At the onset I would like to thank the last year s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year. Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement. I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students. It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead. The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. ABHIJIT SENGUPTA MR.DIPANJAN MANDAL MS.MOUMITA CHOWDHURY HISTORICAL ARTICLE Edmund Halley The field of astronomy is filled with many notable names and one of them is Edmund Halley. Halley was an Englishman who was a geophysicist, mathematician, astronomer, and meteorologist. He was the second Astronomer Royal in Great Britain after John Flamsteed and is best known for having computed the orbit of the famous Halley s Comet (named after him). He was a man of many accomplishments, designed several inventions and was an intrepid discoverer. Early Life: Edmund Halley was born in England on November 8, He was the son of Edmond Halley Sr. who was a very successful soapmaker in London. His family was originally from Derbyshire. As a young child, Edmund was interested in math and began his education at St Paul s School, London. In 1673, he enrolled at Oxford Queen s College. During his undergraduate years he spent a great deal of his time publishing papers on sunspots and the Solar System. Contributions and Achievements: In 1675, Halley became the assistant for John Flamsteed who was first Astronomer Royal at Greenwich Observatory. One of Halley s many tasks was to assign numbers to stars using Flamsteed s 3

4 number system for identification and cataloguing purposes. A year later, he travelled to the volcanic tropical island Saint Helena, in the South Atlantic Ocean. He brought with him a large sextant and some telescopic sights so he could set up an observatory and study and catalogue the stars in the Southern Hemisphere. It was during his stay in St. Helena that he carefully observed the transit of Mercury across the sky. He realized that Venus, moving in the same way, could then be used to calculate the size of the Solar System. Halley returned to England in 1678 and a year later he went to Danzig at the request of the Royal Society to help resolve a dispute between Robert Hooke and Johannes Hevelius. As Hevelius did not utilize a telescope in his observations, Robert Hooke questioned his findings. Halley stayed with Hevelius to observe his findings and verify his conclusions. That same year in 1679, Halley published Cataogue Stellarum Australium, a catalogue of the Southern Hemisphere stars which he observed while in St. Helena. His publication was so extensive that it included 341 stars that could be viewed only in the Southern Hemisphere. Flamsteed gave him the title The Southern Tycho in reference to the well-known sixteenth century astronomer,tycho Brahe. Halley also attained his Master s Degree from Oxford and was elected as a Royal Society Fellow aged 22. He married Mary Tooke in 1682 and they had three children together. In 1686, Halley s second work was published; a paper with charts on monsoons and trade winds also derived from his Helenian expedition. He concluded that solar heating was behind 4

5 atmospheric motions and he established that there was a close relationship between sea level height and barometric pressure. His useful charts helped define the emerging field of information visualization. Halley conducted many lunar observations which took up most of his time. Aside from his lunar studies, he also became interested with problems relating to gravity. One issue in particular that concerned him was finding a proof for the laws of planetary motion. In 1684, he travelled to Cambridge to talk the issue over with Sir Isaac Newton, only to find out that Newton had already managed to solve the problem, stating that the planets orbits would be elliptical. Halley naturally wanted to see the calculations Newton used but Newton wasn t able to locate them. Newton then wrote a short treatise entitled On the Motion of Bodies in an Orbit in 1684 which explained his calculations. This work was later expanded on by Newton, becoming the famous work Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica in 1687 which Halley helped to publish Halley s first orbit calculations were of the Kirch Comet making use of John Flamsteed s observations in 1680 and The comet had first been discovered by Göttfried Kirch on 14 November Halley calculated the orbit of the Kirch Comet in 1682 however his calculations weren t completely accurate. In 1691, Edmund Halley invented a diving bell which he and his colleagues tested extensively. It used leather tubes and lead-lined barrels to supply fresh air underwater. Halley was known as one of the earliest cases for middle ear trauma since he would stay underwater for periods that lasted up to 4 hours. The same year that he designed an early working model of a magnetic compass. 5

6 In 1693, he published an article on life annuities, including a report on age at death, heralding the beginning of actuarial science. Later Life and Comet Predictions In 1698, he was given permission to take command of the sailing ship Paramourand travel to the South Atlantic Ocean to find out more about the laws that govern the variation of the compass. The first expedition was cut short due to unrest among the crew and a second expedition began in His magnetic charts of Atlantic Ocean and parts of the Pacific Ocean were published in General Chart of the Variation of the Compass in In 1704, Halley finally became Savilian Professor of Geometry at the University of Oxford, after missing out on this prestigious appointment earlier in his career. He published Synopsis Astronomia Cometicae (A Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets) in This work detailed the parabolic orbits of 24 comets that had been observed from 1337 to It also stated that the comet sightings of 1531, 1607, and 1682 were of the same comet, which orbits the sun every years and he correctly predicted it would return in When the comet did return it became known as Halley s Comet. He devised a method of observing the transit of Venus across the sun which would next be observed in 1761 and These observations would then be used to make an accurate calculation of the distance from the Earth from the sun. Halley became Astronomer Royal at Greenwich Observatory, succeeding John Flamsteed in

7 His death He died on January 14, 1742 aged 86 and sadly, did not live to see the return of the comet that was named in his honor. Halley s Comet will next appear in the night sky in the year NEWS UPDATE Twin study finds genetics affects where children look, shaping mental development:(9 th November, 2017) A study that tracked the eye movement of twins has found that genetics plays a strong role in how people attend to their environment. Finger and toe fossils belonged to tiny primates 45 million years ago:(9 th November, 2017) A new study identifies nearly 500 minuscule finger and toe bones as belonging to 45-million-year-old tiny primates. Many of the fossils are so small they rival the diminutive size of a mustard seed. Representing nine different taxonomic families of primates and as many as 25 species, the specimens from China include numerous fossils attributed to Eosimias, the very first anthropoid known to date, and three fossils attributed to a new and more advanced anthropoid. 7

8 A giant, prehistoric otter's surprisingly powerful bite:( 9 th November, 2017) A massive, wolf-sized otter that lived about 6 million years ago may have been a dominant predator in its time, according to a new analysis of the animal's jaws. When scientists used computers to simulate how biting would strain S. melilutra's jaws, they concluded that the animal had much firmer jaw bones than expected, giving it a surprisingly strong bite. Traditional Amazonian drug linked to improved sense of wellbeing, study suggests:( 9 th November, 2017) A psychedelic drug traditionally used in South America improves people's general sense of wellbeing and may offer a treatment for alcoholism and depression, new research suggests. New DNA antenatal screening for Down's syndrome shown to be a 'transformational advance':(8 th November, 2017) Medical scientists have demonstrated for the first time that it is possible to incorporate DNA analysis into antenatal screening for three serious chromosome disorders, including Down's syndrome, in a way that is far more accurate than existing methods, and safer and less stressful for mothers. 8

9 Study reveals how a very low calorie diet can reverse type 2 diabetes:(9 th November, 2017) A research team has uncovered how a very low calorie diet can rapidly reverse type 2 diabetes in animal models. If confirmed in people, the insight provides potential new drug targets for treating this common chronic disease, said the researchers. LEDs light the way for better drug therapies:( 9 th November, 2017) A revolutionary new technique to create radioactive molecules has the potential to bring new medicines to patients much faster than before -- using light. While the previous approach took months, the new photocatalytic process replaces hydrogen with tritium in just hours. Fruit fly brains inform search engines of the future:(9 th November, 2017) The way fruit flies identify similarities between odors offers a new approach for search algorithms. Ice sheets as large as Greenland's melted fast in a warming climate:( 9 th November, 2017) New research shows that climate warming reduced the mass of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet by half in as little as 500 years, indicating the Greenland Ice Sheet could have a similar fate. 9

10 For detail mail to editor KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE SAFETY OF ANDROGENS IN WOMEN The various studies that have investigated the administration of androgens in women have found that androgen replacement therapy is well tolerated and devoid of serious side effects. All may result in unwanted mild androgenic effects, such as acne and hirsutism, if supraphysiologic T (testosterone) concentrations are reached, but are rarely associated with more serious virilization. Acne has been found in 3% 8% of patients with oral preparations of EE(endogenous estrogen) plus MT (male testosterone) compared to 0% 7% in women receiving EE alone. An increase in acne was not found with IM or SC E2 plus T in comparison to the estrogen only control, or with transdermal T vs. Placebo.The reported hirsutism rates with oral EE plus MT varied from 4.2% to 6%, which is not significantly different from patients receiving EE alone. Of interest, in a group of 100 women who had no facial hair at baseline, 14% developed facial hair with mg of EE plus 1.25 mg of MT and 22% developed facial hair with 1.25 mg of EE plus 2.5 mg of MT at 12 months, most of which was reported as light or medium growth. In comparison, both the highdose and low-dose 10

11 estrogen-only control groups had a 20% increase in facial hair growth. The hirsutism rates for IM or SC T administration, which results in supraphysiologic T levels, have been reported to vary between 0% and 20%, but has not been systematically compared to parental or SC estrogen-only therapy. No difference in hirsutism incidence rates between transdermal placebo or T have been reported.due to the first pass effect on the liver after absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, oral androgen preparations generally exhibit a greater degree of lowering of SHBG and, therefore, greater increase in the free androgen levels than do parental or transdermal androgens. This liver effect also leads to a reduction of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels, which is usually not found with androgens given in replacement doses by a nonoral route. Fortunately, many of the adverse reactions listed in the product labels of the various androgen preparations and in the literature concerning androgen therapy for male hypogonadism, such as hepatic dysfunction, polycythemia, sleep apnea, and breast stimulation have not been found in women receiving replacement therapy. 12 DISEASE RELATED BREAKING NEWS Legionnaires disease outbreak grows linked to Lisbon hospital:( 10 th November, 2017) In a follow-up on the Legionnaires disease outbreak at the São Francisco Xavier Hospital in Lisbon, the General Directorate of Health (DGS) is now reporting the number of people affected by the Legionella outbreak is up to 41 people as of Thursday. Two fatalities have been reported to date and five people are still being treated in intensive care. Seven out of 10 people affected by the outbreak (29) are over the age of 70. Portuguese Health Minister, Adalberto Campos Fernandes said the source of the infection is the Lisbon hospital itself. Portugal has seen the third largest outbreak of Legionnaires disease back in November 2014 in the town of Vila Franca de Xira, about 35 kilometers north of Lisbon, which infected 403 and killed 14. A 2001 outbreak in Spain, which affected 450 is considered the largest. 13 DRUGS UPDATES FDA Approves Auryxia (ferric Citrate) Tablets as a Treatment for People with Iron Deficiency Anemia and Chronic Kidney Disease, Not on Dialysis:(7 th November, 2017) Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:KERX), a company focused on bringing innovative medicines to people with kidney disease, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Auryxia for an additional indication. The approval is for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD), not on dialysis. Auryxia was originally approved in September 2014 for the control of serum phosphorus levels in people with chronic kidney disease who require dialysis. ARCHIVE ACHIEVEMENT: Congratulations to Anurag Chanda, student of B.Pharm final year who have got the 1st prize in poster presentation event in Prakriti 2015 at Department of Agricultural and Food engineering, IIT, Kharagpur. Mukherjee, School of Natural Products, JU on the skill to write a good manuscript for publication in impact journals. It was followed by nearly two hour long discussion among more than thirty participants on different aspects of pharmacy education. Five nonmember participants applied for membership on that very day.
