Geography Grade 10 1 Data Handling March 2018 DATA HANDLING TASK GEOGRAPHY GRADE INSTRUCTIONS: 1. The tasks should be conducted in class under supervision 2. Have different colors (crayons) when completing this task. 3. Your task will comprise of THREE sections, namely SECTION A: DATA COLLECTION SECTION B: DATA HANDLING AND GRAPHING SKILLS SECTION C: ANALYSING AND INTERPETATION OF DATA. AIM: To investigate the relationship between temperature, humidity and rainfall at Armburgh, and any weather phenomena during the recorded period and their impact on man. DURATION: 1 1 / 2 HOURS MARKS: 75 Name of candidate School circuit

Geography Grade 10 2 Data Handling March 2018 SECTION A DATA COLLECTION A five day record (data) has been collected from the Armburg, Mpumalanga weather station. Compile a record (on the sheet provided) of all weather data from the recordings. Record the Data for each day. Use the given information to compile the record. (5) Five day weather at Armburg, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The following information was recorded from the 5 th to the 10th of February 2018 Day 1 had 0% chances of rainfall, 48% humidity, wind speed of 14km/h with temperatures of 16 0 C and 25 0 C. Day two had slight higher maximum temperature of 28 0C and a minimum of 15 0 C with 18km/h winds peed. 0,4mm of rainfall was recorded from the 10% chances. It had 48% of humidity. Day three had 14km/h wind speed, 57% humidity and recorded 0,2mm of rainfall from the 10% chances, temperatures were 16 0 C 29 0 C. Day 4 had a 60% chances of rainfall with 61% humidity, temperatures slightly higher at 17 0 C 31 0 C with wind speed of 14km/h. Recorded rainfall was 1,8mm. Day 5 s rainfall chances was at 90%, 79% humidity, 2,1 mm rainfall recorded and 10km/h winds peed. Temperatures dropped to 18 0 C 29 0 C. SECTION B DATA HANDLING You are going to construct THREE types of graphs, (as indicated below) using the data you have gathered. Please note that a key must be provided for each graph and that each axis must be clearly labeled. Each graph must have an appropriate heading.

Geography Grade 10 3 Data Handling March 2018 I) BAR GRAPH You must construct a bar graph indicating the recorded amount of rainfall per day for 5 days. Use the vertical scale 1cm = 2mm of rainfall with 1cm space between each bar and a horizontal scale of 1cm for each day. (5) Calculate the total rainfall received in the 5 day period. Show all your calculations /4/

Geography Grade 10 4 Data Handling March 2018 II) LINE GRAPH You must construct 2 line graphs on a single set of axes indicating the minimum and maximum temperature experienced over 5 days. Use the vertical scale 1cm = 2 0 C and the horizontal scale of 0,5cm for each day. To draw the graph you need to complete the following ON THE SAME SET OF AXES. Take note that all data is to appear on one set of axes. Include a colour co-ordinated key as you will have 2 graphs /7/

Geography Grade 10 5 Data Handling March 2018 Calculate the average minimum and maximum temperatures for the 5 day period. Show all your calculations Minimum Maximum /8/ SECTION C ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION 1. Analyse the line graph describe briefly what is shown in each graph. i.e. the general changes in the graphs for the 5 day period.

Geography Grade 10 6 Data Handling March 2018 /10/ 2. State the correlation between temperature, rainfall by underlining the correct word in the following paragraph As the temperature (increases/decreases), so more water (evaporates/condenses). This causes (increase/decrease)in the humidity. This water vapour then (evaporates/condenses) resulting in more clouds and an (increase/decrease) in rainfall. Therefore the relationship between the three factors is that a/an(increase/decrease) in temperature and humidity will lead to a/an (increase/decrease) in rainfall (7x2) (14) 3. Briefly describe one similarity or difference per day between the recordings. /2/ 4. Looking at the information gathered in section A, what would be the impact that this weather had or could have on: (a) Man (3x2) (6) (b) Environment (3x2) (6)

Geography Grade 10 7 Data Handling March State and explain what could be done in future to avoid or lessen the impact of the phenomena and the damage caused. (4x2) (8) TOTAL = 75
