Myths of the NWS PESA Talk Oct 2015 NWS Dariusz Jablonski Finder Exploration Slide 1
What is this presentation not about 1. This is not about being personal, egos, where you come from, your credentials, experience or even how much you know 2. It is not even about data as all have access to more or less same data set Slide 2
What is this presentation about? 1. This is about asking questions and acting accordingly: Don t be afraid to be ridiculous and Have lots of fun!!! 2. Once you ask questions you will come up with your own personal laundry list Slide 3
My Laundry List 1. NWS severely tilted toward the Indian Ocean 2. NWS is a very prolific hydrocarbon system 3. You can t correlate across wide distances 4. Does the Callovian unconformity exist? 5. All hydrocarbons migrate to the top porosity 6. Majority of HCs require a structure 7. Deep water is very prospective 8. Oil is dominantly sourced from the Upper Jurassic in the Dampier Sub-basin Today's PESA Talk Slide 4
Oil is dominantly sourced from the Upper Jurassic in the Dampier Sub-basin Today's PESA Talk Slide 5

Can t Correlate across Significant Distances 1. We should understand stratigraphy by now 2. But often we don t as we mix lithostratigraphy with chronostratigraphy 3. Why? Because most of us don t use the sequence stratigraphic method Slide 20

Does the Callovian Unconformity Exist? Rift Mechanism -> Better Understanding of Paleogeography Slide 28
Does the Callovian Unconformity Exist? 1. Callovian Unconformity : Callovian-Oxfordian section is controlled by mega-tectonics (inter-continental plate interactions and no age diachronism is observed) 2 tectonic events Collapse (stretch/jc transgression) followed by uplift (onset of oceanic crust formation: JO composite seq. boundary) Contrary to most break-up models that predict uplift first then subsidence Seismic and well recognition criteria (JC-no angularity; JO-angularity on basin margin, no angularity in the basin) Synrift is likely to be clst dominated and hence no sst (or limited) in grabens during tectonism Sst disposition (basin floor fans) in non-exposed areas as a result of uplift at JO 2. Stretch followed by uplift is repeated many times on the NWS (Jablonski & Saitta, 2004) 3. There is no such thing as a Callovian Unconformity JO Uplift JC Transgression D. Jablonski (1997) Slide 29
