10 Institution Type Analysis Savings Groups, SACCOs, and Mobile Money Agents dominate the market, but their prevalence varies greatly from province to province. Savings Groups Central, Eastern, Western SACCOs Southern, Muchinga, Northern, Luapula Mobile Money Agents Lusaka, North-Western, Copperbelt 10
11 Supply and demand Nationally, Zambia has an average of 17 financial access points per 10,000 adults. While Western Province has the most Wards without access points and Lusaka Province has the fewest, they both fall near the provincial median in terms of access points per 10,000 adults. Luapula, North-Western, and Northern Provinces have the lowest supply/demand ratios. 11
12 Supply and demand: a closer look Ten most underserved districts in Zambia Not surprisingly, 8 of the 10 most underserved districts in Zambia are in Luapula, North-Western, and Northern provinces. More surprisingly, when looking at the 20 most underserved districts, 3 are within Lusaka and Copperbelt provinces: Masaita, Mufulira, and Kafue. 12

14 Western Province 100 WARDS WITH NO FINANCIAL ACCESS 500,000 people : 900 financial access points Unmet Demand In Kalabo District, 26 out of 27 Wards do not have a single financial access point. There are 22 access points for all 71,000 people; all are located within one Ward. Kalabo, Sesheke, and Mongu combined have 219 access points to serve over 230,000 people; that means less than 1 access point per 1,000 people. 14
15 Western Province Health and Fin Access (200 health points) Education and Fin Access (over 600 edu points) Ag and Fin Access (nearly 300 ag points) Clusters of education agriculture, and healthcare points without any financial access points nearby. 15
16 Copperbelt Province 84 WARDS WITHOUT FINANCIAL ACCESS Highly uneven financial access point distribution across Copperbelt Province leaves significant portions of the population financial underserved. 16
17 Copperbelt Province Mobile Money Agents Savings Groups Mobile Money Agents and Savings Groups each account for 30% of financial access points in Copperbelt. Mobile Money Agents, however, are located only in the densest areas, while Savings Groups provide financial access to populations living outside of these concentrated centers. 17
18 Copperbelt Province Education Points Agriculture Points Both education and agriculture are widely distributed across the Province, highlighting opportunity for financial service provider expansion across the area. 18
19 Data Sources Shapefile Boundaries: Central Statistics Office. Shapefiles are available at the Province, District, and Ward levels. Supply Side Data: Financial Sector Deepening Zambia (FSDZ) : All data was sourced from GPS coordinates of all financial access points collected by FSDZ. A compendium was created from an original group of 14 Excel files. The metrics available to the user are number of access points. Transportation: Infrastructure raster layers including highways, waterways, and railroads were sourced from Infrastructure Africa. Population Density: The population density contextual layer is sourced from Worldpop. Alpha version 2010 and 2015 estimates of numbers of people per grid square, with national totals adjusted to match UN population division estimates ( and remaining unadjusted. Data is as of January,
