Title: A Fresh Look at Cassiopeia A in 3D Teaching Experience 2013 Guest lecturer for Astro 120 at Harvard University. I developed and presented a narrative describing the life cycle of a Type Ia supernova from the nascent progenitor system through to explosion and evolution into a remnant for a review class Teaching Assistant at Dartmouth College. I acted as substitute lecturer, contributed lesson material, conducted labs, led review classes, and graded for the following course topics: General Physics, Introductory Astronomy, Stars and the Milky Way, Exploration of the Solar System, and the Development of Astronomical Thought Science instructor at Westshire Elementary School. I developed and conducted inquiry-based lessons in astronomy for fourth grade students in Fairlee, Vermont as part of an NSF-funded program for training professionals in science education Teaching Assistant at McMaster University. I led tutorial classes, graded, acted as substitute lecturer, and contributed content for the following course topics: First-year calculus for scientists and engineers, first-year calculus for arts students, and third-year comparative literature. Mentoring Experience Over the past five years I have personally supervised or helped to supervise over 10 undergraduate and graduate students from Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Yale University, and MIT. Students have been incorporated into projects that I helped develop, and most went on to present results at conferences and contribute towards published papers. I have trained students in the techniques of optical and near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy on the 6.5m MMT and Magellan telescopes, as well as the 2.4m Hiltner and 1.3m McGraw-Hill telescopes at MDM Observatory. Service Experience 2012 present Referee for the Astrophysical Journal and Letters Representative on school councils at Dartmouth College, the London School of Economics, and McMaster University Ethics training facilitator for incoming Dartmouth College graduate students. Topics covered include the responsibilities of mentors and mentees, discrimination, copyright rules, and fostering healthy workplace atmosphere.
6 Dan Milisavljevic Contributing editor for Incite Magazine, a campus publication managed by students Volunteer tutor in subjects related to physics, mathematics, and literature. Community Outreach 2013 Participant in the Visiting Scientist Day for the 6th graders of O Maley Middle School in Gloucester, MA. The event brings toegether local scientists/engineers of various cultural backgrounds to inform students about the many options they have for careers in science and to dispel some of the myths about who scientists are and what they do Participant in the Telling Your Story Workshop held at MIT. Goals included reviewing effective teaching techniques and establishing connections between Boston-area K-12 educators and science professionals to enable students to have interactive lessons presented by professionals active in research Volunteer developer and presenter of Dartmouth College s Science Café initiative that encouraged graduate students to host informal discussions centered on science at local schools Volunteer developer and presenter of Dartmouth College s Stellar Forensics exhibit showcased at the USA Science and Engineering Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. October Volunteer activity leader at Montshire Museum in Vermont. I participated in special exhibitions, gave presentations about my research, and led activities throught the year Volunteer public observer at Dartmouth College where I provided daytime tours of the historical Shattuck Observatory to college students, local interest groups and elementary schools (approximately once a week). I also organized nighttime observing sessions involving the university s modern 8-12 inch telescopes.
