Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher February was chosen to coincide with Frederick Douglass s and Abraham Lincoln s birthdays Became a national month-long celebration in 1976 In 1739, the Stono Rebellion in South Carolina became the largest slave revolt in colonial America The first black U.S. senator was Hiram Revels in 1870 Dr. Mae Jemison became the first African American woman to go into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavor in 1992 Thurgood Marshall was the first African American appointed to the United States Supreme Court Jack Johnson was the first African-American man to hold the World Heavyweight Champion boxing title in Jazz, an African American musical form born out of the blues, ragtime and marching bands, originated in Louisiana during the turn of the 19th century At a time when universities did not typically offer financial assistance to black athletes, African-American football star Ernie Davis was offered more than 50 scholarships. Hall-of-Famer Jackie Robinson helped establish the African American-owned and - controlled Freedom Bank John Baxter Taylor was the first African American to win an Olympic gold medal Alexa Canady became the first female African-American neurosurgeon in the United States. Cathay Williams was the first and only known female Buffalo Soldier during the Civil War Quincy Jones is the most Grammy-nominated artist in the history of the awards with 76 nominations and 26 awards. Scientist and mathematician Benjamin Banneker is credited with helping to design the blueprints for Washington, D.C. George Monroe and William Robinson are thought to be two of the first African Americans to work as Pony Express riders Inventor of the three-way traffic signal, Garrett Morgan, became the first African American to own a car in Cleveland, Ohio Satchel Paige was the first African-American pitcher to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame Page 5

6 President s Day and Voter Registration By: Journalism Team How to Register to vote? Any Florida resident who is eligible to vote or is already registered to vote in Florida may use the OVR form to submit an application, update an existing registration, or prefill an application form to print and deliver to the Supervisor of Elections office. Users will need a Florida driver license or state identification (ID) card and the last four digits of their social security number to complete and submit the voter registration application electronically. Once an individual s identity is verified and the application is deemed complete, a voter information card will be issued by a Supervisor of Elections office. (Online Voter Registration has multiple safeguards in place to verify and protect a person s identity and personal information)

7 PTO ART STORE By: Journalism Team The PTO Art Committee has been busy trying to get the store set up! They have greeting cards, wreaths, pillows and so much more. All the items in the store were made by participants at PTO. There will be new items added all the time. Also, if there is ever anything you would want to have that you do not see you should let the Art Committee class know! We hope you are as excited about this as we are!!! Page 7

8 By: Hope SPECIAL EVENT Edison Festival of Lights Grand Parade Date: Feb 16, 2019 Time: 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Where: The Grand Parade travels north on US41 and winds through the streets in Downtown Fort Myers. Named as the largest night parade in the Southeast year after year, the Grand Parade is a two-hour extravaganza featuring national participants & local marching bands, floats, local government and law enforcement officials, clowns and much, much more. The parade brings the entire Southwest Florida community out in celebration of the life and achievements of our local winter resident, Thomas Edison. Spectators come from near and far to enjoy this event and often begin marking their viewing spot weeks in advance. Page 8
