expect homework, in the form of problems, lab write-ups and readings, every night. Homework problems are to be completed the night assigned. Then the following class period, questions about the homework will be answered. Time for correction will be given and the assignment will be turned in the next period. Semester Grades: 42.5% Quarter 1/3 Grade 42.5% Quarter 2/4 Grade 15% Semester Examination Standards of Preparation: All student work will be graded with spelling, grammar, and neatness taken into account. 4 Make-up Work, Late Work, and Attendance Make-up procedures: Following an absence, students are required to check to obtain the handouts, class notes, labs, and assignments. Students are required to copy from their classmates the warm-up questions that they missed. Students are responsible for scheduling with me a time after school to make-up a test. Late Work o Late work will only be accepted one class after the assignment is due. Late work will receive a maximum of half credit for the work completed. Hours of Availability I will be available every day after school from 1:30 to 2:30 for extra help and to provide time for missed exams or anything else. Attendance After the seventh unexcused absence, students will be denied credit and will receive an F for the course. Classroom Behavior Expectations Classroom Behavioral Expectations Classroom management will follow a progressive discipline plan in which: Student will first be warned verbally. Student will then be moved to a different seat. Parent(s) or guardian(s) of the student will then be contacted. If necessary, the student will be referred to the counselor or the dean. Students are expected to adhere to all of the behavioral guidelines of CCSD and Legacy High School while in class. Students are expected to sit and work on the daily problem upon entering the classroom. The last five minutes of class is called predismissal. During pre-dismissal, students are required discuss the make-up work or other special issues with the teacher, and begin working on the homework. Corridor and restroom passes will be issued only when absolutely necessary. Students will be issued passes only when classroom business is completed. Legacy High School Page: 4
5 Food, drink, gum, candy, cell phones, and audio players are not allowed in class. It is the responsibility of each student to secure their own property while in class. Classroom citizenship will be determined as follows: O = Student participates daily, observes all CCSD and Legacy High School policies, and displays outstanding effort. S = Student participates daily, observes all CCSD and Legacy High School policies, and displays satisfactory effort. N = Student participates occasionally, observes all CCSD and Legacy High School polices, and displays effort that needs improvement. U = Student does not participate, does not observe all CCSD and Legacy High School policies, and does not put forth acceptable effort.
