Camden County Resource managers use updated aerial imagery to find State permit violations in land clearings. Better enforcement of conservation rules with positive impact to land and water quality. Amy Durden 3
Chatham County First responders (Fire, Sheriff, EMS) use aerial photography for incident locating. Quicker response that saves lives and property. Jeremy Poss 4
Davie County Aerial imagery provides base maps for Enhanced 911 Dispatch operations. Faster site location, pinpoint addresses, see the ground conditions in remote areas for search and rescue. John Gallimore 5
Davie County Tax Administrators use aerial imagery for property mapping. Discover new construction, monitor change, and improve accuracy of cadastral mapping for tax assessments. John Gallimore 6
Davie County Economic developers use aerial imagery to identify suitable sites for proposed developments. Time savings in site evaluation and suitability analysis, and preliminary cost analysis on site preparation. John Gallimore 7
Hyde County County created its first aerial imagery in A detailed and comprehensive base map to support local decision making. Tony Spencer 8
Hyde County Planners and emergency response teams will have improved knowledge of any area of concern. Aerial imagery can assist in emergency incident response for schools (above), and better planning for development in Swan Quarter Bay. Tony Spencer Mattamuskeet School Swanquarter Landing 9
North Carolina State University Libraries Specialists use imagery to research and determine best practices for the provision of long term access strategies. A permanent cultural record that fosters the application of temporal analysis for decision making. Steve Morris 10
Onslow County Planners use aerial imagery to track shoreline change. Changes in tax base and planning for Hazard Mitigation Patricia Pike
Onslow County Planners use aerial imagery to plan for residential and commercial growth. Managed growth while adding to tax base, locating new schools, & managing the infrastructure Patricia Pike
Pasquotank County Planning and Building Inspection offices identify structures, existing or planned, that are at risk for flooding. Better planning for evacuation and mitigation for property at risk of loss or damage. Julie Stamper 13
Pasquotank County Economic Development identifies suitable and best sites for proposed developments. Decision makers can better visualize the current on-ground situation and future possibilities. Julie Stamper 14
Pasquotank County Tax Office identifies types of Land Cover that may qualify for reduced taxes under State regulations. Less field inspection, and more accurate acreage calculations of cultivated, woods, and unusable land. Julie Stamper 15
City of Asheville Stormwater Utility Billing High-resolution orthophotography is used to maintain an impervious surface inventory that provides an equitable billing mechanism for funding NPDES Phase II Stormwater projects and initiatives. Illustration, Graphic, Map Nick Harvey 16
CGIA Phase II Stormwater Demonstration Orthophotography used with feature extraction technology to delineate impervious surfaces, per parcel. Managers save time and money vs. manual collection, and data can be easily updated. Frank Obusek 17
Shellfish Sanitation and Recreational Water Quality Section NC Div. Env. Health Changes in Land Use are easily identified using high-resolution aerial images. Better analysis of how different land use patterns affect water quality. Brad Pogue Shannon Jenkins 18
CGIA and Orange Co. Resource Managers monitor change in forest hardwoods and pine cover types. Replaces coarseresolution landcover data with more accurate delineation of forest types. Frank Obusek 19
NC General Assembly Legislative Services Office uses imagery to help resolve district boundary questions. Proper elections administration and avoidance of costly election result disputes. Dan Frey 20
CGIA and City of Charlotte Orthophotography is used to demonstrate a repeatable costeffective solution for updating impervious surfaces data. High accuracy method (94%) saves time and money vs. manual collection for stormwater management Impervious 2004 Aerial Photography 2004 Impervious using 2002 Mask 2004 Impervious Update Frank Obusek 21
CGIA and NC Ecosystem Enhancement Program Satellite Imagery Orthophotography improves the accuracy of satellite imagery and landcover data to delineate impervious surfaces in targeted watersheds. Orthophotography A better and more costeffective solution within critical watersheds. Frank Obusek 22
USDA Forest Service Southern Global Change Orthophotography helped determine factors for selecting paired watersheds for a 5-year study on the effectiveness of stream management zones in the Neuse Basin. Better selection of areas will improve research outcomes. Johnny Boggs 23
The previous slides are examples of how aerial imagery is used by various organizations in North Carolina to support daily business processes. The North Carolina Geographic Information Coordinating Council advocates for the maintenance of high resolution aerial imagery (local orthophotography) with updates to occur at least once every four years statewide. For information on the Council s direction for statewide aerial imagery, including standards and cost share opportunities, please visit Additional examples to this slide collection are always welcome, please contact zsolt.nagy@ncmail.net 24
