1 Report from CMA 16th GSICS Executive Panel, Boulder, May 215 Peng Zhang CMA/NSMC
2 CMA Agency update in 214 Overall satellite planning FY-3C commissioning finished in March, 214 and operational running in June, 214. Its data quality and accuracy is largely better than FY-3A/3B. FY-2G was launched on December 31, 214. The commissioning on orbit almost finished. The straylight restriction is better than the previous and its IR calibration is also better and more stable. The second generation geostationary satellite FY-4A will be launched in the late 216. The forth satellite of FY-3 (FY-3D) is planned to launch at the end of 216 or the early 217. FY-3B orbit adjustment for preventing its orbit shift is done in May, 215. FY-3C/MWTS scanning problem appeared in Feb, 215 and is being fixed currently Other major events affecting the agency or its participation in GSICS Satellite Requirement and instrument specification of the third batch of FY-3 serial satellites including 4 satellites (EM, AM, PM and Rainfall ) is determined and Early morning satellite will be launched in 218 or later. FY-2 GEO-LEO and FY-3C LEO-LEO demo product ATBDs are done for review FY-3C/MERSI and FY-2 Lunar calibration initiation and lunar ground-based measurement are planned to be conducted in 215. DCC operational algorithm began to be developed for FY-3/MERSI and FY-2 VIS/NIR. DCC monitoring found out a large inconsistency in visible reflectance between FY-2D, FY-2E, FY- 2F FY-3C/MERSI Non-linear correction using GSICS is being developed and combined method will be used to its operational calibration Comments, feedback Great appreciation to EUMETSAT for their providing IASI and GOME-2 for CMA GSICS product generation, which reduced time delay and operational instability. Encourage the owners of other reference instruments to consider this kind of provision to other GPRCs and deepen the collaboration within GSICS community. 9 CMA Lunar calibration project was funded CMA Team acquired a project funding from Chinese MOST (Ministry of Science and Technlogy) "Solar bands calibration technique based on Lunar radiance source (215~217). The main research points of this project include: moon prediction and geolocation, lunar radiance/irradiance model development, ground-based measurement and model validation and calibration algorithm development for satellite sensor. Collaboration partners: National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), CAS Nanjing University Jilin University

12 Non-linear correction Using GSICS FY-3C/MERSI Integrated/Synergic Calibration Combined Method Temporal variation of daily intercalibration slope Red line: New calibration Blue line: Prelaunch SRBC Yellow *: SNO sample based on GOME-2 Purple *: Statistical measurements over Deep Convective Clouds (DCC) (Chen et al., Remote Sens. 213) The new calibrations : consistent with SNO samples based on MODIS and GOME-2. lower over high reflectance comparing with linear results, and nearly go through DCC samples, and the reflectance difference less than 1%. Segmentation fitting is preferable for getting more appropriate calibration over the whole dynamic.

14 User Requirements and Feedback about GSICS deliverables Satellite data users (internal or external) Application: GSICS GEO-LEO and LEO-LEO bias monitoring tools are primary way to evaluate the calibration accuracy of FY-2/FY-3 instruments in the commissioning phase and operational runnning phase. Application: Evaluation of operational calibration and improvement of onboard calibration system ( such as FY-3C/VIRR IR calibration). The nonlinear calibation on orbit was resolved using the GSICS combined method GSICS results can also help the improvement of L2 products accuracy such as AMW, SST, AOT As a satellite operator Needs for tools, services, datasets Suggestion for L1 Data sharing of reference sensors used for GSICS products generation (SNOs, DCC and PICSs dataset) CMA can provide these kinds of subsets of MERSI to other GPRC GSICS-EP-16, Boulder, May 215

17 Suggestion of GSICS L1 sharing between GPRC servers Reduce the time delay of GSICS operational processing based on L1 public website order procedure (2~3 days 1day) between different agencies and also reduce data volume transfer(by crop) Keep operation stability of GEO-LEO and LEO-LEO GSICS processing in all GPRCs, especially NRTC products. Three THREDDS severs in CMA, EUMETSAT and NOAA were set up and provide the opportunity to share more data for GSICS operation, especially these data of their own reference instruments and target sensors for other GPRCs. Push GEO-GEO comparison such as FY-2-MTSAT/Himawari, FY-2-MSG, MSG-GOES for long term VIS/NIR Inter-calibration and reference transfer based on global PICS sites (desert, snow and barren ocean) Support other GSICS researches such as SBAF, site BRDF model
