1 Name: Date: Class: Social Studies NTI Day 8 The League of Nations It was Wilson's hope that the final treaty, drafted by the victors, would be even-handed, but the passion and material sacrifice of more than four years of war caused the European Allies to make severe demands. Persuaded that his greatest hope for peace, a League of Nations, would never be realized unless he made concessions, Wilson compromised somewhat on the issues of selfdetermination, open diplomacy, and other specifics. He successfully resisted French demands for the entire Rhineland, and somewhat moderated that country's insistence upon charging Germany the whole cost of the war. The final agreement (the Treaty of Versailles), however, provided for French occupation of the coal and iron rich Saar Basin, and a very heavy burden of reparations upon Germany. In the end, there was little left of Wilson's proposals for a generous and lasting peace but the League of Nations itself, which he had made an integral part of the treaty. Displaying poor judgment, however, the president had failed to involve leading Republicans in the treaty negotiations. Returning with a partisan document, he then refused to make concessions necessary to satisfy Republican concerns about protecting American sovereignty. With the treaty stalled in a Senate committee, Wilson began a national tour to appeal for support. On September 25, 1919, physically ravaged by the rigors of peacemaking and the pressures of the wartime presidency, he suffered a crippling stroke. Critically ill for weeks, he never fully recovered. In two separate votes November 1919 and March 1920 the Senate once again rejected the Versailles Treaty and with it the League of Nations. The League of Nations would never be capable of maintaining world order. Wilson's defeat showed that the American people were not yet ready to play a commanding role in world affairs. His utopian vision had briefly inspired the nation, but its collision with reality quickly led to widespread disillusion with world affairs. America reverted to its instinctive isolationism.

Mom teaches son valuable life lesson: "Household work isn't just for women" By Jennifer Earl CBS News October 17, 2016 Whenever Nikkole Paulun is out with her group of girl friends she hears the same complaint: What s wrong with guys nowadays? They don t do this...they don t do that. The 23-year-old mother of two from Monroe, Michigan wanted to make sure that her 6-year-old son, Lyle, wouldn t turn into just another one of the guys. So, she started teaching him early on that household work isn t just for women. My son will never be too manly to cook or do chores, Paulun explained in a Facebook post that has now gone viral with more than 56,000 shares. He will be the kind of man who can come inside from changing a tire to check on his pot roast. Who can properly sort his laundry and mow the lawn too. Lyle started helping out around the house when he was 4 years old. Not just because he was told to do so, but because he enjoyed it, too. Now, at 6 years old -- soon to be 7 -- Lyle gets a small allowance for everything extra that he does. The only required chore that he has to complete every day is clean his room and make his bed. He doesn t argue with me, Paulun told CBS News. He knows, I have to do this, and he does it. In fact, most of the time he enjoys taking the time to organize his toys. The mom hopes other parents who read her viral post will realize that it s never too early to start teaching your kids valuable life lessons. The earlier, the better in my opinion, Paulun says. People seemed to agree with Paulun, some parents even shared pictures of their own children on the mom s Facebook post. Hats off to you! And hope more and more parents take this approach, one woman commented. I 100% agree with everything you just said! Way to raise a little gentlemen. One day his wife will thank you! another wrote. Paulun is happy that her post, which received thousands of comments, seemed to resonate with the majority of parents. Teaching my son how to do these things and be a productive member of society both outside the home and inside, starts with ME, Paulun said. Discussion Questions: 1. Define: resonate, productive "Nikkole Paulun...wanted to make sure that her 6-year-old son, Lyle, wouldn t turn into just another one of the guys.

3 2. What does the reporter mean by the guys? What view of men, if any, does this suggest? 3. What does it mean to be a productive member of society? Is work someone does in the home primarily a contribution to society? Why do you think Nikkole Paulun looks at it this way? 4. Is Paulun doing anything unusual in requiring her son to do chores around the house? Explain. 5. Why has she gotten such attention by posting a video of her son doing chores? 6. Is making a boy do chores, by itself, a political action? Does her Facebook post and video give her son s chores social and political significance? Explain. 7. What is a gentleman? How has that word meant different things to different people and at different times? Why do you think this is? 8. One day his wife will thank you. How can parents raise their kids to be good future husbands or wives?

5 Name Science NTI DAY 8 Scientists think huge planet changes the way others circle the sun Scientists have never seen "Planet Nine." Some think this mystery planet really exists. They do not know for sure, though. Now, one team of scientists has found another sign that Planet Nine is out there. Scientists say the planet is on the edge of the solar system. It is an enormous planet. They think it weighs five to 10 times as much as Earth. Planet Nine is so big, it could be affecting the rest of the solar system. Scientists say it makes the solar system wobble. Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown teach at the California Institute of Technology. They found the first signs of Planet Nine earlier this year. They worked with another scientist, Elizabeth Bailey, on a new study. It explains how Planet Nine might make the solar system wobble and tilt. Planet Nine Has Strong Gravity Bailey led the study. She said the wobble is caused partly because Planet Nine is so big. It has incredibly strong gravity. Gravity is a force that pulls things together. Scientists can't see Planet Nine. Instead, they look for clues in other places. They look for ways it could be affecting the solar system. For example, sometimes there are strange movements in our solar system. Planets don't move how they are expected to. These strange events could be caused by the gravity of a huge planet. Scientists used the same thinking many years ago. It led them to discover the planet Neptune. The newest evidence for Planet Nine has to do with how the other planets circle the sun. They all move around the sun on the same level. It's like they're all skating on the same flat ice rink. The sun is at the center. Compared to the sun, the rink has a tilt. It doesn't sit flat around the middle of the sun. Sun and Planets Not On The Same Level The tilt does not make sense to scientists. Based on how the solar system formed, the sun and planets should be on the same level. This is a big mystery. Planet Nine might explain the tilt. It has a strange orbit. It is extremely large, and it is far from the sun. The scientists think these three things throw the rest of the solar system off balance. That doesn't make it easier to find Planet Nine, though. That is the next important step for scientists. This won't be easy. The planet's orbit is very big. It orbits very far from Earth. The scientists are using strong telescopes to find it. Still, it could take a very long time to see Planet Nine. Quiz 1. What is the MAIN reason why scientists believe Planet Nine exists? (A) Neptune is no longer orbiting the sun. (B) The sun is making strange wobbling movements. (C) Planets are experiencing more gravity than usual. (D) Planets are circling the sun on a tilt instead of being flat. 2. Based on the section "Planet Nine Has Strong Gravity," which of the following statements is TRUE? (A) Scientists have finally seen Planet Nine on the edge of the solar system. (B) Strange movements in the solar system led scientists to find Neptune. (C) Planet Nine does not have as much gravity as the other planets, so it wobbles. (D) Planet Nine has a lot of gravity, so it is causing the sun to tilt. 3. Read the sentence from the section "Planet Nine Has Strong Gravity." They look for ways it could be affecting the solar system. Which word could replace "affecting" WITHOUT changing its meaning? (A) tilting (C) influencing (B) orbiting (D) discovering 4. Read the sentence from the introduction [paragraphs 1-4]. Scientists say the planet is on the edge of the solar system. Fill in the blank. The "solar system" is... (A) the planets that orbit around the sun. (B) the amount of gravity planets have. (C) the flat path the planets travel on around the sun. (D) the mystery planet that is far away from the other planets.
